  1. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Man, BADBADNOTGOOD has done so much awesome stuff lately...
  2. Video Games and Schools

I'm a middle school math/science teacher up here in Canada myself, and while I've never used PLAYING games as a teaching vehicle, one of my favourite projects ever was for a unit on wetland animal life cycles in which I had the kids create games in TWINE that had players live out their chosen creature's life. It was incredibly engaging for them, and as the tool is free and very easy to use, almost everyone was able to put something together. Results were mixed on the actual final product, but for a group of fifth graders, what they did was pretty awesome. I put them up here: gradeschoolif.weebly.com I'm sure that, as an English teacher with older kids than I have, you'd be able to do some pretty astounding creative writing works with a few of them. Incidentally, I'm currently re-working the same project to do with a fresh batch of kids in a few weeks time (hopefully with a bit better results. The difference in my planning ability between being in the second year of my career then and the fourth year now is pretty big), and will be posting what the kids do in the game development forum for interested parties to see what ten year olds do with interactive fiction. I'm sure the kids would love getting feedback from real players when the time comes. Just throwing that out there...
  3. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

That album is so good. I use it for running and it's awesome for keeping pace.
  4. Movie/TV recommendations

I hear it's the Citizen Kane of Raid-a-likes.
  5. I've been watching the Shenmue ER as well. I was iffy on it until Episode 6, when Vinny lost it trying to remember "Fireball". God damn I was in tears laughing at that.
  6. anime

It's kind of glorious. I also love that it's subtitled with the lyrics, even though said lyrics are just "pikachu pikachu pi ka chu!"
  7. Spore

Whups. When I posted this the first time, I just searched and brought up a thread in which Spore was discussed. Turns out this was in the Networking section. My bad. Without further ado; Just got it last night. I'm Miffy495, of course. I'm on the tribe stage now, quite happy with my creatures and trying to adapt myself to the ultra-simple RTS mechanics. I actually thought the creature stage was pretty cool. I was primarily a carnivore and made about 7 species extinct before I decided to make some friends. I went up to these giant gorilla looking things and started befriending them when I huge dinosaur-ish whatchamacallit came out of nowhere and started eating them and attacking me. I legged it the hell out of there and made some different friends. Once I could have a party of myself and three others, it was really cool to take a group of incredibly varied creatures on a hunt with me. I ended up befriending about 8 species and then using them to hunt down and kill everything else on the map. Good times. Oh, and so far the defining moment was when I was a simple little creature out trying to befriend a group of carnivorous bunnies and a flying saucer from someone else's game that looked a lot like the Starship Enterprise came in and abducted them all before I could make nice. Damn you, Kirk!
  8. Life

Another school year begins, and my first as a specialist instead of a generalist. It was a good week, met both classes I'll be teaching, and had one heartwarming moment with a little girl who only speaks French in a very English school. She was in tears over her Math "what do you remember from Grade 4" pre-test because she couldn't understand some of the questions, so I crouched down next to her and started explaining everything in French. None of the other grade 5 teachers speak it, and I don't think she realized I did until I started doing so with her. She figured out everything she needed to and was beaming by the end of it. Has spent the last 2 days following me around in the halls chatting about whatever comes into her head because she knows that I will understand her and she seems like she's been kinda starved for someone to talk to. Super cute. I think I made a buddy.
  9. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

The last level of SUPERHOT actually does some interesting things with the formula. It's very short, so I would consider giving it another shot.
  10. Films of Nicolas Winding Refn

I saw it too, and feel like you're just hedging your criticisms here. Neon Demon is just kinda bad, you don't need to justify that much further. The Bronson is really good, but everything Refn has done after has been progressively up its own ass with each new film.
  11. ketchup on pizza

Do you put ketchup on fries? Why is it so different? ...They're totally delicious.
  12. ketchup on pizza

It occurs to me that this is not a normal thing outside of Canada, but if you live here it's a staple of pretty much every picnic/birthday party/barbecue.
  13. ketchup on pizza

Maybe ketchup on mac is a Canadian thing? I grew up on it, and still will put either ketchup or hot sauce on mac any time I eat it.
  14. Solitaire: The Lonely Hearts Club

Pocket Card Jockey may secretly be my game of 2016. I bought it in May and have been playing it pretty much daily since. It's so damn good.
  15. ketchup on pizza

A street name for cocaine that makes you more polite.
  16. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

    ...and it's TERRIBLE.
  17. ...what if he's doing the RV trip with Johnny V? With Adam Boyes just being announced as the new CEO of Iron Galaxy, Dave Lang may be able to spare some road trip time. I don't think it's actually going to happen, BUT WHAT IF IT HAPPENED?
  18. ketchup on pizza

Is Canadian flour a thing in Korea? As a Canadian, I don't really think much about our flour or its pan-global appeal...
  19. So what the hell did they just announce at the end of UPF this week (I just caught up)? Has anyone heard rumours about what Dan may be doing?
  20. Recently completed video games

I think I'm done The Witness? At least, I'm done the main game. I'll be ducking back in to wrap up the 90-ish puzzles that I did not do and spend some more time looking around the environment. Don't think I'll ever get a second +, having looked into how you get them. I'm at 456 +56 now, and I think I'm mostly satisfied with what I've done. That was a fucking GAME.
  21. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

So I bought this on the last Steam sale and just started it today. I would have kicked it off right at the start of summer, but I wanted to give my brain a break by playing through Doom first. I'm about 2 hours in now and have activated 2 lasers and found 5 +s. Holy everloving fuck this game is great. I successfully avoided spoilers to this point, so am going in green. I have finished I have the Giant Bomb "We Play The Witness With Jonathan Blow" video downloaded to my tablet for when I get to whatever I consider my "end" point, an am very excited to eventually hear what he has to say about all of this. This game is phenomenal. I'm sorry that I waited six months to play it, but also very glad that I held off on starting until I was on vacation so I have loads of time to obsess over it. I ordered a 1070 a few days ago, and it's weird to think that the game I use to break it in is going to be this super sedate puzzle game, but here we are.
  22. The Big VR Thread

Yeah, I have next to no interest in VR, but that video made me really want to play around in Sound Stage.
  23. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THAT BADBADNOTGOOD AND GHOSTFACE KILLAH MADE AN ALBUM TOGETHER?!?!?!?
  24. So bummed about Austin leaving, but like everyone else, I get it. I hope they can hire someone equally high-quality. He brought an incredibly unique voice to an otherwise (as much as I love them) fairly uniform perspective on that site. Good on him for getting to run his own thing, but damn it.
