  1. Horizon: Zero Dawn

I had heard or seen nothing of this game until a week or so ago, but the reviews and 10 minutes of a Quick Look convinced that I probably should get this game. I'm really impressed by the game so far. I also like the main character a lot. I'm afraid that the game might become hard/frustrating for me, as I'm usually not into fast-paced, difficult actions games and especially boss encounters, but hopefully I can over-level my way through the obstacles. The Lure call and Silent Strike combo is really forgiving at least, so I can at least deal with packs of smaller enemies stealthily. The tutorial was fine in my opinion.
  2. The Idle Book Club 23: Silence

Interesting point. While I realized that Rodrigues was continuously drawing parallels between his experiences and those of Christ, I assumed that some of the references were for the benefit of the Japanese readers who may not be as closely familiar with the crucifixion of Jesus and the details surrounding it (I have no idea if this is true, by the way). I appreciated the ending where Rodrigues finally "got" Kichijiro, and consequently many other things. I just wish this point could have been reached with a character that felt less like a caricature. I'm not extremely eager to see the film, but I'm somewhat curious about how he is represented in the movie, because, in my head, he ended up becoming almost Gollum-esque.
  3. The Idle Book Club 23: Silence

I absolutely loved the description of Dejima in The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet By David Mitchell and was hoping to get similar Westerner in strange historical Japan vibe out of this book. I quickly realized that this expectation was foolish considering the nationality and the background of the author, and that what I was actually reading was a novel about a strange westerner in historical Japan. This revelation (which should have been obvious) was interesting, but the book itself was less so. The constant drawing of parallels between the story of Silence and the life of Christ – I think Rodrigues was reminded three separate times in 30 or so pages of the soldier who offered some vinegar to Christ on the cross – quickly become tiresome for me as a person who despite being an atheist has been surrounded by Christian imagery my whole life. I also wish Kichijiro – who had travel great distances to move the plot forward, since he was seemingly the only person able to do so – had felt a bit more like an actual person and less like a stereotypical Judas/weakling character of Christian teachings. Despite sounding pretty negative, I found the silence of God an interesting subject and the last part of the book was actually quite good. I just wish the novel had started shortly before Rodrigues' capture and focused more on his life after becoming an apostate, since I didn't find the first part of the book very interesting both in terms of plot or the philosophical/religious content.
  4. Movie/TV recommendations

I watched all the movies for the first time some time ago and wrote my thoughts here (can't find it anymore). For me, Fast Five is the pinnacle of the series, and the following two movies take a steep dive towards the pit of cynicism and other action movie conventions I detest (needlessly sadistic baddies, unnecessary cheap deaths, etc.) I don't even know if I want to watch the upcoming film. Edit: Oh.. it was split into its own thread.
  5. I would love to see Jessica Fletcher decide to investigate a murder at Universal studios, walk out of the set of Murder She Wrote/Jaws to Universal Studios, do some detective stuff, walk back to the set of MSW, realize that what she just did was fucked up, take off the VR helmet, realize she is taking the Unversal Studios tour, freak out, wake up, and realize she exist within the snow globe of the kid from St. Elsewhere. Also, Batman '66 is amazing. Also, I guess I need to watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
  6. The McElroy Family of Products

Ok, thanks for the clarification! It seems like I had not missed anything, except for the fan favorite thing.
  7. The McElroy Family of Products

I binge-listened to the early episodes while playing American Truck Simulator and may not have focused on the details of the story enough, Anyway, I'm so glad that the arc finally went somewhere that wasn't a succession of torture chambers. Can't wait for the next episode.
  8. I knew that the meme fame would get to his head. Seriously though, Drew was my favorite Giant Bomb guy and I'm really sad to see him leave. I will miss his jokes that no one notices.
  9. I came across this show because it was trending on PocketCasts, and I think it may well end up becoming my favorite podcast. The cockroaches driving Uber was such an obscure reference that it threw me off for a bit, but I quickly got acclimated to the flow of the show. The wild ride from hawks on a plane through grimy Snagglepuss to Terminator maintenance and upkeep was an absolute pleasure to follow. My only complaint is that all of the hosts sound pretty much identical, apart from the one with the thick German accent. Maybe in future episodes you could state your name first every time you start talking.
  10. The McElroy Family of Products

I liked the episode! Much better than I had feared. The focus on their home town is a good idea and really sweet.
  11. Idle Thumbs: A Patreon

Happy to support this. Day one pledg.
  12. Books, books, books...

