  1. anime

Right - that show was great. I have also watched Paprika - super fucking odd but beautiful. Will check out the recommendations if they are available on a digital distribution channel (I don't download anything) and let you know how I fare. I am curious by what you mean by vanilla when you refer to titles. Edit: Weird that I somehow watched loads of Satoshi's work without even realising it - I wonder what it was that attracted me to it? I didn't think that he had a distinct style (outside of the dreams versus reality themes).
  2. anime

I liked Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Beserk and Samurai Champloo as TV shows; I also watched this one that had different stories and involved a guy on a pair of rollerblades hitting them with a baseball bat (it had the creepiest intro) and thought that was weird and quite wonderful. Perfect Blue, Akira, Patlabor Mobile Police (1, not 2) and the Studio Ghibli stuff as films were all pretty excellent. But I imagine a lot of this is quite outdated given that most of those shows/films were at least 10 years old. Evangelion is awful and I hated Escaflowne as other reference points.
  3. anime

So, I've been through the last few pages and I can see some talk about anime that sounds better than what I have been watching recently, my main injection of interest is because I have a few friends who talk about it all the time and recommend stuff to me so when most of it appeared on Netflix I thought I would give it a punt. Gurren Lagan - This was actually pretty good once I managed to get past the utterly dreary female characters all running around in Bikinis. The 'previously on' sections were really entertaining due to the way that main characters would talk you through it and the interlude art was great. It won me over until about halfway through the first season where somethign happens that sucked the life out of the show and then they introduced an extremely annoying female character and I couldn't finish Kill La Kill - Utterly dreadful. I was really enjoying the animation and humour of the first episode and then the character got her costume and I bounced off of it so hard that I didn't finish the third episode. It was a shame as it looked likeit could have been really cool but that costume and the explanation for why it had to be like that just made me gag. They openly acknowledge that it is fanservicey but stil go with it, gross. Sword Art Online - Really strong start (online MMO where people are trapped in it until they finish the game) but imploded after 4 episodes and only got worse after that. Annoyingly perfect main character, predictable secondary characters (guy shows up looks a bit dodgy - surprise he is the bad guy for the episode), and it has scant regard for any of its female characters (Asuna is supposed to be this badass leader of a raiding team but needs guys to do everything for her, including making any decision). I made it to episode 17 and quit. Attack on Titan - Probably the best of the bunch, mainly because it takes on a fairly scary premise and tries to do it justice (casually grinning giants that eat people) and has some great animation in it (the characters use these jet propelled suits to attack the titans and looks pretty rad). The problem is that every character is a cookie cut stereotype (angry protagonist with an inner power! Quiet female sidekick who is cool but holds an inner secret! Cowardly/brave sidekick who rises to the occasion!) and there are at three filler episodes in the season that could have been summarised in about 30 seconds. I finished that season but will not bother the second. In short, anime seems to be a bit shite.
  4. Intoxicated:

I currently have a r. Got drunk on Jim Beam and Ginger Ale last night (my favourite combination outside of Tuaca and Ginger Beer) and tried to play GTA V. My girlfriend came home to find me in a very foul mood. I spoke to her this morning, sh esaid that seeing GTA onscreen was like a trigger for a bunch of really bad memories - basically everyone she has known who was really into the game ended up being a douchebag.
  5. Is It Wrong To Eat Meat?

You really should read Conspiracy against the human race, I reckon you would have fun with it. I am a vegetarian because I can't stand the taste of meat. Ethical and Moral debates are pretty much non-existant for me but I do think that there are ethical concerns to be had when it comes to the way that we, as a race, are hastening our own demise.
  6. Titanfall

Architecture, we don't agree on much, but in this one case I am with you on this. Titanfall is easily my most played game of 2014. The fracturing of the user base was a total shame but the rest of the support has been stellar.
  7. Titanfall

Ah right, I am playing on Xbox One and there are players there but not as many as I would have hoped. You all seem to be playing on PC though, so I can't really add much more to that. In the newest update they have added so much brain crack in there that I can feel my brain rotting.
  8. Is Social Media Eroding Our Humanity?

