That's the perfect combo! Followed both.

Would you try doing it first person or would you be more interested in setting it up as a kind of theatre experience, like how Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door's battles went? EDIT: Ok if they were given the necessary resources I'd love Kentucky Route Zero adding VR back into that game. I think there's a lot to be said for adding the subtlety of 3D to games too, as long as the bombastic immersive stuff can sell the actual device to enough people. I don't like 3D in cinemas very much, but occasional movies can use it for really nice touches that just add a dimension (pun unintended) to the experience of watching it that's nice. It's actually what I liked about the 3DS, it does just feel like a nice thing in some games when it works. But so few games take a blatant advantage of it, everyone feels like it's a redundant gimmick in the device and if it was optional from the start, loads of people probably wouldn't have bothered.

Particularly in light of the GDC news, people might be interested in this document to help transition from Unity to Unreal: https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/GettingStarted/FromUnity/index.html I was thinking about learning C++ to expand my repertoire anyway so I'm thinking I might get back into making my weekly games (which I've neglected far too long) with UE, but do experienced people here think it's overly ambitious to try that? Just because, my general impression of UE is that it's bigger and higher level than Unity so I'm unsure if I'd actually make worthwhile progress on a project in my free time over a week. EDIT: Also is it tough to run? My laptop is a mess and my desktop is dieing. They run Unity fine because I make games with primitive geommetry (basically either simple 3D primitives or sprites) but if Unreal was a big difference it could be a problem. I would just download it and check straight away but I'm on hotel Wifi.

I'm just imagining a crotchety English madam teacher with a joint and a 420 blaze it t-shirt on over her dress. "One does not lose one's capability for proper speech from smoking marijuana, I think I have made that quite clear in the past Sebastian. Now please spell everyday correctly."

I'm terrible and forgetful, is there a twitter I can follow for updates on the game? Whether it's personal, one particular to the game or studio, whatever.

Congrats on the 200th episode of your super(optional b ) show, it's one of my outright favourite things. About Notch, I don't feel like he has an obligation to spend his money on charity but when you have that much money, that much time and seemingly little idea of what to do with either of them, it seems like there's a lot of avenues to help the world given the resources you have available. He doesn't even have to divorce it entirely from what he's done before. Maybe try to make a game that helps the world, whatever. I was kind of annoyed that he said that charity seems like it's just to score points because I personally would feel like it's better to be perceived as fake when trying to help people than to just have the public persona of the millionaire dude with more money than he knows what to do with. Again that's totally my personal feelings, Notch doesn't need to share them at all but it bums me out a bit. ...though admittedly I heard that second hand through the podcast so I can't be too critical of it without exact wording and context.

The reason I don't like using crazy is because it segregates off a large portion of the world as having impaired judgement or ability even though mental illness is a broad and varied concept. Do you consider autism and depression to make people crazy? Some people do, and the word is a way to separate anyone who might be in that category from sensible minded people. Offending people is bad, but the reason I want an alternative word to saying 'you guys' has more to follow with getting my brain away from assuming male as default. It is only one thing, sure, but if I'm not even going to think about what I'm saying I can hardly claim to be making an effort against my biases. Amusingly, I just asked about alternatives for guys a few days ago on Twitter and only dudes replied. Clyde offered folks though so I'm running with that.
-
The issue for me is less about offending individuals and more about allowing my choice of words to further perpetuate the idea that certain groups of people are lesser or undesirable. ie. Words that make those with mental differences out to be defective are not necessarily offending anyone but they reinforce the idea that it's bad to be anything but the mental state considered to be sane.
-
I really need to replace my use of dumb with silly or foolish. It's frustrating how detached your use can be from the source of these words. For a long time I thought twat was a tame word that didn't really mean anything.

The missing in action self awareness never ceases to amaze me.

Yeeeesssss, thanks!

I don't mean you specifically Synth, inherent sexism is just a fact of life for people in general. We can be conscious of it and reduce it so that it affects our decision making less but I don't think it will go away. At least not in the space of a generation. EDIT: Also having years to react to doesn't make it less of a gut reaction unless you regularly sit down to analyse her behaviour and come to a decision about it. The length of time matters less than the fact that your opinion is based on a response to stuff as it happens rather than a specific effort to examine everything closely.

