  1. This isn't true for Korean StarCraft. I know for a fact the top players had 6-figure annual salaries. For example, some information about Jaedong's salary in Brood War: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/brood-war/100255-news-free-agency-period-signings-jaedong-up-for-grabs. I can't find a proper source, but Nada supposedly had a 3-year contract with WeMade Fox worth 750,000,000 won (>$200,000/year). In Korea, the OSL/MSL individual leagues wasn't regarded as highly as the team Proleague, because I think the team leagues are better at promoting a brand compared to the individual leagues, and brands are where all the money is in Korean StarCraft. The emphasis has shifted more towards individual leagues when StarCraft 2 came around, I think because that's what Western audiences are more interested in (we have no affinity for Korean brands like KT Rolster or SKT T1), since we seem to favour rooting for individual stars.
  2. Windows 10 is slowly driving me insane. There are small things here and there that just stop working as intended and I can't figure out exactly why. Like yesterday when I was at my friend's place, I suddenly stopped being able to save things to my documents folder (unless I individually ran everything as administrator), but now I can again. Dragon Age: Origins stopped being able to save, though I haven't looked too closely into this issue just yet. At one point I couldn't load my ubuntu iso in vmware player, but now I can again. I don't know if any of these problems are actually Windows 10-specific. I haven't encountered any of that while I was on Windows 7 though. Oh and starting up Freecell takes ages since I have to log in and sync my save from the cloud...
  3. The Smash Bros. Thread + A Primer

This is a cool thread, thanks for starting it. Those of you who are interested in a Melee-oriented podcast show should check out Melee it on Me. The podcast usually recaps a recent big tournament and does predictions/speculation for upcoming tournaments as well. Although Mew2King is considered at the bottom of the 6 Gods, he is the only God who is competitive in Brawl and Smash 4, recently winning the Brawl tournament at Super Smash Con. All other Gods are only top-level in Melee. At one point, ZeRo suggested he would consider playing Melee more seriously after winning EVO, but realised it is better to focus on the game that he already excels in. Some other Smash 4 players to watch out for that have the highest likelihood of toppling ZeRo's incredible streak are Nairo (recently partnered with Team Liquid) and ESAM, a highly technical Pikachu player who also has a strong background in Melee and Brawl.
  4. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Charger definitely doesn't seem like a good match for Urchin Underpass, before or after the patch, in my opinion. Yesterday I played some turf war with the Slosher on Urchin and won the three times I played on it (also lost both games on Arowana), although not all of them were necessarily one-sided. I think it's just a matter of some weapons being better on some maps than others, and I am perfectly fine with that. Slosher and rollers seem to be the best on Urchin, whereas I struggled on Arowana with the bucket because I was getting shot at by chargers all over the place. In other news, Rainmaker mode finally has a date, which is Friday evening for US players and Saturday morning for EU players (I assume that means Saturday evening for Asian/Australasian players). It's a mode that requires players to carry the Rainmaker superweapon from the centre of the map to the enemy base. It looks like it replaces your weapon with an inzooka-like weapon, and you are unable to superjump while carrying it. It looks like you can't drop it unless you are splatted, at which point the Rainmaker drops and a shield forms around it, which needs to be destroyed before another player can carry it. Splat Zones is still my favourite ranked mode because it is more in line with how I enjoy playing the game; i.e. covering the ground with ink, but I'll definitely be giving this mode a go this weekend.
  5. StarCraft 2 (and by extension, I think also Heroes of the Storm) did at some point include a command for observers to pull back the camera to be able to see more of the map at once, allowing large late-game battles to be viewed in its entirety, especially when flanking maneuvers are happening. Does Dota 2 have something like this? Anyway, all this robot talk is actually kinda sad to hear. Kids harassing mall robots is one thing, but decapitating hitchbot was actually horrific to hear about.

I don't feel the same way about Urchin Underpass. I feel the narrow pathways before led to the overcentralisation of certain weapons and made it very difficult to leave your base once you have been pushed back. The new Urchin Underpass opens up the main entrance to your base, but reworks the central area so that there is more cover available. I hate the dynamo roller as much as anyone, though. Its range definitely needs to be nerfed, or maybe reduce its effectiveness (e.g. more paint scatter leading to less 1-hit splats) when splashing from a high ground. I played in a squad with Patricia from Kotaku not too long ago, and while it is definitely better than random squads, using skype or another voice chat software would have been really beneficial.
  7. Pro Gaming Documentaries.

