Just finished watching season 1 of Gravity Falls. What an awesome show! Kind of wish I hadn't rushed through it so I had more left to watch. Every time Candy speaks, it's really weird, because I will always associate that voice with BMO.

I tried to look it up, but it didn't google. I guess it's "What we do in the shadows"?

I think much of what I listened to this year was from 2013 or even a few years earlier, as I practically hadn't listened to new music the previous years. Also I started dancing salsa so I heard a lot of salsa music, regardless of the year. Also, Moondog was playing a lot, discovered through these forums. But from 2014 I do have some favourites: The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream I love this Springsteen-y dad rock with spacey guitars and there were probably more days when I listened to a song from this album than there were those I didn't. I love most of the tracks; Red Eyes is probably the most listened Tycho - Awake Found this through the Hohokum trailer. Really love these kind of electronic soundscapes. Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire for No Witness Don't have much to say about it, though. White Fire is my favourite track from this. Also worth a mention: Fear of Men - Loom (favourite track: Luna) Hospitality - Trouble (favourite track: Nightingale) There's a lot of 2014 music that I'll probably discover next year. I just found out Siinai released a new album, and I really enjoyed their previous one; I haven't listened to the Son Lux one more than once yet (or two of them? apparently one is not on Deezer), or the one by Faust ...

IMHO that HD paintover that BigJKO posted would be sweet. That's pretty close to what my brain remembers the game looking like. It seems that's not what we'll get, though

The Hobbit was not bad, but there are all kinds of things wrong with it. It's still based on a children's book, but made into a violent war movie.

I briefly talked with a girl at a conference party in the summer about board games and started getting into her a bit, then was interrupted and didn't get her contacts. Anyway, later I kind of went somewhat out of my way to get in touch with her through common acquaintances and googling (kind of stalking, I guess?), then asked her to join our board game nights and now I've been meeting her about every second week or so for months. I was hoping to date her, but she just wanted to be friends. I still like her as a friend though and I'm glad that I made a friend (I've only made a few lasting friendships since high school, and it was usually the other person's initiative). I'm especially glad because I didn't have many female friends before.

I started playing it today, and it's pretty ok. Seems to be in the vein of Ethan Carter (Vanishing of), but with more cartoony graphics and more puzzles and collectibles. There is a weird inventory system that I'm not sure if I like it yet. After going meticulously through the first two areas, I somehow ran through the third one accidentally in the right way and ended up where I had to go, but now I still have the collectibles I need from that area, and I saw that it is a huge maze so now I'm kind of put off continuing by having to go into that maze. PS. I just found that note on the screenshot, and totally did not notice the names yet. I wish I had found this thread just a bit later.

I haven't played much this year, but I still hope to play more games this Christmas. So far Shadow of Mordor is in the lead. If Sleeping Dogs DE counts as this year, then I liked that even more, though. I'll make a real GOTY post later.

Come Get Your Sacred Objects! It's the Outcast HD Remake Kickstarter!
Erkki replied to toblix's topic in Video Gaming
I didn't read your edit and bought it. But whatever, it's like, Outcast, and the best game soundtrack ever. -
Yes. I feel mostly the same as Mangela about S2/S3 No. I don't usually know these things (thankfully - judging by the ratings?)

I watched the three seasons of Girls in one week. It was really good.

Oh yeah, Conan was amazing. I hope they will find a way to remake it in a way that does it justice whenever they get around to that.

This thread has given me a resolve to skip playing the series for a while. Crossed Unity off my wish list.

http://handmadehero.org/ This seems like an awesome project by Casey Muratory. A twitch stream on every day, teaching people how to program a complex game in C from scratch. I started watching the Intro to C on WIndows videos on youtube (these precede the actual game streams) and I think it might be a good way to actually learn programming, although I'm not sure since i'm not very good at looking at things I already know from the perspective of someone who doesn't know them. I might follow along in my own language, just to see how well it would work for such a project compared to C. I have to do some fixes and implement some features that are still missing, though.

Oh man, I totally forgot this was already posted in the Programming thread. Sorry, didn't mean to ignore that.

I randomly saw Magical Girl (2014) yesterday, as my Spanish teacher had an extra ticket. I liked it a lot. It starts off as a sort of light weight, but dark slightly comedic drama, but then starts to spiral more and more into darkness. Every hint of the characters' motivations and every move is very calculated, though. There are never many things hinted at once, at least not as it seemed to me. It is very readable, if you can use that word for a movie. During watching it, I thought "well factored" as it applies to software, maybe well-layered would be more appropriate.

Damn, now you made me open the one IPA that has been in my fridge for 2 months, since I mostly stopped drinking beer.

This game is kind of hard to get started with. Appears an adventure/platformer hybrid, but is actually way more complex than that and seems to have no real tutorial?
-
Yeah, the 5th chapter is pretty big. I'm not sure how long it plays compared to the others, but there's a lot more complexity. I had to look at a hint once, having missed a rather obvious (in hindsight) visual cue. There were a few times I got stuck, and what didn't help was that there were some distractions as to what you can interact with e.g. , but I usually got back on track in a minute or two. I think it is also perhaps the best chapter so far, with some actual interesting character interactions and better puzzles than usual for the series. Some cool perspective changes, special bonus points for doing that in a claymation game!
