BUSINESS PROPOSAL: Need a US-based game studio to partner up with on a tower defense game for the US Army
Roderick replied to MrHoatzin's topic in Video Gaming
MrHoatzin is now officially part of the military industrial complex. -
I was in Amsterdam today so I visited the local Waterstones and picked up Cloud Atlas. The first few pages were great, I laughed out loud on the very first page. It's a weird start coming from Jacob de Zoet; Mitchell is clearly trying out more things stylistically and sometimes losing himself in obscurantism. I'm not far yet, but I don't think it crosses the line all too much. It's a bit harder to read, but I am very much enjoying it so far.

You mean when the artillery appears? I fail to recall what exactly is the correct way of dealing with them, but I know it's more like a puzzle than an action moment: there's a power that easily dispatches them. Just gotta figure out which one.

Conan's rating system is the best rating system.

Well, you know the drill. Make a journal topic on these very forums rife with pictures, video and audio. Arrrhem. Good luck, is what I meant to say. I hope it works out.

Oh man, haha, we totally had the same idea. While I watched I was thinking: this is the Silent Hill of the 60s; characters trapped in an endless, personal hell.

What they should do is the following. Remake the Ascendancy soundtrack. That was the perfect, absolutely perfect space exploration music.

I just saw Last Year at Marienbad from Alain Resnais in 1961. What an unnerving film. I think I didn't enjoy it while I watched it (how ironic considering the movie's theme), but now that I'm gathering my thoughts I appreciate it more and more. Has anyone else seen this? I'd love to hear some insights. (If only we had a film podcast as well.) (By Vivec, I wish this film had a different soundtrack than continuous, dissonant organ music. It's effective but heinous.)

Youmeyou, you are killing me. I have been dying to replay AC2: Brotherhood, but my 360's still busted. Argh, this isn't helping! I also want to poison people and throw money on the ground.

I had to switch off the music and put on something from my own collection just to be able to play this without getting that music stuck

Ah, ahhhhh, I'm just not seeing it this time. You're making me whip out my Photoshop, what a pain.

My question is how the hell did Marek BM Bronstring get that fabulous tan?!

Fresh Kickstarter Compendium Extraordinaire
Roderick replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in Idle Banter
I think it's a good idea, that way we won't get a topic for every Kickstarter out there. Really special ones like Planetary Annihilation can still get their own, but I doubt Wings would need one. I am also very, very much anticipating the moment Kickstarter integrates Paypal into its system and makes donating for credit card-less people much less of a hassle. -
Apparently it was a hot mess at Blizzard! Fun to read about the nuts and bolts of that game. I wonder how they're doing currently. They are, after all, still in the business of designing a game three times over before shipping it.

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
Roderick replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Tribunal has some pretty tough fights. I remember one where you need to kill some old guard of Almalexia's or something. It's worth persevering (or cheating your way through on PC) for the crazy ending this expension has, and then playing Bloodmoon if you haven't already. Bloodmoon is a definite high point, they're trying out some sweet new things (for the time). -
Galactic War sounds sweet!

Do it and then distribute the profits among yourself and fellow Thumbs. That will make eeeeeeeverything better and all right.

Yeah, that was hardly my shining moment of the year and I am sorry about it. I forgot to dial it back. Armchair, you are zwaar de gekste.

Idle Thumbs 72: Crazy Crane's Deceit
Roderick replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I'm less harsh on Kotaku than most of you, it seems. As low-hanging fruit I browse through it a little every day and I like the emphasis on small/irrelevant/peculiar/Japanese trivia. Partly I do also use it as a flagging system to inform me when something is happening, but I also like it for what it is: just a weird info site that is generally really really quick with the scoops. I never read comments anywhere, so I'm not concerned about them. -
The Idle Book Club 1: The Sense of an Ending
Roderick replied to Chris's topic in Idle Book Club Episodes
I read about something called 'emotobooks', which are light novels for digital delivery enhanced with abstract splash pages featuring psychedelic colors to set the reader in the right mood. So, that's a thing. Whenever I read in public, I always envision getting caught up in interesting conversations, but that never happens. -
Oh man, I regret everything. Anyway, yes, it's totally bullshit to pronounce the Dutch 'accessoires' with a soft s, just as you wouldn't use a soft s for 'accijns' or 'accent'. But everyone says it that way now because of whatever reason (I blame toy commercials, which are really the only time you encounter the word), but what the hell. It's just a funny bit of conversation, not meant to rile people up

Do I see PHAEDRUS on those containers? Classy posters!

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
Roderick replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
I rarely quit games deliberately, but I forget about them before finishing all the time. Games I more or less consciously stopped playing, hmmm... Majora's Mask I loved but got stuck on (the fish bosh, I've complained about it before), System Shock 2 because I got too unnerved by the respawns, Final Fantasy 7 because after 40 hours I realized it wasn't going to suddenly become brilliant after all, Napoleon: Total War, no more time for it.