Although I have been into Smash Bros since about 2006 and been aware of the competitive scene for almost just as long (used to watch early tournaments with Ken and Isai, etc.), it wasn't until I watched the documentary that I decided to invest myself in it. I've gone to a few tournaments now, mostly for Smash 4 because I'm better at that game, but I'm also practising Smash Melee in the background. I also enjoy watching Melee tournaments much more at the moment, though that may change if more and more people threaten ZeRo for the top spot of Smash 4. While I think most people here are aware of the eSports scene for PC gaming (DotA, StarCraft) and console games like Halo, I think the Smash Documentary is worth watching for anyone curious in how a party game became so popular as a competitive title, drawing in 200,000+ viewers at EVO and seeing how deep the game can actually be.
  8. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

I didn't want to transfer my Wii system to my Wii U, since I want to keep both consoles , so I actually manually copied the save file via SD card. It was also a quicker option since I downloaded and installed Xenoblade on an impulse as soon as I saw it go live.
  9. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

It seems that it's because the Wii U reverts to Wii mode, so I don't see why this would be a special case. I can't speak for MS/Sony consoles, sorry.
  10. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Yep the gamepad can indeed be used. The screen just mimics what's on the TV, so off-TV play is also in.
  11. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

I was also pleased to find out I could transfer my save file from my Wii to my Wii U and continue my playthrough (I had previously only borrowed the game from a friend).
  12. Splatoon is Ink-redible

The August update hits today! Would anyone like to play Squad battles together? If we get enough people (not necessarily from this forum, invite your friends!) we could try to play a custom lobby too. I'll probably be on quite late for Americans, since I'm in Australia.
  13. Splatoon is Ink-redible

I went into Splatoon as someone who never played a lot of shooters and thus don't really know much about the finer details of tactics in such games. But, I actually saw Splatoon a little as a Lords Management game in third person, on a very micro scale. You've got 30 seconds of a laning phase where you push out three lanes (most maps quite distinctly have three lanes from the starting area), a few skirmishes near the centre, then from there you receive your ulti and team fights begin to happen. The principles of Lords Management games such as not overextending still apply as you said, and you can even TP in Splatoon, which usually isn't a thing in shooters, but is a staple in Lords Management. The different weapon loadouts are also suited to carry roles (high focus on splatting, e.g. seeker, inkzooka and killer wail) and support roles (e.g. squid beakon, splash wall, echolocator). One thing I'd like to mention as sort of an addition to the general tips to players you've listed and also relevant to 2v1 scenarios: something that you can do when you are in a 2v1 situation in Splatoon is to shoot at your ally if they are under fire, and you are out of range of the enemy. Standing in enemy ink makes you take residual damage, and enemy fire sprays ink all around you, making it hard to escape. Shooting at your ally gives them a path of your colour ink for them to retreat through quickly, allowing you both to re-position safely, and reduces the residual damage they take from standing in the enemy ink.
  14. Splatoon is Ink-redible

That's cool, I am aware of places like squidboards where a lot of people are seriously looking into competitive viability and such, but it's nice to see your consolidated posts about the things you think are important. Personally I am playing the game somewhat seriously (B+ in ranked) but I'm just relying on mastering the weapons over focusing on minutiae with gear abilities. Somewhere down the line I will probably start paying attention more to gear abilities, but at this point I just wanna be staying fresh =P I don't even have all the weapons yet, I kinda just bought the ones that interested me and even then I haven't used them all yet. There are definitely some weapons I own that I won't be touching much ever after trying them for a few rounds.
  15. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Thanks so much for all that info dude, you put a ton of work into that. Is there some kind of spreadsheet that you're putting all your observations into? I haven't really concentrated on making a good build, mostly because I'm still unsure how abilities affect my play exactly, and felt like most bonuses aren't significant. I definitely do agree that special charge up is one of the most powerful abilities though. Also, how did you come up with that 40 seconds saved from 6 deaths? That seems like quite a big deal, I was under the impression that it takes about 5-10 seconds to respawn normally, and you're suggesting that quick respawn is saving almost 7 seconds per death. Do you guys think some kind of voice chat group for thumbs could be made when the patch hits? For when we team up in squad ranked mode.
  16. Splatoon is Ink-redible

