I mainly wanna talk about their movies, but feel free to use this thread to share you thoughts on their series and documentaries as well if you wish. I've watched a bunch of their original movies lately, and y'know what I've realized? They're not that good. Not bad either, most of them are just... watchable. I guess this stems mainly from the process through which most of them end up with the "Netflix Original" label slapped on them. As I understand it, most of these are not originally produced by Netflix, but rather it's small movies that have already been made and end up getting picked up by Netflix when they're looking for distribution. It stands to reason that any real masterpieces will find more lucrative distribution deals than what Netflix can afford to give them. But maybe, I thought, some gems managed to slip through? These are my Top 10 Netflix Original Movies of 2018 (so far) 1. Annihilation This one got a theatrical release in the US, but apparently didn't do very well and so Netflix scooped up the European distribution rights for a pretty penny. It's one of the best sci-fi films I've seen in a long time. 2. Us and Them A sad and beautiful tale of a young Chinese couple who meet, become friends, fall in love, fall out of love, and meet again 10 years later. ...er, and that's it as far as "great movies" go. The rest of these I would merely classify as "good". The kinda stuff that pops up on Netflix and you watch it and go, "hey, that wasn't bad!" 3. A Stupid and Futile Gesture National Lampoon biopic with some great performances. 4. Apostle It's like the Wicker Man but even crazier. Also since it's directed by The Raid's Gareth Evans it has some nice fisticuffs. 5. Ibiza Comedy about some friends who go to Ibiza to paaaaaartyyyyyyyyyy. I came for the Gillian Jacobs, I stayed for the Vanessa Bayer. Seriously, she steals the show. 6. Manhunt John Woo's latest! Yeah, the guy's output has been in steady decline since the early 90's, but this still provides some thrills. The farmhouse shootout in the middle is great, almost up there with his most classic actionscenes from Hardboiled and The Killer. 7. The Cloverfield Paradox Hey I liked it OKAY??? Yeah it was a bunch of bollocks, but it was very entertaining while it was happening. 8. Roxanne Roxanne Biopic about 80's rapper Roxanne Shante with some very good performances. 9. The Ritual A movie about a bunch of Britts who get lost in Norwegian woods and then Satanic shit starts happening. It was pretty creepy! 10. Like Father Between this, Kodachrome, and Father of the Year, there's been a lot of BAD DAD movies on Netflix this year, but this one takes the cake. Kelsey Grammer is a dad, so bad. Kristen Bell is a daughter, so sad. This movie was perhaps not RAD, but I was GLAD, that I watched it! Also watchable: Illang: The Wolf Brigade, Errementari, Hold The Dark, The Polka King, The Night Comes For Us Of course the year is not over. The new Coen brothers movie is arriving up in the middle of this month, AVClub say it's good, and I'm sure I'll have to work it into the list after I've watched it. Also there's that new Orson Welles movie that just popped up out of nowhere, but I haven't watched it yet.

Hey folks, I'm not a huge strategy gamer, but I do like the occasional turn based strategy game, and I'm looking for recommendations. This summer I played, and greatly enjoyed, Invisible, Inc., and Steamworld Heist. For the past couple weeks I've been playing a bit of XCOM 2, which is a good game, but also has a couple design decisions I really don't like. First is the in-between-mission world map stuff. Building the base, managing finances, and build orders? I don't like any of that, would rather the game just be a string of missions along a linear narrative. Second is the "invisible dice roll" determining my units' aim, etc. I like how Invisible Inc cuts that element of randomness out, so the outcome of a turn is entirely down to my ability to analyze the situation and decide on the best action. If I overlook something and things go sour, that's fine! But if, like in XCOM 2, I have a bad turn because of a string of bad dice rolls? That drives me up the fucking wall. Steamworld Heist also cut out some of the element of chance by having you actually aim your units' weapons manually(tho criticals are still determined by a dice roll). Other games in the genre that I love: Frozen Synapse and FTL(which I know goes against a lot of what I railed against above, but there you go, I'm complex!). I've also played a bit of Door Kickers, Qvadriga, and Convoy. They're ok, not big faves, but they should give you an idea of the kinda things I'm interested in. Anyway, TL;DR, I'm looking for titles that fit these criteria: -Focuses on combat, with a minimal or no in-between-mission managerial stuff. -No, or as few as possible, invisible dice rolls determining my units' actions. Randomisation and procedural generation when it comes to the layouts/conditions of missions are ok tho. -Genre: turn based, simultaneous turn based, or pause-time.

It is time again, my friends, to return to the Idle Thumbs forums for a yearly ritual. THE RANKING OF THE NETFLIXES Original Movies, that is. 1. I'm Thinking Of Ending Things I felt this one. As for Kaufman movies, I think I almost like it as much as Eternal Sunshine, but it's a lot darker. 2. The Old Guard This was just a really good sci-fi action movie. The action is thrilling not only because it's choreographed well, but because the stakes are well set-up. Unlike Extraction, pffff. 3. Lost Bullet This is my pick for HIDDEN GEM on Netflix this year. Great French actionmovie about a man framed for murder. It's a story you've heard before, but it's very well-told, and the actionscenes are great. 4. Da 5 Bloods That Delroy Lindo, man! He should be in more movies. Also pretty good: The Devil All The Time Love Birds Mank Meh: Extraction - all style, no substance! The Half Of It - I don't even remember any of this. Enola Holmes - Good cast, just... kinda boring. Disapointments: Eurovision:The Story of Fire Saga - I like Will Ferrell, and I'm an avid watcher of the Eurovision, so I was expecting to like this, but all the jokes are the same kinda lame jokes that the Eurovision already make about themselves every year.

