  1. DOTA 2

So, this might sound rather silly, but I'm a bit afraid of Dota. I have played LoL a fair bit and was ok at it. That is, I had fun playing in low quality games. I come and go from it and am about to start up again but I figured I would give Dota a try. However, I played HoN once and people sucked. Yeah, I'm a baby, whatever, but I'm really busy at work and time at home is often spent with my wife rather than in front of the computer. So I can't really put a lot of my efforts into getting really good at something. Also, I'm bad at games. I got to silver league in Starcraft 2 once. It was incredibly exciting. So, is it mad to have a go at Dota or am I just completely over-thinking this?
  2. Ditto, except I'm at a conference from January 2nd until the 6th and school starts on the 7th. I know that this is going to be tough for most of you. I will however get the game because I'd love to be in on this. I've always wanted to play Shadow and Colossus.
  3. Polygon (internet website)

To be fair, they were the ones who talked a big game about doing something entirely new. They even made a film about themselves that lacked even a modicum of self-awareness. They openly talked about how revolutionary they would be, and it turns out that they're another gaming site with a nicer design than usual. That in and of itself didn't annoy me all that much, or at least not any more than that "year off the Internet" bullshit on The Verge, but this cribs feature is genuinely terrible.
  4. Polygon (internet website)

Hear, hear. Honestly, there are very few people around this forum who will bash something just because it's cool, or popular, or new. The Polygon site has been a joke from the start. I'm at the point where it's starting to affect my opinion of The Verge as well.
  5. Planetside 2

I played this for a few minutes. There was something really amazing about a hundred players running up a hill together, flying things and driving tanks and all the rest. But I had no fucking clue what I was doing. I've also been ruined by console shooters I think. It wasn't immediately clear who I was supposed to be shooting and what I was supposed to be getting up to.
  6. GTA V

So... is it just me, or does the fact that the word "five" is emblazoned across the roman numeral for five in the logo bother anybody else? I feel like I'm not usually this pedantic but I can't get past it. Grand Theft Auto Five... Five.
  7. Your first gaming device...

I grew up in a house with an Atari 2600. Apparently when allowed near a television remote I would switch back into "gaming mode" where I basically careened around the chair (I was small) and cursed up a storm. My grandmother refused to believe that I had learned these words from my uncles, who were in their early teens. After that we had a keyboard thing that plugged into the telly and had a floppy drive (3.5 inch) in the side... a Commodore 64? Not sure really. I got an NES for Christmas years later and it was a big deal.
  8. History in Video Games

Yeah, to be fair, it might just be an affirmation of their office vibe. I've worked in Southeast Asia and East Asia, and particularly in places like Malaysia where you have mixes of racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds, it can be so normal it's not worth commenting on, but it's not necessarily a bad idea to overtly point out that "we all respect each other." What I'm trying and possibly failing to say is that that little message might be more for the team than for us. Or than for lawyers. But hey.
  9. History in Video Games

Honestly, the latest Assassin's Creed is the most intrigued I've been in the whole series, because I'm genuinely interested in what they plan to do with the history, exactly. I think they've gotten away with having fun with it (da Vinci and I are tight!) but not putting themselves in weird positions where anyone other than a lifetime expert in Renaissance Europe would say "well, THAT's bullshit." I mean, except for the sci-fi stuff.
  10. Polygon (internet website)

I don't mean for things to get too cozy in here but I'm with ThunderPeel all the way. I can't stand the idea that people feel they can act like dicks and then get incredibly entitled and butthurt when someone says "I don't like it when people are dicks on my site." Again, I'm not convinced this Polygon example fits it, but on the wider question I completely agree. Frankly, if you're going to write something down online that you wouldn't say to the person's face, you're being rude and in no small way a coward.
  11. Polygon (internet website)

I don't agree that politeness is subjective, at all. I would have no problem with a site deciding it was going to kick comments that weren't being civil. However, The Verge comments are constantly rife with completely bullshit flame wars and other crap, and Vox has never shown any interest in editing those. As far as I can tell, Polygon doesn't have a track record of curating comments. So, that would call this particular issue into question.
  12. Polygon (internet website)

I agree. If they're deleting comments that are pointing out it was kind of sketchy, that's not cool. But I have no problem at all with actually moderating comments. People are jerks on the Internet. Speaking of respecting the owner of the house and its guests, I have this problem at work all the time. It's just depressing how rubbish people will behave unless they're essentially ordered to conduct themselves.
  13. XCOM Enemy Unknown