At least for me personally I'm just reading it as general criticism so we're aware of problematic behaviour. Feminist Frequency videos are not explicitly telling game developers "Don't do that" so much as they're highlighting why things they do are problematic so people are more aware of it. I read this thread as largely being the same as that, but you may not see it that way. Also synth, there are parts of that I agree with. The game just... Does not look good visually and has awful character designs that Wu literally did when she was a teenager if I remember right. But bear in mind inherent sexism that might be making you judge her harsher or more suspicious of her just because she's a woman, and woman aren't meant to be assertive public figures. That makes it tricky for me in these situations, I don't feel like my gut response is a fair judgement because I know it's generally unfair even if it's possible it could be 'correct' here.

Does she mean truce between her and him over some previous ill will or is this meant to be a truce to tell other people they can take him out of the 'shitty person' category? I don't see a problem if it's the former, it being her prerogative, but I would be uncomfortable with her trying to declare that for other people. Though yes, I know it's likely a bit of a mix but I'm unsure what she mainly intended. This is quite a shitty presumption to make about someone I barely know and it's totally steeped in several layers of bias but she reminds me of a guy I went to school with who was very pushy on his opinion of what was best. It was mostly to do with stuff like 3D animation just being all round better than 2D because no matter what you can do more in 3D. To him, that was just clearly the case, so he'd push and argue for that idea. I feel like sometimes I see that quality in Wu, the forceful determined certainty that makes her an effective spokesperson for things she cares about but also means that if she's clashing with any aspect of my politics or worldview, it's going to be uncomfortable because she has the same level of certainty with it while I'm clearly going to be sceptical. That doesn't mean she can't hold a different opinion, but it does mean I'm going to be unhappy that she's going to feel like her opinion is The Opinion. ...assuming that I've made a solid judgement of an internet personality I know in passing.

I don't think I've ever completed a pre Gamecube Mario game unless you count one of these exceptions: 1) Playing original Super Mario Bros. on an emulator where I used save states 2) Playing the DS remake of Super Mario 64. 3) Warioland on the Gameboy I enjoyed all of those, Mario just wasn't a gaming presence for my childhood so much. I actually played #3 on that list first and didn't quite know who Mario and Peach were when they showed up at the end, but I think that was partly because of the pixellated graphics...

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
SuperBiasedMan replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
I'd be really interested in an article that tries to compare the revenues of original games and their clones. Except A) That'd be hard to do because judging a clone is tricky, and potentially libelous? If it did come out that per hour you make more money on clones I'd be both depressed and terrified that an article outright told the mobile gaming world that was the case. -
Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
SuperBiasedMan replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
I liked playing the first Half Minute Hero because it only felt grindy when I actually missed the point of the level and ended up power levelling instead of using the boss's weakness against them. And even then the levels were so short that it was a trivial grind that was clearly not designed to make the game feel like an epic saga. Also the writing some nice dumb fun. -
David Lynch's Josh Brolin's Campo Santo's Fire Watch With Me: A Motion Picture Event

I think Steve is gonna provide some Hot Scoops about what the FireWatch does when you equip it after level 12. -
Suddenly imagining an amazing remake of Mean Girls as Mean Gamers.

Also I'm going to be travelling for 7 hours tomorrow, anyone have any general suggestions that haven't come up here?

Oh that totally reminds me there was a great game that really gave a good sense of the Black Lodge atmosphere I played years ago. Anyone know where to get it?

David Lynch's Josh Brolin's Campo Santo's Fire Watch With Me: A Motion Picture Event

Even though I have yet to play it, I also feel like there was probably a spark of their Miasmata discussion in there. Also I like that the IGN headline is a witty clever thing taken from Twin Peaks Rewatch and a tiny part of me hopes Jake wrote the entire electric pun run because with every new line I could hear him leaving in a pregnant pause. -
He also played God of War I think. They give it an oddly clear view in screen.

That's a shame, cyclical narratives are hard in games. You need to either make a ton of content or give people ways to effectively skip repeat stuff. 999 is the only time I've enjoyed the idea.
