  1. I'm not surprised by that at all. Amazon's been building a gaming division behind the scenes for a while.

Kill la Kill redeemed itself on episode four!
  3. anime

Well, color me surprised. I found myself very much enjoying not only the latest episode of Space Dandy, but ALSO the zombie episode. I'm also coming to appreciate Space Dandy's meandering plot progression* in much the same way I did Cowboy Bebop. Like, what was up with that chick in the ramen episode? They played her off like she was going to be important, and then she just... disappeared. I expected her to maybe be this series' Faye, but that didn't happen. Now there's this kid in this latest episode, and she's just kind of... gone. Will she be back next episode? Also Dandy is a cool dude. *Then again, is there even a plot? There just seem to be some common characteristics in each episode (i.e., the three main characters, Boobies, and hunting for unregistered aliens (which when I phrase it like that makes me laugh at the possible confusion one might have at reading it out of context)), but the zombie episode, if it were "canon", so to speak, would've gravely affected every following episode. So, in that sense, too, I'm finding this show a little more attractive. It's more about the character development than it is the overarching plot. Like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Except it's also a parody at the same time. I'm happier with the series than I was before, that's for sure.
  4. You'll never find me arguing that graphics are unimportant in video games, but KING is going just a bit too far. I had a hard time responding to that statement without snorting in derision. I think I'll just go ahead and snort anyway. In derision.
  5. Is free to play inherently evil?

I worked at a free-to-play mobile company for almost a year and can say with 100% certainty that it's not inherently evil, but most people who employ it as a characteristic of game design are. The things that company would do to make money made me sick. Not really sick but whatever. It was gross.
  6. I'm very familiar with all the arguments in favor of Crysis. They just don't fly with me. The game was nothing special, as much as everyone tells me it should be. All that sweet stuff under the hood just didn't ever find it's way to the surface. Also, never lead off on a response to gameplay discussion with "The graphics"! Come on, that's a little awkward. Especially when the game under question is fucking Crysis. We all know Crysis looks amazing.
  7. anime

grumble grumble guess i'll give it another shot, then
  8. I haven't actually played Far Cry 2 but man I think Crysis is really just kind of totally mediocre? It's a wholly competent shooter... And that's pretty much it. I understand what it is that made some people love it, but to me all that stuff just felt like the typical shooter fare except you could turn invisible sometimes too and then play hide and seek for a while. And to be honest even the alien stuff felt mostly the same, except in slightly more confined spaces. Like, definitely worse, but not so much worse that it made the earlier stuff look better by comparison. I guess I'm kind of weird in this regard, though.
  9. I love me some Olan Rogers. His videos always make my day.

AWW SHIT YA DONE GONE DID IT DIDN'T YA GORMONGOUS (i'm sorry i'll leave now)
  12. Feminism

Oh, absolutely. At the very least, whatever I imagine might be triggered by a trigger warning has got to be less bad than being blindsided by some detailed description of a traumatic event. Article is kind of interesting. It's kind of shitty that useful things lose meaning like that. I'm probably part of the problem. U:
  13. Video Game mechanics to retire

Dishonored's morality system is definitely dumb! It's based on the idea that you killing a few dudes completely ruins all of society now and forever, and also that you killing a few dudes in the name of saving the world makes you a terrible person. Like, it's all based on how many people you kill in each mission. That is its entire morality system! It just makes no sense. There's no real logical connection between your actions and what happens at the end.
  14. Feminism

I understand the need for something like it, but isn't a "trigger warning" in and of itself basically a trigger? I feel like if something terrible had happened to me, and someone tried to warn me that what I was about to read was going to remind me of that terrible thing, I'd immediately be reminded of that terrible thing. I am not at all saying that we should just throw all conversation about everything around willy nilly or that trigger warnings are worthless, but it's something that's always sort of confused me. Anyway, yeah, that's pretty terrible, but I'm with clyde. If I was going to condemn one man's work because he's done things I find disgusting, well, most of humanity has done something I find disgusting, so I pretty much wouldn't be able to enjoy any piece of art.

  20. Amateur Game Making Night

Here's a thing I made a while ago and sort of gave up on because I couldn't figure out how to make it fun. GIVE ME YOUR IDEAS. Left-clicking spawns an explosion that knocks the ball around. Middle-clicking spawns the object displayed in the upper right corner. Scrolling the mouse wheel selects different objects to spawn. There are explosive barrels and two types of ships - one which breaks apart into the other upon colliding with the ball or an explosion. Also here's my horrible blog posts documenting what little progress I made. Key takeaways: I recently had a pretty sick idea for a sort-of-platformer that I'm interested in exploring, and once I shape the idea better in my head, I'll write something up about it and get your opinions, or not, whatever works. EDIT: Whoa, I just realized that this build is actually older than I thought (not much, but old enough to make a difference). I'm going to upload the latest build sometime tonight, I think, with some more thoughts.
  21. Other podcasts

I've probably already said this before in this thread (because I take almost every opportunity presented to do so), but god I cannot stand Rebel FM because of one of its main hosts. He's always got this totally smug attitude about anything shitty in gaming. "Well, you're doing it to yourself, gamers!" I just fucking hate his smug ass fuck. Okay sorry. He's probably a fine person in real life.
  22. subtlety in dialogue?

That's certainly a big problem with games where choice matters. But it's entirely possible to craft an experience where the player doesn't and shouldn't have any choice, or if they do have a choice, it's very minor and doesn't affect the larger story.
  23. Getting into the industry?

Sure if you get a shitty job.
  24. Recently completed video games

I've been binging on shitty RPGs lately. I don't really know why, I just feel like it. So I've beaten both Risen and Risen 2, a German RPG series. There's something... about that whole thing with customizing my character, and making choices that affect the path I'm taking. Like, choosing to side with the freedom fighters (who later turn out to be NOT QUITE GOOD PEOPLE oh what a twist) instead of the cult-like overlords (who later turn out to be NOT QUITE BAD PEOPLE oh what a twist) in the first game results in you not being able to learn magic. Likewise, in the second game, siding with the natives grants you access to voodoo (because magic is banned now, only voodoo is available! (??)), and locks you out of access to rifles. Anyway, the games aren't really good, but I found myself enjoying them, anyway. Also Risen 2 is just like... there are the natives, who are basically African tribes, and the Inquisition, who are all a bunch of British dudes, and they're all "hey these savages are good for nothing but slavery" and ugh how pathetic to fall back on that just to emphasize that the good guys aren't good. Other than that, both games are basically standard fantasy fare, although not so much the dragon kind as the weird little goblin creatures and giant bugs kind.
