In MUDs proper, often not for your run of the mill player. But in the weird taxonomic jumble of MUSH/MUSE/MUCK/MOO etc etc. there's some where that is the case. On the other hand, it is worth noting that privileged, moderator/admin accounts could do this in more places. Users with such permissions are sometimes referred to as...WIZARDS.

did you stick around to the end, Gormongous? That was pretty amazing. I could almost envision a paradox interactive black ops game hijacker manufacturing deus ex machina for maximum drama in streamed games "Well these kids have got to get to work the next day so we better give them something totally preposterous to end on. But we can't make it too easy. Let them blow the royal coffers on failed attempts first." -
Crusader Kings II: The Triumph of Ragnar

I grabbed all the dlc (i think) and started an earlier start date game and roving vikings (? I think? my history is kind of the pits) are total jerks. have had to bankrupt myself twice just to raise mercenaries to fend them off. -
Just came in here to post about that. Looks like Paradox knows how to strike while the iron's hot. I was definitely on the fence, but 75% is too deep to pass up.

As Sean I paced the battlements, he mused to himself, "Perhaps it's not the best idea to kill all the wives." -

This is the first screen where you have more than 1 thing you can click on after character creation: Aside from randomly dying due to picking the "randomly generated" option in character creation, I'm pretty sure it's impossible to die before the game shows you "$20000. Still not enough"- 61 replies

I feel like you're either being facetious here or not giving the game a fair shake. If you pick guide, then tips, before starting a new game it says 'save a million dollars to win the game'.Even if you miss that, there is a an area in the game that is explicitly gated off until you've accumulated a million dollars. Beyond which, the title of the game is "Ultra Business Tycoon III" so a reasonable conclusion would be that the goal is to earn money. None of which is to say that you have to like the game, but "no idea what the goal is" really?!?- 61 replies

I guess your mileage may vary, but if you haven't played it to completion it's bound up in spoilery kind of stuff. I mean telling you wouldn't necessarily entirely ruin the experience, but it would lessen its effectiveness. Just on an immediate level, there is the surreal/absurd stuff that I find charming in a lot of her work, but there's another more personal layer to this one in particular that reveals itself as you play through to the end. edit: Beyond that, the writing is just really good IMO. Here are some cherry picked IGN.COM style box quotes from my metafilter post about it (which ends up being somewhat spoilery, the quotes I've picked below are not): "Ayep. That was worth finishing. Holy hell." "God, what a great game. Just a great freaking game." "Done. That was the best-written game I have ever played." "The most artful games these days are made by those who have the most to say to a world that doesn't really listen. I liked this more than I can accurately describe. I'll be sharing this with my friends." "Just (finally) finished it. Still trying to collect myself. Wow." "Awesome game, unbelievable gut punch of an ending." "Gah, that was killer. Really powerful. Hats off."- 61 replies

I haven't played a lot of it, but I did grab it. Seems like a visual novel thing except you get to run around and snag collectibles and apparently there's some kind of card battling thing, but I haven't got there yet. The backgrounds are very pretty.

Just a heads up, Porpentine's latest is amazing. http://aliendovecote.com/uploads/twine/tycoon/crime.html You'll need this: http://aliendovecote.com/uploads/twine/tycoon/nfo.png And you should also check out the earlier Howling Dogs if you somehow missed it: http://aliendovecote.com/uploads/twine/howlingdogs/howlingdogs.html#2o- 61 replies

oh hai cubby. People come visit when my gate is open and I have no idea who they are because their 3ds name does not match the name they use on whichever forum I added them from. Congratulations for not being one of those people!

viscera cleanup stream was great. also, can't wait for the leaked hidden camera footage of nick doing intensive street fighter training to ensure his victory.

The Familiar by Mark Z Danielewski (of House of Leaves) although I still haven't picked up The Fifty Year Sword now that it's not impossible to find/impossibly expensive anymore. 'The End of Endings' which is the next novel from Steven Hall (of The Raw Shark Texts) I'm also generally up for anything by Orhan Pamuk though I have no idea if he has anything slated in the near future.

You guys. I have it all figured out. Gone Home was originally conceived as a licensed tie-in for Mission Impossible 4. Ghost Protocol. Think about it. Kojima Productions caught wind of it and didn't want to get left behind in the tactical stealth espionage poltergeist arms race, hence Phantom Pain. It all makes so much sense now.