I tried to look at it like that but when all I was seeing from them was these posts about UKIP/Britain First or Pro-Gamergate over 4 months I just started to realise it wasn't worth it. Likewise, there was one guy that really enjoyed arguing with me about stuff. I also did, at first, but then when I would post a comment on someone else's facebook he would jump in and start messaging me private messages in duality and I realised that it was getting to the point that this was his personality - latch on to a dissenting voice and then bury them. I can believe that this is/was part of their personality before that blossoms online but when my only interactions are now online it makes it depressing that this seems to be the thing they have focused on.
  9. Titanfall

Is this all PC focused? I was hoping to play some Co-Op. And yes, the way the DLC has been handled means that the player base has been ripped asunder.
  10. Is Social Media Eroding Our Humanity?

I dropped out of Twitter due to gamergate and gamergate discussion and have been leaning really heavily on this forum for information and links that I would normally go to Twitter for. So far, I think I have been doing okay and I don't think I will return to Twitter. I almost dropped out of Facebook at the same time because of gamergate. It was actually more painful there because it was people I knew (friends, co-workers, even some family) that were parroting this stuff and it was a horrible shock to realise that they had actually always been that way but I had ignored the signs or chosen not to acknowledge them when we had been in close proximity to each other. I eventually caved when I realised that it was one of my main ways that I communicated with a lot of people (I don't own a phone) that I only saw 3-4 times a year and it is how my parents stay in touch with me. So Facebook, after a lot of blocking and unfollowing, stayed. As for eroding our humanity? Seeing some people in that extremely harsh light was pretty heart breaking.
  11. THE EVIL WITHIN: Slurms MacKenzie

I loved that chapter. The key to beating that area is timing, each area off of the main atrium can be completed before that enemy spawns, at which time you should return to the atrium to with the two staircases and lead him on a chase in a circle, done right he will never warp in front of you and will eventually disappear. Once you figure that out - there is a lot of tension involved as you realise you need to be hurry between each point as quickly as possible and always make sure you have the relatively safe atrium within running distance. As for changing up the ruleset - that is one of the things I enjoyed about the game and I felt that it fed into the theme and erraticness, but that was just me.

My review finally came out: http://www.arcadianrhythms.com/2014/12/review-the-evil-within/
  13. Feminism

Yeah, sorry, should have put charming in italics. I found the video utterly hilarious but for all the wrong reasons
  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think that my problem with that comic is that it is easy to misunderstand (as I did so initially). I actually thought that this was a dig at Social Justice Warriors in that some one could say they couldn't stand SJWs and then one shows up and asks them to justify that and as a result proves what a pain in the arse they are. At first I was a little offended by it as I felt that this exemplified some discussions I had on facebook. In a way that was useful because it did then make me examine my habits in certain discussions and look at when I might need to back off.
  15. Feminism

I fell down a rabbit hole looking up Georgina Young and her writing (she claims to be a neutral feminist that leans towards to support for gamergate) and I came across this charming little video: The crux is that the lense that Sarkeesian views Peach and Zelda is framed within the context that people of action are the only way to be and that strength is not perceived in people who are able to persevere through persecution and oppression. It goes on a few other tangents too and for me it is one of those ones where if I squint and turn my head sideways I can sort of see what they are trying to say...
  16. Life

So Lizard Squad brought Xbox Live and PSN to a screeching halt over Christmas (which really sucked as I was hoping to show my parents Brooklyn Nine-Nine) but to cheer me up and amuse me, my best friend pointed out that the Nintendo eShop was still going strong. We started laughing about how much things have changed - poor Nintendo.
  17. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I wrote to Warhorse studios and they very politely replied: I am sorry to hear that. Thank you for your clarification and for beeing with us. It means a lot. Best luck to you and enjoy the Christmas! Dezember 2014 22:30 An: info Betreff: Daniel Vavra's support for Gamergate Hello, After seeing your announcement for Kingdom Come: Deliverance I was really excited, especially after seeing the caliber of the people working on it (Operation Flashpoint, Mafia and Arma are amazing). I was also heartened to see that Daniel Vavra had gone out of his way to campaign for the liberation of the developers arrested while working on Arma 3. However, I was disappointed to find out that Daniel Vavra is a supporter of the Gamergate hashtag and movement. As much as I am a fan of the work that you have produced and a supporter of Daniel's previous campaign, I find that aligning with a group such as GG makes it impossible for me to support you in good conscience. I really hope that everything works out for you and I am sorry that I cannot throw in my lot with your project. Good Luck.
  18. Saints Row 4

