Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)
SecretAsianMan replied to Irishjohn's topic in Multiplayer Networking
Excellent -
I think you can change them. You just have to unvote something else.
-
Right now I have Gone Astray, Mnemonic, and Eras of Adventure, but that last one might change. I really love the idea of Buried Metropolis but I wouldn't get much out of it because the only access point I ever use is my own. I might end up picking it anyway. I also picked the Cupid game from the Pen Ward ones.
-
There are so many Gone Home likes. Several of them sound interesting but I think I can only bring myself to vote for one of them.
-
Sorry to get back on topic.
-
I'll see if I can make that.
-
Aww, not my left arm, I need that for...uh...something. On second thought, I'd trade it too.

Disagree! I don't even remember what I told you to use but I'm ok with an unblurred version if others are.

Well, there has been a rather large influx of new forum members too. Probably due to lordly pictures of Jake. -
Idle Thumbs 143: This One's Fr4e

Graphics for me tends to be the last thing I care about in a game. I certainly like games to look good, but I'll play a fun or interesting game with poor graphics over a good looking but boring or mechanically broken game. Ideally you want both of course but when forced to choose I'll pick gameplay over looks every time. -
That's a fair assessment. There is definitely some grinding required if you don't want to pay actual money, but I liked the challenge of getting through the game with the free resources. I personally didn't find it significantly more frustrating than the first game and in a few ways I thought it was better.

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes

I watched One Little Ship last night. I think it may be the most ridiculous Star Trek episode I've seen. It was Honey, I Shrunk The Kids in space. -
My job has some of the aspects of the second job (I'm on call every few weeks, at least once a year I have to work very long weeks for several weeks in a row) and I can say that it's very draining, physically and mentally. It makes it hard to stay motivated on things you want to do and I imagine it would have a negative impact on any creative endeavors. Unless money and long term employment are significant factors, I would say the first one sounds better.

This is probably going to be a bit controversial, but I think that at least some of Plants vs. Zombies 2 was made better because of F2P concepts. I know many people were upset that some plants and upgrades were locked behind the pay wall, but I felt this actually made the game more interesting. None of those plants or upgrades are necessary. They make the game a bit easier, which is the part of F2P I'm ok with, but it's entirely possible to beat the game without touching them. By removing some of the plants, the strategy changes and in my opinion became more fun because I couldn't rely on the same tactics from the first PvZ. There was some bullshit F2P stuff like needing to farm for keys but that got removed in a later update.

I almost asked that same question. The difference between something like medicine or science and a creative field like art is that art is purely subjective. There is a real, measurable value to something like curing a disease. While there may be a general consensus that a piece of art is good and has value, I don't think you can categorically state that the world would be worse off without it. Creative works are by their nature at least somewhat reflective of the creator, but if someone becomes publicly known for being a horrible person, it doesn't mean the cure will suddenly stop working for the people who don't like him or work better for the people who do.

Idle Thumbs 144: Gimme Some More

I totally agree with Zack's assessment of Link Between Worlds. What I enjoyed about the game wasn't that it breaks the traditional Zelda structure (although that was cool), but rather that because the items aren't located in the dungeons, the entire dungeon became a puzzle playground centered around a specific item. A normal Zelda dungeon would only be about half this, with the first part directing you toward the item so that you could play around with it. The only thing I wish they had done was have some dungeons that required a mix of items for the puzzles instead of just one. -

Ugh, yesterday was a garbage day for me. I was preparing to do my first Hell run. I had a jetpack, shotgun, and a ton a health thanks to a cooperative mummy. I took care of Olmec no problem, but as I stood on him waiting to enter Hell, a freaking monkey jumped on me, stunned me, and I fell in the lava. Then on the daily I died at 1-2 jumping into the ghost instead of over him. Worst. -

Watched Sacrifice of Angels last night, aka the Big Space Battle. I did not like the ending. I know the writers' motivation for doing it but I still don't like it. I don't know how far Ben and JKO are so I'll spoiler tag the rest. Apologies in advance for the mess of an argument I'm about to make. -
In a setting like Bioshock, I agree that audio recordings are weird because you're carrying around a big, bulky recording device and speaking into it while crazy genetic mutations are murdering each other around you. But in a modern or slightly future setting, I think these would actually make sense. Look at the popularity of "found footage". Everyone has a phone with a camera. Things like Google Glass exist. These are completely valid excuses for logs of everything because people are already making them. Whether or not it makes the narrative better I can't say, but I think you can justify it without breaking immersion in the right context. I also prefer a more subtle type of storytelling, but if the audio log came from someone's voicemail that happened to be recorded during an event, I can believe it.

Watched Sons and Daughers last night. I don't like Worf's kid. I never have. This episode did not change my opinion. Also Worf is a bad dad. He's basically Star Trek's deadbeat dad. -
I will confess to having done that before. Though unlike comic guy, I was happy to be "just friends".

I've sent them Twitter messages saying the forums wants them to open future packages on a stream of some kind. I know someone's seen it because it got favorited, but from what I gather their internet connection at the office is slow so streaming from there isn't an option at the moment. Maybe they can record a video and put it on YouTube or something instead.

I did my first daily in a while today. I didn't manage my bombs well and couldn't get the eye, so I only had 1 bomb and 9 ropes from 1-3 to the end. I got to Olmec, but a dumb error on my part ended with me getting squished. On the plus side, all my practice at robbing shopkeepers paid off and I didn't have to spend anything to get the jetpack and a shotgun.
