We need an "ALERT DRUNK POST" smiley.

Well, what I meant was "didn't we all list our suggestions for which comics are good as introductory texts to the medium already on these forums?" But yeah, absolutely, it's a very broad question. When I try to decide which graphic novel to introduce someone to the medium with, I deal with it on a case by case basis, consider their preferences and experience with other mediums (do they like wordy plays, bombastic action flicks, mood poems?) and cater to that. But something like Watchmen specifically plays to the characteristics and history of the medium, not just the cliches of the superhero genre, and I really think that one would benefit from a little reading experience in that medium before tackling that text. I'd liken it to recommending Tristram Shandy as someone's first novel or Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind as someone's first film. Not that those texts are impenetrable, but that it absolutely helps to know which conventions they are playing against, adhering to and commenting on.

Nappi, please report back to us on how you find Watchmen, because as has been said it's definitely not a My First Comic Book choice so it'll be interesting to see how well it works in that situation. We all suggested some introductory texts previously, right?

Wii Tennis almost made it worth the buying price on its own. I just feel sorry for Nintendo that Sony and M$ immediately jumped on the bandwagon and steered it more expertly.

I think I read once that the Babylon 5 effects were all done on Amigas.
-
I always enjoy those! I also particularly like the shots through a surface that isn't actually clear, like a whiteboard or marble counter, that sometimes are subtle enough to not be immediately recognisable as such.

Are we just going to ignore the fact that Orv likes the Enterprise theme tune?!
-
Enterprise seemed like it did some interesting plot arc stuff later on, but I couldn't get over the theme tune and the early scene where two characters had to strip down to their underwear and rub each other with space-lube for science reasons. I enjoyed the reference to Archer's beagle in the Star Trek reboot.

Much better, thanks Rodi! See you again in a couple of months!
-
Aw, no reaction from Rodi? I've been waiting for weeks to annoy him with this!
-
Just posting to say I think this is definitely a good idea.

What's the deal with it? They've got a version of Steam for Linux now, but, unless there's a Linux-compatible version of a game, that doesn't really help much? I tried getting BTDT installed on a mate's Linux via Steam, using Crossover or something along those lines, and it was a pain in the tits.

I'm afraid it's already time for my bi-annual plugfest again. *ahem* Part-time Idle Thumbs forumite, and my best mate, Dan Marshall has launched Zombie Cow Studios Size Five Games. He has a few games for download, including 'Ben There, Dan That!', an adventure game written by me and Dan. It's a tribute to the classic Lucasarts adventures, and is now available as a Special Edition on a "pay what you want" pricing scheme. [EDIT: you're probably best off buying it in a bundle with the sequel these days] Please pass it on to anyone who you think might enjoy it, and direct any questions or requests for exclusive site content (interviews, etc) to dan@sizefivegames.com, and we'll be more than happy to help. Thanks everyone, and see you in two years for the next plugarama!

Oof, a tough watch. Tim's message is definitely worth reading after the vid, though, it clarifies a couple of important things.

Well done, Subbes! Mirror's Edge installed fine! Did I imagine the problems with online-confirmed one-time installs? Also, Doom3 works fine on my new PC (still Windows 7), but I have to dick around with autoexec.bat files to sort the resolution out. It's like being in the 90s!

Actually, that was me. Sorry.

It wasn't a question?

I think Thunderpeel said it was his favourite film ever.

We haven't even mastered letter-writing yet, why the hell are we attempting telephonic conversations?!

Juxtaposed with that fox, it gives the impression the panda is stuffed and animatronicised.

Thanks, castorp, can't believe you remembered!