Really? The entire vibe I got from them is that they have no moral compass whatsoever. They have no qualms aligning themselves with pimps, murderers, whoever, just to be able to follow their own self serving goals. Their posse treats them like a lovable rogue but the game seems to always be giving a sideways glance at you going 'this person is mental'. The fact that a mutant behemoth Russian, who is a cold-blooded killer, happens to be the most likable character in Saints Row The Third was enough of an indication of that.

I am in teh same boat as Tanu. I have had a copy of 'Of Orcs and Men' lying around for a while but couldn't get past the first 30 minutes. Styx is a way different beast, but because of the way that Styx resolves itself, I kind of want to get into 'Of Orcs' to see what Cyanide were trying to do.
  20. The Wolf Among Us

I finished last night after marathoning through 4 episodes in a weekend. I will never play another Telltale series like that again, the reason being that a lot of the things being brought up in this thread did not resonate with me at all but I think that had more to do with the fact that I was blundering through each scene and not really giving any pause for thought. Worse, I think that some of the quieter moments were completely lost on me because I was churning through it and just found them outright boring (I dozed off in Episode 3). Which, I think was just me consuming it in the incorrect way. Anyway, overall, I enjoyed it - I thought there were some really poor choices in terms of achievements (these games should never encourage repalying through them as I feel it ruins some of the 'magic') - but I still think that Walking Dead is stronger.
  21. THE EVIL WITHIN: Slurms MacKenzie

Yeah - you are better off playing it on consoles, all the nightmare things you talked about just won't happen on Xbox One. It is definitely my game of the year with EDF and Dark Souls in close second
  22. I am starting to enjoy the fact that things seem to be focusing on digital releases in this generation of consoles. It means that I login this morning and all of a sudden Divekick is available. Alongside that, is a pseudo-sequel to 'Of Orcs and Men' - Styx: Master of Shadows. A game that is £23:99 and has a name a bit like Shadow of Mordor. Anyway it looks quite pretty in screenshots but it is made by Cyanide (a company that almost managed to fuck up Bloodbowl) so it is most likely going to be terrible. This does not stop me from wanting to buy it (I played Ride to Hell: Retribution from beginning to end). Oh, and for reference - The Asylum are responsible for churning out films that sound like other films to con people into buying them (Snakes on a Train, Transmorphers, Atlantic Rim). This is the Bone site post: https://store.xbox.com/en-GB/Xbox-One/Games/Styx-Master-of-Shadows/10e11b31-9367-427f-9191-68fbcd793424
  23. Saints Row 4

I have to disagree, I found the main character to be a complete sociopath. It was just the whole world was now also insane so their actions end up looking in place with the insane world.
  24. So, I finished Styx over last weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It gets very cheeky at about the halfway point by making you retrace your steps through the same levels. It gets away with it due to the enemy types and routes you are forced to take will normally have you looking at the enormous levels in a very different way. The story line ended up being the surprise of the whole thing (go read my spoiler earlier on if you want to know) and it pays out in a way that is satisfying (hint: no one is happy by the end). I am actually really keen to dig up my copy of 'Of Orcs and Men' as this game is a prequel to it and see what is going on there. I know I started off very down on this game but I stand wholly corrected - this game is perfect at the 20-30 pound mark and gave me a great deal more enjoyment than some of the bigger titles out there (Shadow of Mordor).
  25. Recently completed video games

Finished Legend of Korra. It is definitely Platinum's worst game but it isn't that bad. Anyway - not a fan of the show but it was a diverting game for an afternoon.
