A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
BigJKO replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
Yesterday's Enterprise, besides being some good ol' time-travellin' sci-fi also retroactively gave Tasha Yar a good reason to die instead of the pretty awful "Poop! She's dead!" of the Evil Goo episode. Except! SPOILERS for Redemption S3/4. -
I've seen that linked many times on twitter. I don't know.. it just looks like shit to me. Unwatchable shit. I know that's the whole point.. but it just feels like instead of parodying the awful 80s shit it just is.. shit. I did really like the Viking appearing in the lake, though. That looked well-made, but thoroughly ridiculous, which felt like a much better homage to wacky 80s stuff than the rest of the trailer..

Wow, what are the odds that three of those tracks turned out to be from Gibbage?! Amazing!

Year Walk: Not Game, Really. Nah, it's a game (and apparently too hard for you, Mington ) and it's nice and short. The puzzles aren't great but the atmosphere is. Device 6 is more interesting, though.

Man, that look in Dave's eyes when Tim tells him he has to redo the entire Marek cutscene in the latest episode.. Heart-breaking. I've been on Dave's side I this kind of situation many times and it's always a pain.. Can't imagine it's any less painful for the director/creator. It also doesn't feel like much is being spoiled, so far.. I don't know where that big orchestra piece is going to be, but art-wise we've seen progressions of the same few places a lot of the time.

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes

Yes, all the episodes He recommended are stellar. I'm really liking TNG a lot now that I'm well into the third season. -
Well, it doesn't directly reference them but it is pretty much a parody/homage of Invasion of the Body Snatchers or The Stepford Wives. Edgar Wright mentions them frequently as inspiration. For me it's a sci-fi homage, rather than a disaster movie homage.

A Question of Game Design: Associating Sounds with the Passage of Time
BigJKO replied to Rxanadu's topic in Idle Banter
Waluigi approved. -
I wonder if Chris, as you woke up you accidentally opened up Device 6, which has some inter-level meta games one of which acts as if it's scanning your face. Maybe it ended with a 'Data Complete' prompt.

Solidifying their position as the biggest bags of dickless, sinister assholes an MRA group sent 400 made-up rape accusations to a college's inbox, likely drowning any legitimate cries of help.. Thanks a lot, have a merry christmas, assholes..

That's good. Very good. Focusing on some aspects, to make the scope a bit smaller is good. Good! Now start making it! Show us what you're making. Stop writing, and start doing some of the basic stuff (get the character walking, talking, etc.)

Just to round this out, the downside of not going with AGS is that you have to build and program all the mechanics of inventory, dialogue systems, pathfinding (or some simple variant of that), hitboxes, input, cutscenes, animation, etc.. There's a lot of built-in stuff in AGS that specifically makes it easy to do adventure games. You can do all those things in Unity/Game Maker, but you'll have to program the base of it yourself.
-
I believe Unreal Engine 4 is the way to go here.
-
Also, in general a point-n-click adventure games is probably a really rough place to start off, because it's all content creation. Most of the enjoyment comes from discovering new content, so there's this need to have lots of it. If you can keep it small and contained, you could do it, but it's hard to pull off well. If you're completely new to this whole thing, maybe start out by making something smaller.. just to get the feel of programming a full game, even if it is just a Pac-Man clone or a Tetris thing or whatever. You'll be amazed at how much work is in making such a simple thing. And then you'll brain will explode trying to extrapolate that to a full-on Adventure Game with lots of characters and dialogue.
-
You can have particles and poop lying around in the scene and scale up to whatever resolution you want. Huzzah!
-
It's missing a BILLION features. Nah, it's ok, and for an adventure game it's probably enough. Unlimited power!
-
One good reason to not go for AGS is the resolution restriction. Can't go above 1024x768, which may be enough for you Twig, BUT IT AIN'T 1080p, AIGHT! Going for Unity instead of GameMaker also would give you the option of having the characters (or the environment) in 3D allowing for smoother animations with fewer resources. Now you must choose!

Just to throw it in here, I think Stupid Invaders is really stupid and kind of shit. It looks fine, but it's a drag..
-
Yes, double click to fast-forward to the next screen is essential in the late game, IMO. When you've seen all the scenery it becomes really repetitive to walk through it every single time..

Christ, that video and the narrator of it..

Yes! It is coming so soon! Aaahh, I'm so excited!!