It's embarrassing (despite the fact I'm playing in a room on my own) how often I stick a sniper up in an elevated position, giddy with all of the hit and damage bonuses that will entail, only for the enemy to just look up and take him/her out. I really need to at least get a flying SHIV up there as cover. On second playthrough on Normal (after my failure the first time around), there's a long way to go but I've already lost Canada, China and Mexico and France, Germany, the UK, the US and Japan aren't far behind. I'm getting decent money in but I have no idea how I'm going to keep going. But I will!
  14. XCOM Enemy Unknown

I pick the snap shot skill too. I like having the option of moving the snipers around a little and putting them on overwatch. Especially on maps where you have to shift your squad a little bit away from focusing on enemies to the north from enemies to the west, for example.
  15. XCOM Enemy Unknown

And God bless you for bringing it to my attention!
  16. XCOM Enemy Unknown

It does seem a bit... weak.
  17. XCOM Enemy Unknown

I'm with you mate. I'm not sure which is more heartbreaking and frustrating, mind control of half the damn team panicking and running out of the evac zone,
  18. XCOM Enemy Unknown

Oh man, Chrysalids.... eff those dudes. Just failed my first game (on normal). I had a few rough missions in a row in the middle, but my biggest problem was definitely that I only had four satellites in the air. I had no money. It was ridiculous. Watched the cinematic for the fail state, immediately launched a new game. Still on normal, but now using Ironman, because that was my approach anyway and the auto-save sounds very convenient. I'm already doing a lot better; basically, being very very cautious and actually using the team fairly well. In the last game, I hit my sweet spot taking on squads of thin men with lasers and titan armour, so there's a way to go yet really.
  19. XCOM Enemy Unknown

Cheers man. I was wondering why things got a bit easier again. Ultimately I haven't invested properly as I've gone and I'm unlikely to finish the game this playthrough. A second playthrough is inevitable and welcome.
  20. XCOM Enemy Unknown

So, noob/baby question for you lads... I'm playing normal (never played the original) and have recently learned the beautiful pain of losing all but one of my guys. Twice in a row. And then... pretty much running out of soldiers. I'm not going back to an earlier save because... I don't have one. Also, that would really ruin the fun I'm having. "Play classic with Ironman!" I'm sure some people are saying. Well, I'm not good at video games. ANYWAY. Question is this: are the enemies random or do you get steadily more difficult enemies as the game goes on? I was getting absolutely MURDERED for what seemed like weeks in-game and suddenly the last two missions that have popped up have been thin men. I can handle thin men.
  21. Borderlands 2

Yeah, I've been playing some XCOM recently. Every intention to go back to Borderlands 2 (and I actually will go back, it's not just talk) but work is manic and gaming time has to be rationed out. Still, I may get the Season Pass yet. I loved the first one to bits and I'm having a ball with this one.
  22. Books on Sport

Hello all, So, any recommendations on books dealing with modern/popular sports? I don't mean the Liverpool Football Club Annual 2008 or anything. For instance, I am finally reading through (and nearly finished) Jonathan Wilson's The Inverted Pyramid, a book on the evolution of soccer/football tactics throughout the twentieth century. It's fantastic. I also recommend Joe Posnanski's The Machine, a book on the 1975 Cincinnatti Reds and Bryant Howard's Juicing the Game. I've got The Ball is Round and Soccernomics on my to-read list. Oh, and Ball Four. Not sure how many sports fans are around but I'd love to hear about notable books in this area.
  23. Torchlight II

Works for me. The redistribution of gaming wealth, rather.
  24. Torchlight II

Well, with online multiplayer I feel like thumbs will be playing Torchlight 2 for a long time. It seems like the original was a big hit around here (I loved it... got a bit sidetracked but spent a lot more time on it than I did on Diablo 3) so I don't think it's going anywhere. I've already gotten Borderlands 2, having forgotten about Torchlight 2's release date being so close. So my decision has been made for now!
  25. Borderlands 2

Just started it, and already very happy (I bloody loved the first one). I even like the way the opening credits sequence calls back to the opening credits sequence of the first game. Funny thing, though; this is my first FPS back on a console in months. I've been playing bits and pieces of FPS games on the PC, though mostly RPGs, Brink being the main exception. The controller feels WEIRD. And very sluggish. Is this what you PC guys have been dealing with all these years? PS - By "you PC guys" I mean thumbs who have considered the PC their main gaming machine for years. I started using a PC for gaming primarily only in the last year or so. Before that (or at least between then and my teens) I was all about consoles.