The August update has officially been dated! August 6 (at least for Japan and Australia, not sure what other regions are like, probably within a day of each other) It will include: Custom lobbies with 1-7 of your friends, in ANY team configuration including 1v4 Partying up for ranked mode, in groups of 2-4 40 new pieces of gear New weapon types: bucket and gatling gun level cap raised to 50 S and S+ ranks added This won't be the end of free updates to the game. It seems rainmaker game mode has been delayed and will not arrive with this August 6 update. Still, that's heaps of stuff and I'm looking forward to squadding up with Thumbs squids =D
  17. Summer Games Done Quick 2015

I was really enjoying the RE4 run since I love that game, but every time they opened their mouths about Ashley, grooooaaaan.
  18. Recently I've been feeling some motivation to get back into Super Smash Bros Melee. Of course, many of you know that at the competitive level, this game is played on CRT TVs, as it is done at EVO. So since I only had an LCD HDTV at home, I went snooping around to obtain a CRT. I recalled seeing an abandoned CRT somewhere near my apartment, so I tried to look for it. Was it next to the garbage bins? Nope. On the side of the road? Nope. In my laundry room downstairs? Ahah! There it is! So I carry this dusty box back to my unit, and plug things in. There's no remote, but all the buttons still work! Victory! The TV turns on, static. I switch it to video. A black screen. Oops, I forgot to plug in my Wii. So I plug in the AV cords and I'm greeted with the Press A screen. At this point I suspect nothing, but upon pressing A, I realise that the TV is black and white. I boot up Melee, and I'm greeted with characters in varying shades of grey. Red Marth and Green Marth look the same. Orange Fox and Purple Fox also look the same. Well, I guess we won't be playing character dittos on this TV then. Later I asked on the facebook group for my apartment if anyone had a CRT TV to give, and I got one later that night. It had colour.
  19. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Ohhh man this Splatfest for AU/NZ+Europeans is kinda a snoozefest (pun very much intended). More than half my matches are Team Eat vs Team Eat, and often the opposite team only has 3 members, so we just completely roll over them. Team Sleep is very much underrepresented, and there have been a few matches where they also had only 3 members.
  20. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Having finally played Moray Towers, my saltiness derives from users of the E-liter, which is able to shoot across the centre of the map, and seems to be the only charger capable of doing so. Thus playing ranked whenever Moray Towers is in the rotation, approximately 3-4 players are all using some kind of E-liter gun. I did eventually find out how to get up to the opposite sniper nest from the low-ground, and splatting snipers who are too busy looking elsewhere has been fun. In other Splatoon news, I finally completed the single player! That final boss is great, and I highly recommend anyone who hasn't played the single player to go back and finish it. I want to go back and get all the scrolls I missed, but there are a few that I can't figure out the locations of.
  21. Satoru Iwata has passed away

So devastated by this news. I'm a longtime Nintendo fan and Iwata was always such a bright spot in the company for me. Nintendo Direct and Iwata Asks were among my favourite content to watch and read, I really can't express how much he meant to me as a gamer. Rest in peace, Mr Iwata.
  22. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Congrats to all the Dog and Rock fans out there! I'm happy with my 18 Super Sea Snails from losing. I may have played way too much to get the maximum rating... Sorry to hear about that Twig D: Pretty sure every Splatfest is exactly 24 hours, hopefully you'll get in on the next one.
  23. Assuming he continues to play Rosalina, I think he will actually be a strong threat. Rosalina is a fantastic, yet underused character, so many players may not be prepared for what she can do. Bill is also no slouch, there is plenty of footage of him on Youtube doing quite well in the game.
  24. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Here in Australia our Splatfest is music themed! Pop vs Rock (as it is in Europe). So apparently the highest rank for us is ETERNAL Pop/Rock Girl/Boy. Such a badass name. I absolutely love the atmosphere here. It's amazing. Nintendo has done a fantastic job, down to all the different dance animations that the squids do. (I've seen at least three unique animations)
  25. Splatoon is Ink-redible

I haven't had access to Splatoon for the last month basically, making me super sad. But how is everyone enjoying the new ranked mode? I will hopefully get my Splatoon back from my friend (she borrowed my whole Wii U while I was overseas and left Splatoon at home when she returned the console) in time for the Splatfest, so I've got that going for me.