My expectations for George Saunders' Lincoln in the Bardo were pretty high, but somehow it managed to exceed them. What a beautiful thing! It has a really interesting structure that actually serves the story well, and the story itself simply oozes empathy. Just what I want from a Saunders book.
  13. I like the concept and the teaser a lot. Looking forward to the first full episode!
  14. The McElroy Family of Products

Hmm.. interesting. I used to queue up a few episodes of 99% Invisible when I went for a jog, but it was basically impossible to manage because I had to skip forward the beginning, then go back a bit because I skipped too much ahead, then after 10 minutes skip the rest of the episode, and repeat. I was listening to the older episodes, because I had just subscribed to the podcast.
  15. The McElroy Family of Products

I forward skip through the money zone and the ending in 30 second increments when I'm listening to the MBMBaM. I know I might be missing some goofs, but the ads can be a bit repetitive. It is not a huge issue for me, though. The content to ad ratio is still much much better than with 99% Invisible.
  16. DISHONORED 2: MISS HONORED

The first two missions were quite rough for me as well. While I can see what they were going for, I didn't think it was a good idea to make you play through the first mission without any powers. That combined with the unfamiliarity with the mechanics made it the most difficult missions for me so far. The second mission wasn't particularly great either, and I remember having troubles understanding how civilians react to my presence in different situations. The locations can feel a bit labyrinthine and confusing, at least the city areas, but using the heart to locate the runes and bonecharms also helps you to discover the key locations. In my opinion, for the most parts, Dishonored 2 level design is pretty great and I find many areas are more interesting than those in the first game. Missions 1 and 2 are not representative of the whole game. As for the stealth, I have to admit that I usually load a save when I get noticed, so I don't know how Dishonored 2 compares to the first game in terms of dealing with the situation when stealth fails. They do give you some really nice tools to deal with the enemies, though. If you are playing with Emily and willing to incapacitate enemies, I recommend you to invest in Domino early on. It lets you link the enemies so that when you deal with one of them, the rest will suffer the same fate.
  17. I haven't listened to the newest episode yet. I just want to say that Idle Thumbs was the first, and for several year the only, podcast I listened to, and that I have enjoyed every episode immensely. I still play regularly but games have become less and less of a "passion" for me and in thought and discussion they occupy the same space as book, films, TV, series, cultural phenomena and robot news, which is why I didn't really pay attention to the podcast's subtle move away from games in favor of other topics before it was pointed out explicitly. I understand that moving away from gaming might be a deal-breaker for some, but for me it is not an issue at all. Nevertheless, I can see the point in creating a new podcast and reserving Idle Thumbs for game related discussion. While I don't really differentiate between game, movie, music, etc. related discussions, I can appreciate the point that as you all have worked in game industry for years, you have a somewhat unique perspective on that particular subject. No matter how you decide to continue, I will be happy to listen to 3 friends talk about subjects that they are passionate about in a relaxed, non-rigid form. So I personally hope you don't change the form too much even if the focus is going to change a bit.
  18. Oh my god, I love the head hiding animation!
  19. Dune

All the background work has already been done. Seriously though, interested to see where this goes. I quite liked Dune and love some of Lynch's stuff, but I have never seen the film.
  20. The McElroy Family of Products

Yeah, the time chalice arc was great, and the overall contrast between that arc and this one, is why I dislike what I have heard of this one so much.
  21. The McElroy Family of Products

For the same reason I don't like that pets, children, and love interests are killed in movies just to give the protagonist the justification and motivation for his carnage. This is not on the same level, obviously, but I'm definitely more interested in the characters and the story of The Adventure Zone than the silly dice rolling bit, and if the protagonists turn out to be mutilated and otherwise tortured just because the leveling system in D&D is stupid or whatever, then it is gonna feel really stupid and disrespectful of the characters.
  22. The McElroy Family of Products

God I hope the abuse serves a better purpose than just to strip the characters that we will be saying goodbye soon of their powers. If it only served a stupid game mechanics purpose, it would feel even more gross to me.
