I hate Far Cry 2, what am I doing wrong?
SecretAsianMan replied to Ninety-Three's topic in Video Gaming
I don't really care for Far Cry 2 either. It has lots of systems I think are cool, and I certainly liked hearing the stories from the podcast, but my actual experience was mostly frustration and annoyance. I wrote about my final moments with the game in this thread. I can see why other people like it, but it just didn't click with me. I think it's fine to not like it. Honestly I wouldn't force trying to like a game you don't just because you think you should. -
Ginger is a good general anti-nausea cure. I drink ginger tea when I'm sick, helps me a lot, but I don't have any problems with FPS games. As for the topic itself, I'll mostly second the stuff that's been said about MMOs/LOMAs/any kind of PvP game. Time is a big factor in that I don't have much so a requirement of 100+ hours is simply out of the question. Also the fact that most interaction with people in games is pretty terrible unless you actually know them. DayZ is a particular game that I think has a lot of cool things in it, but the combination of all of them makes me never want to play it. I know that I would be constantly stressed out and frustrated. Even watching the Least Dangerous Game stream was somewhat uncomfortable for me and was pretty much only tolerable because of this community and the presence of the Thumbs themselves.

Super Smash Bros. (Spoiler: Snake Kills Ganondorf)

I always assumed that the girl villager was in there as an alternate costume for the villager in the same way the male Wii Fit Trainer is. I don't think they saw a need to explicitly state it, or more accurately I don't think it ever crossed their minds that they had to say it. -

I was disappointed that Sean's dilemma of which type of cat food to pick was not compared to his similar dilemma of which version of Watch Dogs to get. -
It's not out just yet and therefore I can't speak knowledgably about it, but Transistor comes to mind. I've only played a couple PAX demos, but the game involves a time stopping mechanic in which you can move around the combat space and queue up moves that get executed in rapid succession when you return to real time. Queued actions while time is stopped use up a meter that recharges during real time, so the end result is a semi-turn based experience. I don't know if the game will allow for all combat to be real time but the impression from the demo was no because many enemies were designed to be vulnerable to the time mechanic (ie the weak spot is behind them or you need a series of rapid attacks). Another sort of twist that I can think of is Flotilla. Flotilla is a 3d space combat simulator where each sides' turns take place concurrently in real time. Both sides plan their actions (such as move, fire, move while firing) and then those actions occur simultaneously over 30 seconds. Then time stops and you plan again. It's not quite real time because you don't get control during the moves but it's not totally turn based because of the simultaneous action.

I had a friend in college who confused Dennis Haysbert with Denzel Washington. Every time an Allstate commercial came on, he would adamantly insist it was Denzel Washington until I finally called him out on it and bet him $20 he was wrong. Come to think of it, I never did get that money. For reference, Dennis Haysbert on left, Denzel Washington on right.

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I think my saying it lacks substance is incorrect wording on my part. You're right in that the substance is there, it's just really obfuscated behind flashy lights, silly piano, goofy characters and plots, cartoonish chases, etc. The game's mechanics want you to be patient and plan out a perfect heist, but the game's presentation wants you to fuck up that plan so you can indulge in the chaos that follows. It's a weird tug of war and I don't blame people for not being able to find the balancing point. -

I would prefer it if preorder bonuses went back to the way they were when they tried to emulate extra features on DVDs. I like stuff like interviews with developers and commentaries. I think that stuff is fascinating. Look at the interest in 2 Player Production's Double Fine documentaries. One of my favorite things in Valve games is the dev commentary mode. Those are things that I would pay extra for. Neither is necessary for the game itself but they totally add value to the product. Swag and in-game items don't really interest me because they'll be easily forgotten or replaced within the game itself after I get bored of it. I think I remember Jake once mentioned that he would buy Duke Nukem Forever if there was a version that came with previous builds. I would be really into stuff like that. As for DLC gripes, one that always bugged me was Assassin's Creed II (the first ACII, not one of the thousand games that followed). There's two whole memory sections that are "inaccessible" IN THE GAME because they were later released as DLC. I never played either of them so I have no idea what they brought to the narrative, but it really bothered me to have the placeholder for the DLC shoved in my face like that. -

As one of those people, I agree. Monaco to me is like a couch co-op party game, sans the couch part. The hilarious, Benny Hill-esque chases and chaos are just stupid moments of outrageous ridiculousness. They're a lot of fun if you're in the right mood and have the right company, but not enough to sustain a long term experience. I like that it rewards silliness with MORE silliness, but at some point that gets old and you want a game with more substance. -
Me FORE! (I'm actually not, I just couldn't help myself. I am the worst.)

