Actually, it goes deeper than just perception; there's biology to back that up too. As we get older, our brain becomes slower (liken it to going down in processor speed). As a result, the world around us and life itself seem to go faster. Less clock cycles per day = seemingly shorter days. The relativity of time is further pointed out by how our brains can increase in speed under high duress. There was an amazing experiment centering around a blinking digital watch. The watch showed the time in minute fractions of a second, way too fast for the normal brain to process. Then, they strapped it onto a guy's wrist and threw him off a building (onto a trampoline ofc). During the fall, the adrenaline increased his brain speed so highly that he could read the time on the watch and tell it when he came off the trampoline. Pretty amazing.

That child has reached a level of ecstasy that few humans ever achieve.

That's something I can stand behind. Farscape is an amazing sci-fi show. Four great seasons plus a generally OK miniseries!

A beautiful and inspiring tale, Sententia. Wonderful to hear you figuring it out and taking steps towards a life you think is worthwhile. For what it's worth, I wouldn't consider the time you spent not plowing your way through the organs of society, but rather learning all sorts of probably useful and interesting things wasted time. That has probably done more for you than any formal education would, if only to allow you the time to mature and find out who you are. Bold steps, congrats!

Besides the obvious ones that ElMuerte mentioned, I have two specific additions. Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors, which is highly influenced by Star Wars, but has some great, goofy ideas of its own. Yes, it has plant monsters morphing into cars, but that's besides the point. There's a rollicking sci-fi vibe to it that I really love, even now. Mentioned before here, recently, Ulysses 31. I'm watching it for the first time and though it's less good than Jayce, it's hair-metal guitar-slaying, hippie space Jesus and his tragic adventure to get home against the will of the gods.

You know what? Yeah, I wouldn't mind dating a gamer. I think I could cope with the incessant choosing between me and World of Warcraft.

Moving will make you reconsider your belongings. After moving multiple times, I've adopted a healthy attitude of not wanting to own anything superfluous. It's totally a personal choice. I know people who are real collectors, they collect everything. I'm pretty much the opposite, currently giving away vast swathes of belongings I've had for years. The less I own, the more collected and clean I feel, somehow.

Sam Jackson and the line "does he come in black?" say all we need to know: this film is actually like the fake commercials in the original Robocop. Violence porn without even the postmodern hardcore edge, as opposed to the gross, oblique mirror the original was. Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins is probably my favorite movie of him. It's fantastic and like you say, a slow burn. You don't notice it during the film, but once it ends you realize you've just seen something amazing. Great performances and build-up, and fun dialogues. It's schlocky and sincere at the same time.

This one weird trick for dating a gamer

Well, Idle Thumbs is still around, even after the 2008 anti-Chris Remo purge and the 2011 clearing of the Against Jake Rodkin Foundation.

Tegan, I watched the Ace Attorney film two weeks ago and came to pretty much the opposite conclusion. It's a faithful - extremely faithful - translation of the game, yes, but exactly because of that it falls flat on its face as a movie. I wasn't excited by anything in there, where Phoenix Wright games usually have me jumping on my seat with energy and enthusiasm. This plot and structure doesn't work in a film, and it took me somewhat by surprise. I went into this with a very sympathetic heart. It felt... strangely heartless and by the numbers, for such a distinct world and such colorful characters. It feels like Takashi Miike did this one on auto-pilot, and the actors don't carry their weight either. No, if you want a good adaptation, watch the recent Rurouni Kenshin film. Amazing, that one.

Hey, I'm just waiting for Toblix to come around and do his weird zoom-in magic again, creeping everybody out.

This one came out surprisingly well. Especially for a selfie!

OK, two things that I just discovered. 1. By Jove, there were a ton of Psychonauts topics back in the day! Nowadays a game is lucky to get a single one, Psychonauts got dozens. Do a quick search and you'll be amazed at such gems as "Psychonauts online?" and "Why didn't Psychonauts sell well?". Also; a surprising outpouring of love for Ed Fries. 2. For all the topics present, there was no the Psychonauts topic for me to explain the following in, so I had to make the definitive one myself. The more time passes, the more I realize that Psychonauts is probably the best game ever made. Nothing compares. It used to be Morrowind was my go-to favorite, but Psychonauts has taken the throne much like how Vertigo ousted Citizen Kane in the Sights & Sounds list last week. Its quirky perfection ages incredibly well. I've often remarked this, it really gets better ever time you play it. And I believe I also recently professed to being singularly impressed with its ending, a rare treat across any medium. Just thinking about it makes me want to play it again. The whole thing is a perfect storm of the best possible choices made and the most scrumptious ideas.

General Custer with a stick of dynamite... The damage he could do with that.

FLOEP! Because screw English onomatopoeia when there are perfectly fine Dutch alternatives! Your Feraligatr is amazing. Sort of wistfully looking upwards... I go nuts just looking at the highlights of the individual scales and thinking how long that must've taken.

This thread is getting me dowwwwwwn. What a bummer. I know it happens. I can kind of in a small way relate, since I've been called names and laughed at and been pointed at on the street as well. Also been hit. It's no fun at all. Luckily, I live in really relaxed, friendly parts nowadays, where that sort of thing doesn't happen at all.

New comic up. Yeah, I'll just put them here from now on, seeing as this topic exists! It's about Star Fox.

Aww, Twig, here's a virtual hug, man.

It's not a stretch. The exit point earlier was that Gabe was genuinely sorry for what he had said and expressed an attempt to broader understand the problems of women and LBGT people. Saying this comes across as "I regret this happening, because if it hadn't, I wouldn't have had to make an apology and grow my understanding". That's not far from a complete switch on his earlier apology.
-
Sorry to hear that, Shammack. Take it easy. I don't know if you can locate the source of your mopiness, and possibly make it better? Otherwise, it's OK to be a little mopey now and again. That's perfectly fine and normal as long as it doesn't drag you down too much. Life is a bumpy ride!

So, apparently on Pax, Gabe retracted his earlier remorse and diplomacy regarding Dickwolves. I don't know how to link Twitter messages but a lot of people exploded on this. At this point, Penny Arcade has turned into an incorrigable bastion of exclusionary, misogynist bullying, hailing from a bygone age and not just passively annoying, but actively harmful to gamer culture. Penny Arcade has to stop.

I'm going to pull a gross move and plug the little review of Star Trek Into Darkness that I wrote after seeing it: http://www.filmadeus.com/2013/06/star-trek-into-darkness-jj-abrams-2013.html. It echoes much of the sentiment of this topic because even without the weird plot holes and gratuitous female objectification, it just wasn't a very good movie. Bonus material: scroll down to see a custom reply to the review by Ronimo's Joost van Dongen! That's real star power, you can't buy that.