I was just about to preorder a PS5 last week but then I saw it'll take until NEXT YEAR before it'd arrive cause they're so sold-out, so I dunno, maybe I'll see if I can find one in the local stores on opening day? That's probably wishful thinking. But yeah, an upgrade feels like a no-brainer since it'll run all the PS4 games I'm currently playing anyway, but with an improved performance.

Yeeeees I'm also playing this! In a week when TLOU2 and Desperados 3 is releasing, this thing just came out of nowhere and stole my attention away from those. I like games where you're just a everyday workerperson doing a job, and I like zero-G space-sim-stuff, so this is right up my alley. It's cool that Focus is throwing so much money at jazzing up weird niche sims like this and Snowrunner and giving them the AAA-treatment.

Or just get a Rift S. Way cheaper and perfectly fine for HL Alyx. Anyway sure you're gonna come to VR for Alyx, but you're gonna stay for Beat Saber.

So anyone else play this Half Life: Alyx thingy? I just finished it and here's WOT I THINK. Performance I'm on a GTX1070, i7-4770K 3.50GHz, 16GB RAM, playing with Oculus Rift. I had a few crashes, and also a bit stuttery performance towards the end. The game also kept warning that my memory was low whenever I started it up. It says it requires 12GB RAM, but I have 16, so dunno what I'm supposed to do about that (yeah, I had all other unnecessary applications shut down). Had graphics quality set to Low, tho the game still looked great, and performed smoothly for the most part. Gameplay This is the most polished first person shooter I've played in VR. Gunplay and other interactions feel great. They way you have to flick your wrist back to pull things with the gravity-gloves feels great. There's a ton of great little environmental touches. You can play the piano, draw with crayons, honk car horns, pick up everything that looks pick-uppable and open anything that looks like it should open. I played seated, with smooth locomotion. My favourite part was a stealth-focused section in a vodka distillery halfway through the game, which packs a lot of neat VR stealth ideas into just 30 min. It left me wishing someone would make a proper Thief VR game. Story It starts off strong, with a clear objective which you then pretty quickly accomplish. After that the pace slows down for the middle part of the game before getting really intriguing in the 3rd act. There are some crazy revelations and it's very fun to see how it ties into the series as a whole. Video! Having finished this it's hard not to think another Half-Life game is right around the corner. They way it ends, man... they just can't leave us hanging for another 15 years before continuing the story. I mean, they wouldn't do that, would they? ... would they?

I realize I've barely posted anything about my game devlopment here in recent times, so to recap: I quit my job of 13 years last spring and founded my own indie development studio, September Games. Since then I've been working on a new version of my 2015 itch.io release Stilt Fella, and just this morning I put up the Steam page! Trailer! Steam Page WISHLIST, Y'ALL! WISHLIST LIKE CRAZY! Nice. I did give it another go with the new update but I think I only got +4 or so. Oh, one small last change I thought of: pressing "continue" with spacebar, that way the whole round would be playable with keyboard.

And that is how it's done.

Ok this is a remarkably solid golf game. The gameplay is tight and I love the commentary. My first round. I didn't quite get a good grip on the controls until hole 2. edit: played another round, on Intermediate and got a score of +1, just below Par! Suggestions: -change clubs with up/down arrows. -when putting there should be a minimum distance that the ball will always go, even if you just double-tap the shoot button because you're really close to the hole and don't wanna over-do it. -add 9 more holes and release it on Steam. I'll definitely buy it! The Thumbs would probably be cool with lending their voices/likeness to the game if you asked nicely.

Very cool! This sounds fun, and a good re-use the RM tech. Those clouds look gorgeous. I could send you a model of the guy from A Good One, if you want. Do you need him posed as sitting in an airplane seat? Or are all the characters just hanging out in the cargo hold or whatever? Hell, maybe Tennis Toad should come along for the ride?

Updated list: Marriage Story the best 2019 Netflix original. Tho I haven't seen their latest one, 2Popez. Shirkers was indeed an original as well, a 2018 one. I recently rewatched it, it was great. Wonderful soundtrack too.

Remember when I said I was gonna release this before the end of the year? I LIED! Now that I'm a professional game developer there's nothing I love more than LYING TO CONSUMERS! MUAHAHAHAHAHA it makes me feel SO GOOD! Seriously tho, turns out making games takes longer than you'd think. Currently aiming for an early 2020 release, here's a new trailer. These past couple weeks I made some big improvements to the physics. The game feels better to play now and I managed to get rid of some annoying glitches that's been haunting the game for a long time. I also added the IRON FELLA mode, where you must play through the entire game without falling once! Still to do: -a few more levels. -some sound improvements. -localizations. -SUPER SECRET FEATURE THAT MIGHT NOT WORK OUT -Final marketing push (me shouting at people on forums to buy the game) It's close. My appologies to Mington in that other thread. I thought he was being overly doomy and gloomy, but he was right! Man, this Valve open structure thing. I'm sure it's great for people who work there, but it doesn't seem especially great for maintaining focus or actually finishing projects.
