  1. [Dev log] I Am Suspicious of Myself

Help needed: Could I please have opinions on text adventure scripting languages for a first-timer? For what I have planned I will need a bit of flexibility in response to certain commands, like changing one's entire inventory as a response to a specific input. Example: You have just watched the Matrix. You are suspicious of yourself (this is not the full text, just the gist) > Inventory You have: - A phone - One blue pill - One red pill That inventory would then be wiped when you watch a different movie.

That's great! I don't know if any engines I choose could include that, but maybe I could link to it or something.
  3. [Dev log] I Am Suspicious of Myself

Dev log 1: Have started writing the text for the game on my 1990s Quickpad Pro (this is also the machine I still play text adventures on). I've written much of the text for The Matrix and some notes for the other movies. I need to research text adventure engines and find out what's the easiest for a beginner, however I prefer the old-fashioned typing method as opposed to clicking multiple choice menus that I think you get in Twine? This is so I can include a ton of Easter eggs or other responses to random inputs. I think the 'main game' will be very short and probably pretty easy for the player, and hopefully amusing. But more fun will be had by typing in other stuff. My text adventure player of choice is Frotz because it works on the Quickpad, but I'm not sure how the Infocom engine compares to modern developments in text adventures. However the advantage of choosing this type of game is I can still write up all the text and optional side stuff before I've finalised the engine/scripting language.
  4. Crusader K+ngs II

Thanks! The GoG release included the Deus Vult DLC but I will track down the fan patch also. By CK2 "not running well" on my laptop I think I meant "at all", it's that old. No graphics drivers in Win 10 so anything 3D is bad. I think I prefer the 2D interfaces of CK1 and EU2 anyway, it feels more like a board game. I like the style of character portraits in CK1.

More than that, it's the home of the Chicago School of Economics, Milton Friedman, and the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Boys.
  6. Crusader K+ngs II

Hey, this might not be the bestest thread to post this, but my laptop doesn't run CK2 very well so on a whim I bought the first CK in the recent GOG sale. The interface and mechanics seem more opaque and different to CK2. Is it worth investing the time to learn CK1?

  8. Make sure you do an upgrade first, not a clean install. It needs to upgrade over an activated Windows. Otherwise your Win10 installation won't be activated, and you won't have a code to enter to make it valid. If you want to do a clean install, you'll have to do the upgrade first and check that it's activated. The activation will be tied to the PC hardware and stored on MS's servers. Then the clean install will be activated by checking against that stored data.
  9. eReaders - What is everyone's thoughts?

When I bought a Paperwhite I gave my old Kindle 3 (keyboard) to my nieces. I've just decided to swap back for the following pedantic and/or idiosyncratic reasons: When I bought the Paperwhite I'd assumed they had improved the screen to be actually white. But it's just the same type of screen with a light that makes it look whiter. I don't like how it looks. I don't use the light at all; either I read in daylight or I have a lamp. You can't turn the light all the way off. I'm sure it uses almost no battery but it still irritates my obsessive tendencies. I miss the page turn buttons and the little clicky D-button. I liked having the tactile (haptic?) feedback. Same with the keyboard, even though it's rarely used. I find the touchscreen to be not always super responsive. Sometimes you need to swipe rather than touch, like if you're using the browser. Scrolling menus is harder than using the D-button. If a book has hyperlinks it's easy to click them accidentally when turning a page. I never use the annotations, word-lookup type stuff but it is also easy to activate them accidentally. If some dust or dirt gets on the screen - which is going to be often, if reading outside - I don't want to worry about accidental page turns when wiping it off. The screen itself is not pleasant to touch for me, something about the anti-reflective texture. Knowing how fragile e-reader screens are, I get nervous about touching it - this is probably baseless. I find the shop harder to navigate due to scrolling menus; I only recently figured out how to find the wishlist, which was the most useful thing when stuck somewhere and wanting a new book. In addition to the above - though irrelevant to anyone else - I had a super expensive leather case for the K3 that I missed, and the K3 was the free 3G model which was occasionally useful. I think my nieces will love the Paperwhite for the touchscreen, I doubt they'll care about my personal nitpics. In the Paperwhite's favour the fonts and screen resolution are a clear improvement and going back will be a slight readjustment. But once you're engrossed in a book, words is words. Note that I also stopped using a smartphone in favour of a Nokia 3310, if that helps the above make more sense.

