Well, I cancelled WoW

Recommended Posts

So today I cancelled my World of Warcraft account. For me, the game has reached the point where it just feels like I'm grinding my way from level to level (currently at 31) by killing endless tigers and dinosaurs and whatever.

Partly it's because the two friends who were playing on my server both left. One switched to Guild Wars and the other switched to another server to play with a friend of hers who I frankly cannot stand, so that left me playing by myself, which only adds to the boredom. Perhaps I'll switch to guild wars, where at least if I only play it every other week I'm not flushing money away. Or maybe I'll go back to Renegade, which I already own :)

Anyway... just thought you all should know that I am no longer among the WoW-enabled. At least, as of the 26th.

I quit a week ago as well, I think I can still play for a few days, but I won't...

I just don't like neverending games, or at least ones that I have to pay a monthly fee for...

I have way too many unfinished games to waste time playing a game with no ending or anything to tell me to stop playing, like running out of lives or similar...

I bought WoW just to review it, and quit before my free month ran out. Seeing hundreds of other people doing the exact same things I was doing and accomplishing absolutely nothing just made me feel really bad about my life. At least with a single-player game you don't actively feel like a tiny speck in a huge crowd of losers... you are THE loser! :woohoo:

It wasn't so much that for me. I think MMOs are supposed to be more a social experience than anything, and playing them alone just kind of sucks.

And for me, I'm just not very comfortable socialising in that game anyway. I just wanted to play alone most of the time, but found it frustrating that that left me excluded from the instance dungeons, which kind of make up for half of the game experience.

As a game, WoW is pretty solid. But I just think the genre is inherently flawed and trying to destroy itself.

I kind of like the feeling of playing just an average guy in the middle of a bunch of other guys. It's the exact opposite of most games. I know that sounds odd, but I'm just really sick of every game trying to make you feel like some enormous hero. WoW probably intends to make you feel like an enormous hero but when there are that many other people around it's just impossible and I kind of like it.

I think that's one of the things I loved about Planetside. It was the faction that was winning or losing and not just you.

I could see that with Planetside. I picture being one soldier in a larger war as more engaging than being one guy 'looking out for number one' in WoW, even if it is with your group of friends. I mean, I signed on with a clan when I started, and my friends played... there was just something about it that didn't sit well with me, I guess.
