  1. I Had A Random Thought...

I would call Playboy porn, but on a relative scale it's pretty softcore by today's standards. Random aside to that: one of the playmates of the month graduated from my high school. There was a minor kerfuffle at the time because they wanted to do a shoot where she wore (or rather didn't wear as the case may be) her old cheerleading uniform. By that time it of course would have been too small, which was probably the point, and the school board didn't like the idea so a generic uniform was used instead. She also came by and visited the school that year. I was a teacher's aide running an unrelated errand and ended up being the first person to greet her as she came in.
  2. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Kirby Super Star is my personal favorite Kirby game, although I haven't played any Kirby game since Amazing Mirror. I like Super Punch-Out but it can be pretty frustrating if you don't want to look at guides or anything. I have a personal fondness for Legend of the Mystical Ninja because I spent a lot of time playing that as a kid, but it's definitely not for everyone. Even after all these years I still lack the full context for that game.

It probably would be easier to pirate it, but I'm not the kind of person who pirates games or would want to request a refund for a short indie game I could finish in under 2 hours, so I have no insights into either mentality. Also when I say I could request a refund, that doesn't mean I didn't like it. I enjoyed it, it just happens to fall into that space of "a game you can beat and get a refund for on Steam".
  4. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

I kind of agree as well. The reason for me is I think the nemesis system has promise, but they don't really go far enough with it. Branding random orcs or even a chief never really felt like it had all that significant of an impact to me apart from a very short set of circumstances. It's a good start and there's definitely potential but it seemed like Mordor stops short of being really interesting. Also in the months leading up to Mordor's release I got very proficient at the Arkham-series style combat so Mordor combat was a breeze for me.

I pushed all the buttons in Please, Don't Touch Anything. I grabbed it during the last Steam sale and unlocked all the endings. It's got an 'escape the room' type puzzle aspect. The interface made me think of Papers, Please with the way that there's lot of things to interact with that get unlocked as you progress. It's pretty short, I managed to get through it in under 2 hours. If I were a real jackass I could request a refund. It's games like this that fall under the 2 hour mark that make me worried about Steam's policy, although if you just wanted to see everything I'm sure a video of it exists somewhere.

  9. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

Super is undoubtedly a product of its time (and in several ways ahead of its time). If it's your first time playing, you WILL get lost on occasion. That can be both good and bad. In a few ways I feel like Zero Mission held your hand a little too much, to the point that it literally places a marker on your map telling you where to go and puts icons on the map telling you what rooms had items in them. While its still open in the way that Metroid is, having the game direct you like that does take away some of the fun of discovery. One of the things I really loved about Super was getting a new item, then going back and finding all the new places I could explore without any sort of guidance. I can understand that being frustrating as well, and at times it probably was for me. I'm going to be an old man for a second and say that playing Super without the ability to quickly look something up led to some really satisfying moments for me. If I were to play it now for the first time, I'd probably end up googling too because who has that kind of time these days. But there's definitely something to be said for the pure experience.
  10. Idle Thumbs 216: Super Hypercast

For the record, Spelunky doesn't track things like consecutive days played. In a way I kind of wish it did, mostly because I'm curious to know how long I've been doing it.
  11. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

I agree with that. The atmosphere is what I really love about Super. It's full of great little details like the two heads that turn to face you in the elevator or the spotlight that turns on after you get the morph ball. But Zero Mission controls better without a doubt. I would love a remake version of Super that kept that environment and just put in Zero Mission's enhanced movement.
  12. E3 2015

At the time of the article's publishing, UK was the only ones they had numbers for. It said they asked for global and NA numbers as well but didn't have them yet.
  13. E3 2015

Amazon is a weird metric to draw conclusions from, but it's about as close to measuring dollars as you can get at this point. Supposedly they took positive and negative mentions into account when they made that chart, but how they sorted through millions of tweet I have no idea. Overall it's all meaningless anyway. The only good it does is to drive fanboys and fangirls even further into their respective domains. Who cares who won? If I see one thing that makes me happy I call that a win for me.
  14. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

Zero Mission is like a more refined version of Super. It took the things that were great about Super and smoothed out some of the rough edges like the movement. I still personally prefer Super because of the little details and nostalgia, but I can't argue against Zero Mission being a superior game.
  15. Batmazement: Knightly Man Bruce

I don't know exactly how much work is involved in porting a game but I've seen it brought up before that apparently the Iron Galaxy team that worked on it consisted of only 12 people, which I guess is small for a game of this size? I really don't know.
  16. E3 2015

The article I linked to doesn't talk about the confs at all. The metric used was preorders at Amazon. Except for two (FFVII and Horizon: Zero Dawn) the top 10 were Xbox related. The social media metric was based on this chart, which was based on Twitter mentions.
  17. E3 2015

According to Amazon UK and social media, Xbox won E3
  18. Batmazement: Knightly Man Bruce

I'm not really sure. The blog post says I am somewhat amused by WB's recommendations for getting the game to work better. It pretty much amounts to "go to the settings and turn everything off, use an SSD".
  19. Batmazement: Knightly Man Bruce

I think the stealth sections in the Arkham games can be interesting because they give you a lot of ways to handle the situation. Unfortunately they do a very poor job of encouraging you to do anything other than sneak up behind a guy and slowly choke him out. I've played City a LOT and I'd often try to use the various methods available to me for taking henchmen down, but the easiest method by far to simply sneak up on them one at a time. I'm hoping that the PC issues will be fixed by the time I can actually play the game. I preordered it from GMG, who is offering a refund of the game if the issues aren't fixed by the next few patches.
  20. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

I hope no one's idling without at least trying the game. I'll admit I've let some games idle to get the cards but in every case I at least played enough to know that I didn't enjoy it and resorted to idling for the drops. In a couple cases they were games that had cards added after I had finished playing them, but once or twice it actually got me to play the game again.

Odious Tea is by far my favorite Halo game. The individual character segments aren't the best (although by most Halo standards I still think they're fine) but my god did I love wandering around that city. I'm a huge fan of subtle environmental cues and storytelling and my favorite moments of ODST are when the city itself actively tries to guide you along with signs or barriers. I absolutely loved that and wish it was more common in games. As far as the rest of the series goes, I'll pretty much echo the comments that have already been said. Each game in the series iterates on the mechanics, but they're largely the same throughout. In terms of overall game 3 is probably the best. I'll agree that 2 is the weakest, but one thing I want to point out is that about half the game is played from the perspective of a Covenant Elite. Mechanically it makes no difference as he plays exactly the same as the Chief, with the exception of having a permanent active camo ability. It only lasts for a few seconds and takes time to recharge but I found it quite useful. The same character appears in Halo 3 (and is controlled by the second player in co-op, players 3 and 4 control two other random Elites) but lacks this ability.
  22. I wouldn't mind the Bombcast being so long if it were more interesting. It's getting to the point that with the exception of Dan's craziness, I can basically predict what most of them are going to say about a given topic or game. Idle Thumbs does interesting deep dives on topics and still manages to surprise and amuse me even if I know what the general attitude is going to be. I feel like the Beastcast is going to wind up somewhere in the middle of those two, but at least for now it's different enough from the Bombcast that it's refreshing but not so different that I can't tell it's a Giant Bomb thing.

I didn't have a budget set this time around, but I stuck to my general guidelines of 1) less than $10 2) at least 66% off 3) flash/encore deal. Everything I got falls in one or more of those categories. I got Wolfenstein The New Order Dishonored GOTY Gauntlet Super Time Force Ultra DmC Devil May Cry Grim Fandango Remastered Please, Don't Touch Anything and a bunch of gift games for a friend.
