"The Swindle" from Size Five Games for PC and consoles
Ben X replied to Ben X's topic in Video Gaming
Yeah, this is totally it. I was also taken aback by the amount of people who demand to be able to 100% everything ever, even when the game is explicitly designed not to let you do that.- 103 replies

Yes, the emotional spikes of releasing a game certainly are tough.- 103 replies

It started off really well, loads of good feedback. But then he got a couple of poor (and imo wrongheaded) reviews that knocked the Metacritic score pretty heavily (which unfortunately is a big deal and taken at face value by a lot of the industry/customer base despite being utterly flawed), so he's a little less optimistic right now. I'm hoping MC will add some more positive scores in soon (and maybe interpret some non-scored reviews like the Eurogamer one into a percentage - do they do that?) and the XBox launch will give it another boost. Also, of course, all the upcoming Idle Thumbs mentions and streams will help!- 103 replies

WELL?! So it turns out I don't think I've actually ever watched Homer Goes To College before. To quote the episode, "why does it have to be zany?" Pretty directionless collection of wacky gags and Homer being more oafish than usual. I quite liked the nerds with their nose bleeds and ear medicine and the bit with the car prank was good, but not much else clicked. The best bits were the School Of Hard Knockers and the credit stills from imaginary Animal House style scenes. The Bobo and Treehouse 4 eps were much better than I remembered though!

Interesting. This is how I remembered it, but there was some disagreement on page 1 of this thread. I'll be getting to it soon, so I'll be able to reappraise. Btw, you never answered: do you have a link to those Brad Bird style guides you mentioned ages ago?

Heyyy, did you edit that second half in after I'd posted? (Not that it changes the context of my reply, just wondering.)

See, I think if it had shown him getting whacked by the third rake in the wide shot, then cutting to Homer and Marge where we hear him step into another one offscreen, that aspect of it would have come through a lot clearer for me and I probably would have enjoyed it. I think what bugs me is that we see him going back to the same rake at least three times at which point it just doesn't make sense to me, it becomes almost too Beckett-esque for me to find funny. (I should clarify that I'm thinking through why it doesn't work for me, not saying it's objectively bad or anything).

I know it's a fan favourite, but that gag never tickled me - for me, it never came out of the other side from boring back to funny. I did like the callback to it later in the episode when he gets on the boat and steps on another rake, though.

I've just got onto season 5 and it's around here that episodes I don't enjoy start to show up. That snake beating one at the end of S4 and the season opener about the Be Sharps are pretty ropey, with awkward cameos (although Barry White's return in the next episode almost makes it worth it) and goofy plots. Just because right at the end of the latter they lampshade the fact that it's just taking random characters and crowbarring them into a genre parody doesn't fix that issue. I enjoyed Cape Feare more than I remembered, but it's still basically an episode-long parody of a single film with a bunch of silly jokes and perfunctory plot stringing them together. It's not like it's season 10 or anything - they can still do wacky episodes like the monorail one while keeping it focused and sharp - but you can see the beginnings of the saggy, lazy show it eventually became.

Yeah, I was unfamiliar with "ghetto rigged" too. Seems like the "ghetto jump" phrase doesn't have connotations of poor quality or cheapness, though, as it's simply a way of extending your reach. So it's a weird choice of term...

Apparently it's a specifically Metroid-related term for that technique of looking down before you jump off a ledge to reach further areas than usual? I couldn't find an explanation for why it's called that, but it seems like it's a community-wide thing rather than just those streamers. Do you find it offensive purely for the trivialisation of the word ghetto? I was expecting to find out they were making "black people jump like this" jokes...

As far as I'm aware, the buttons are customisable. They are on PC with an XBox controller, anyway. Also, it's not out on XBox until the 31st, then WiiU shortly after. Zerofiftyone, don't know if this makes any difference to your decision but it's cross-buy on Playstation across Vita, PS4 and PS3. Launch trailer:- 103 replies

This is out on PC and PS in the next 8 hours or so, I think it'll be £12/$15, with a 15% discount on launch. Recommended from Eurogamer 8/10 from thesixthaxis 8/10 from PC Gamer (reminder: I did not work on this, just did some unpaid beta testing)- 103 replies

The thread for The Swindle (made by Dan Marshall, whom I co-wrote BTDT/TGP with, to clarify things) is here. The game comes out tomorrow for PC, PS4 and Vita, then on the 31st for XBox then shortly after for WiiU. It's reeeeally good! I think it's £12 with a 15% discount on launch, which is terribly good value. Reviews are trickling in, and I think Eurogamer gave it an 8/10.

Cuckolding fetishists. Actually, i just realised, I was placing "conservative" as opposite to Republican in my head because of the Conservative Party over here, so that's one less problem with it. I still think the link between being cheated on by your partner with another man, and race traitors/grassroots Republicans who worked for Republicans in good faith, but get only scorn and contempt is a big stretch. Also, I've never heard of the other men being "often African-Americans"; if I remember my Shakespeare correctly, fricking Othello complained about getting cucked.

Sure, it makes sense that they would come up with it, but the term itself makes no sense.
-
That term makes zero fucking sense.

Yeah, at least that is helpful feedback that you can work on. I always have to force myself to smile, make eye contact with each interviewer, and not let my voice settle into a monotone. You really have to act like you're trying to be a good talk show guest.

Yeah, that's a good point - it's the seeing of the making that reveals them to be mechanically produced and full of eyelids and arseholes. Whereas people now use it to refer to seeing the creative ways in which good things are made.

No you're not! Well played SBM, but I'm not falling for it.

DooMTM's 2nd episode is starting to introduce teleporters (scary for someone who gets lost so easily) and a few new baddy types, which is good. I think one thing an FPS should do is introduce new baddies on a regular basis. The only thing I feel a little disappointment with HL2 for (to get ahead of myself chronologically) is the relative lack of enemy variety, especially compared to the first HL - different types of head-crabs, different types of zombies, different types of Combine - which makes it feels like nothing really new gets rolled out after the first hour or so (even though there's so much variety in the level, mechanics and encounter design to make up for it).

The final Broken Age doc ep spurred me to post this: people now use "see how the sausage is made" in a positive or neutral way. I'm pretty sure it used to be used in a negative way - ie, see how bland and repetitive products with all kinds of crap in them are made. Now it's like people are talking about artisanal sausages or something.