  11. Which is best Bass?

I have a JPN Super Famicom and can buy either Super Black Bass or Super Black Bass 2 for roughly the same (cheap) price. I am hoping there are some Bass experts here, drawn to posting on these forums by the Idle Thumbs' retrospective on the US version of Super Black Bass. Is the US Super Black Bass the same as the JPN Super Black Bass? How is Super Black Bass 2 different from Super Black Bass? Is it an iteration on the mechanics as many console games were in this era or is it a completely new Bass? Does it have the same ? If I buy Super Black Bass 2 will I get a similar but superior Bass experience? Or is it a pale imitation of the classic Bass the Thumbs played? I could discern these things myself with some more Bass browsing but I didn't want to deny any Bass enthusiasts the opportunity to talk some serious Bass.

This is best BASS, but is it best Bass?
  13. Which is best Bass?

So they are different enough to justify owning multiple Basses?

Wrote this on Neogaf in reponse to similar questions about how to help this sorry situation and it sank without a trace. So I thought it was about time I registered here. Hope you find this advice useful. -------------------- Won't someone please THINK OF THE GAMERGATES They are being unfairly targeted in all this. Their intrinsic gamergate identity was hijacked by bad people of the internet in order to harass innocent females. Gamergates love and respect females. Some of them are themselves female! But they have had to watch helplessly as people pretending to be gamergates drove first one, then more females out of their homes. Nothing can describe the horror these gamergates feel at this, yet their agony is compounded by clueless media or online commenters who indiscriminately lump them together with their oppressors. That's awful! What can I do to help? First, educate yourself on what a gamergate is, and how to tell if a gamergate is genuine. All gamergates are born with a telltale mark, or hashtag, which they use to form bonds and communicate with each other. If you see someone doing something nasty on the internet but they do not bear this mark, do not blame the gamergates! It is probably just someone who is being grumpy, because they are on the internet and the internet makes you grumpy. If you do see the mark, it is a little trickier. You will have to carefully read the words that are being written and judge them in their proper context. Is the purported gamergate responding to someone else who said something nasty about gamergates? If so, cut them a little slack as they are dealing with a whole lot right now! But if they're saying bad things about a female, it's likely this isn't a gamergate at all, but instead a BAD INTERNET PERSON. Bad internet people like to cause trouble for gamergates and also for females and by pretending to be gamergates they can cause all the trouble they like! Unfortunately it is trivially easy for bad internet people to do this, so be vigilant. Can anything be done about these bad internet people? The most important thing you can do is educate others about gamergates, and call out any instances where you suspect a bad internet person is pretending to be one. Above all, be calm and patient. For instance, someone says that gamergates are misogynists (that's people who hate females). Don't lose your cool! Educate them on the gamergate hashtag, and that anyone saying bad things about females is no true gamergate but instead a bad internet person. If they persist, be firm! Ask for evidence! Where are the telltale hashtags? Which supposed gamergate said the bad thing, and where, and when? If they don't provide evidence, you have exposed their lies! But if they do, it's even better as with the information we've given you you'll be able to expose the bad internet person's deceptions. It's outrageous that I haven't heard of this! Sadly, gamergates are heavily discriminated against and misunderstood, and this is especially evident in the mainstream media. Journalists will not investigate the realities of the situation when they can more easily write sensationalist headlines demonising gamergates. There are a few allies out there - a real life Hollywood actor, a journalist from the prestigious Breitbart organisation, even a female person who calls herself a feminist! The latter is especially good news as it is well known that when you have a feminist-identifying female on your side it is impossible to say or do anything bad to other female people. But gamergates have one more ally who's even more important - you! Yes, by lending your support and educating others you will help achieve a future where all people on all sides of this mess will join together in condemnation of the bad internet people, whoever they are, and all females will be at peace again knowing the gamergates love them. We can do this. Together.
