Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)
SuperBiasedMan replied to dartmonkey's topic in Video Gaming
It seems to be exactly what I want thus far. A nice tablet that can play games. Assuming they have a good back catalog of ports for me to catch up on and it functions reasonably well as a media device, I'm pretty excited for it. -

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
SuperBiasedMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
It is a desktop, but I probably wont do that because I just recently added a second hard drive from an older desktop into my current one anyway. -
I'm definitely up for not making the theme a generic holiday thing. I get the idea of not wanting to keep with the titles all the time, but the winter one was less inspiring personally. If we want alternative we could do something Thumbsy though not quite the actual titles? For instance, someone made a fake title generator from the last jam: https://dissentingsheep.itch.io/generated-thumbs

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

Come to think of it the hard drive actually has a detachable base it plugs into (it's a Seagate GoFlex if that means anything). So when buying a new one, I could possibly get a matching one to at least salvage the storage itself. -

I got a SMART tool and it said my drive was "Good", you can see for yourself here in case there's something I missed in the dump of info. It's obviously now unreliable at the very least. :/ I did already grab anything necessary off of it as soon as it was working enough to do so. This was mostly me trying to find out how to identify whether the problem was fixable software stuff or actually broken hardware. Seems like it's the later, thanks for the help folks! -
There's problems with this idea too, but what about team matchmaking? Like, forget it being a partial lottery, maybe the organisers could look through a list of people, their skills and preferences and try to patch together groups from that. "Oh, this artist wants to work with someone on a 2D game. Let's pair them with the Gamemaker dev" This obviously puts work on organisers, and you can't match everyone perfectly. But it would probably give the most suitable groupings compared to random/semi-random approaches. I think no matter what, groups should be non mandatory. Just something people opt into if that's what they want. EDIT: Also, is the group question asking about my specific preferences? It's not clear, but I'm guessing that's what it is.

I did that when it wasn't working yesterday and had the same trouble at the time. Seems to be fine with that machine right now. -

I have an external hard drive that's definitely on the fritz. Twice now it's randomly been failing to show up as an actual drive. Appearing to be "unidentified" in disk management. I managed to temporarily reconnect it by waiting a day and retrying. It was denying me access at first. I got in by changing the permissions to "Everyone" and it worked for today but I'd be surprised if that solved the actual problem. I ran a full disk check, by right clicking the drive, going to Properties > Tools > Check now... I ticked both options ('Automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors') and let it run. But it concluded by saying there were no problems. I don't... particularly believe that. So what should I do to further try and identify the issue? I backed up all the data, so I can format the drive if necessary but I'd like to know what's actually going on before trying to fix it. Does anyone have any ideas of how to diagnose further? -
Ooh this sounds really interesting, cheers. Gonna cherry pick from your backlog. For the lazy here's the RSS links from their site: Podcast RSS Podcast RSS via SoundCloud Site RSS

I was also thrown off when I realised that this Nick was the Nick who travelled back from 2026 to politically assassinate Donald Trump. -
What to make of problematic elements in older films
SuperBiasedMan replied to Erkki's topic in Movies & Television
I mean, they also might just flat out be sexist enough that they don't think it's a problem in the movie. Not even that they're forgiving it or anything, just that they don't really think there is any. -
Don't worry. They're just a joke, no-one could ever vote for them.

What to make of problematic elements in older films
SuperBiasedMan replied to Erkki's topic in Movies & Television
Of course, but there's a big difference to discounting the merit of something and saying "the problematic elements in this are bad enough that it shouldn't be on 'Everyone Must Watch' lists." -
What to make of problematic elements in older films
SuperBiasedMan replied to Erkki's topic in Movies & Television
Yeah I consider a classic to be a film that's older, but still recommended viewing for a modern audience. In that sense, I understand thinking "This film is too sexist for me to want to recommend to people as modern viewing, but as a film with interesting elements I consider it worthwhile, if problematic." -

A recurring issue too is people thinking that it's alright to have problematic classics because we "got passed that sexism, racism etc." anyway, even though we obviously haven't. -

Nick Breckon has streamed this a ton, and it looks great! Here's the first 8 hours of Nick's streaming, but there's more after this (not currently in the playlist): -
Also as a functional phrase, it's like saying "over" on a walkie talkie so the players know it's their time to step in. Also Austin's new (currently unnamed) Vice gaming cast has started. It's him and Patrick, twice weekly. No proper feed yet but an episode is up: https://vicegamingsnewpodcast.simplecast.fm/

I can't believe Hillary was hoarding her phoenix downs all along, ugh.

What's funny is, the "What do you do?" thing is a specific piece of advice from the Dungeon World book that Austin clearly latched onto as a good framing. Having listened to all of the show and then reading through the book, I could see parts that Austin either already identified with or actively picked up from the book as good ideas. It made me extra excited to run the game.

They specifically also switched games because the players had trouble figuring out what to do. Their most recent series called Marielda could be worth trying out, since they seem pretty comfortable with that system from early on.