I managed to hold out for a while, but I just caved and read the last two chapters posted. I want the rest. I want them now. Why don't I have them now.

So is that going to be your last hurrah? I know the thread is The Big Lucasarts Playthrough but there are other adventure games out there too. Most of them won't be nearly as good as the highs you've already hit, but there's still lots of great games out there.

I had one of those. Still do apparently.

I assume you mean downtime at work. I too do what Zeus said and visit the forums, probably far more than I really should. I also try to get up instead of sitting down. I'm almost always thirsty and I keep a water bottle at my desk, but I purposely only fill it part way so that I get up and walk to the water fountain more often.

Not only that, but the art and sound are things I want to enjoy slowly since they're both likely to be fantastic if Bastion was any indication. I don't want to be rushing to get as much game in a short a time as possible out of it. I think playing it fast and loose would leave me unsatisfied.

I really loved Mario Kart 64... but I suspect it doesn't hold up. Also still not reading your posts.

My electric mower arrived today. I didn't have time to do the whole lawn but I cut a small portion of the front. It seems to work pretty well. I'm glad I got a self propelled one because my lawn is uneven. Next week I'll have to see if I can do the whole yard in one charge. One thing I'm liking a lot about it is that it's really light compared to a gas mower. It also came with a bag and can mulch too. So far it seems like a good investment.

My favorite part was hearing Chris continually say "gimme that" while Sean was talking about the Goldfish mascot, to the point that Sean had to say "I'm gonna give them to you in one second" like he was talking to a 5 year old. I imagined Chris pawing the air and reaching for the box while Sean was holding them away. Also Nick's licorice babies have arrived at the office. So the set is now complete.

To be fair, I don't actually hate it. I pretty much stick to the speed limits too. In that particular instance though, people were literally driving way under the limit at the exact worst moment for me.

Gaming can be expensive if you want to keep up the latest and greatest. But if the zeitgeist isn't particularly important to you, I think it can be managed fairly cheaply. I played both Bioshock Infinite and Batman: Arkham City this year. I got both for less than $20. Bioshock I didn't enjoy as much but Batman was great and I think I more than got my money's worth out of both. Stuff like Steam sales, GOG, GMG, etc. are great if you're willing to wait a bit. Keeping up with the newest thing will be expensive for any hobby but there are ways to stretch a budget. Time is the real enemy. Of course this really only holds true for single player stuff. Multiplayer obviously has a much shorter shelf life.

I actually have not preordered it yet despite all that I've said. Mostly because when it does get released I'm not going to have time to play it. I'd rather save it for when I do have time and not rush through it because I have to get as much play in as possible.

Or at least kept compatibility with the Gamecube controller.

I certainly never read your posts. I'm assuming this post is appropriate since I don't read your posts.

I think it is a bit different for me since I have seen and played it at PAX so I do have an idea what to expect. For me, a Supergiant game with music by Darren Korb and voice work by Logan Cunningham is basically enough to sell me on whatever they want to make. The fact that I've seen and heard it only adds to that, but I can certainly understand wanting that part. When I said I was glad they don't have a big campaign, I didn't mean there shouldn't be one at all. You certainly need some word out there and it does feel like there really isn't any.

They had the first demo at PAX East 2013, then another at PAX Prime 2013, then again at PAX East 2014. I think each demo was a little different (I only played the first 2) and there was a lot of buzz about the game at the convention. I'm actually quite glad they're not doing a giant marketing campaign because I've gotten sick of a game before even playing it due to marketing. The demo naturally only had snippets of the soundtrack, but man it was beautiful.
