  1. I have spent a lot of money in Dota 2. None of it is on content that would otherwise be blocked from me, besides some minigames/extra goals (i.e., "do this and you get some extra drops") that I otherwise wouldn't see, but are ultimately completely unimportant (and often I don't even like them, they just come as a side bonus to what I'm really paying for). I have problem doing so, in no small part because none of the actual game content is locked behind the money. It's all completely cosmetic. And it's great!* Even so, there are people who describe it as exploitative, and that baffles me to no end. The whole game is there already. I like the game, so I spend money on the game. I've been called an idiot no small amount of times. I've been called weak-minded, etc. Whatever, dude, at least I'm enjoying my life instead of wasting my time insulting you for not being into exactly what I'm into. *I actually don't even have a real problem with the more traditional F2P model (i.e., Actual Game Content being locked behind a paywall, unless you play enough to unlock it), provided I actually can attain everything in a timely manner. League of Legends, for example, is an awful model, unless you've been playing since the beginning. No person coming in now will be able to reasonably obtain all the characters, and having all the characters available in a game like that is extremely important!
  2. Also I hope to have the recording we just did done in less than a week!!!
  3. Well, the website is a permanent fix. But yes it should probably be in the OP I guess. Although nobody new is reading this thread anymore!
  4. Social Justice

wow that was easy wish someone had thought of that before
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    I'm a developer.
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

Weird, jeans fresh out of the dryer are the least comfortable. They're so stiff. Bjorn is actually just a big baby. Confirmed at lunch.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

I've worn jeans for multiple days for years. Well over a decade! A week tops, but usually less. Never only a day. (Unless I spill something on 'em, I suppose... Fun fact: those farts don't actually seep into the cloth and persist unless you've got like wet farts. Source: I fart all day err day and sometimes I just stick my head right in there and breath deep and it smells beautiful.
  8. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yes, exactly. Why not? You still haven't provided, like, an actual reason for Kotaku to not report on these things. Vague hand-wavey accusations of immorality aren't really relevant here. Wielding sarcasm in an effort to demean arguments that you disagree with isn't typically a good way to convince someone.
  9. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

They aren't getting any credit, besides personal vindication, I suppose. But no one but the source and Kotaku knows. And... why does that mean Kotaku shouldn't report on it? You can (and should!) argue that the person doing the leaking is in the wrong, this I will absolutely and always agree with. But Kotaku's in the clear on this.
  10. Other podcasts

That was me, and yeah. Or at least it was also me. I think part of the problem for me, is he really does sound smug as fuck when he's advertising. When he's teaching me about something, I love it, and it comes off how it's probably intended - a guy genuinely excited about and interested in sharing this information. But when he's preaching at me about how great his podcast network is and how it'd be just so lovely if I pitched in, I find it annoying!
  11. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

The published an article explaining what happened because people were asking about their Fallout 4 review. That's it. They aren't acting like martyrs. The article was an informational one. That's it.
  12. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

So, what...? Video games press exists to appease developers and publishers? Or...? What exactly are you suggesting their purpose is? Are they only for reviews? Are they only for previews provided they're officially supported previews, i.e. publisher-held preview events? If not that, then what? Where is your line on what is and is not "appropriate" for an entity that is wholly separate from the publisher itself to report on in regards to that publisher?
  13. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yep, I would agree with this entirely.
  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think it's hilarious to suggest that Kotaku is at all in the wrong here. What, exactly, did they do that's bad? They reported information that they received. And it wasn't just a screenshot, they had other information, too.
  15. Buying a New PC

the numerical nomenclature on video cards has literally always been bonkers there was never a time when it made sense they reset numbers every few years because reasons the marketing teams for these hardware developers need to be drawn and quartered what i'm saying is i can't help but also go nvidia cause ati/amd still sucks
  16. I Had A Random Thought...

you just gotta learn to drive like an edgar allan pro
  17. Warcraft 3 FFA

Slack can't do voice chat so it wouldn't make sense to use that. (Not that I'm playing, but I like to have voice chat when I'm playing games, so I just assume that's important to everyone else!)
  18. Warcraft 3 FFA

Don't use Skype. Everybody, stop using Skype. There are infinitely better voip alternatives, and they're free! Try Discord!
  19. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

That's basically what I meant, although I didn't state it clearly. There's a similar distinction for high level and low level programming, although the context of programming obviously changes its meaning somewhat. Low level programming means you're doing stuff in more and more detail. Assembly being the lowest of them all, as you're basically (usually) programming the machine with one-to-one commands at that point. High level meaning something like, well, any popular programming language. C#, C++, or scripting languages like Python, whatever. Obviously to varying degrees of "high". Here the languages are written more for usability than efficiency. The lower the level you code at, the more efficient you can make things, but also the more work it takes to make things... work, because you have to be so much more detailed. Programming is fantasy, is what I'm saying. No I don't know why I took the time to type this out. I'm bored at work.
  20. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

I'm assuming that high concept is shortened from high level concept, and high level generally means what gorm is saying it would mean for high concept!
  21. I Had A Random Thought...

those were amazing edgar allan tho
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

I think popular discourse in general could do with a lot of reduction in rhetoric, to be honest. People love to throw out words that don't actually mean what they really WANT to say, or as a way to avoid saying what they want to say. This word in particular sounds vaguely intelligent, as far as words can, uh, sound intelligent, and so a lot of people use it as shorthand to dismiss a work. Period. But to address your actual point: I don't see the problem in demanding that people treat the language they're using with the same respect and consideration that they ostensibly would like the work they're describing to treat ITS subject. Fuck yeah, I want people to use words correctly! (I also don't agree that "intimate knowledge of a work" requires cited anything, as you surmised.)
