  1. I had a random thought about movies

A point well taken tycho. There's bound to be someone involved in the movie somewhere that is an abuser and we just don't know it. I can only act on the information I have, like you said. This is kind of what I was trying to get at with this: Knowing that spending money on the projects of people I find detestable helps prop up their careers and allows them to continue working and having the visibility to find and groom victims to abuse. I want them to be denied the privilege of making profitable art and no longer have the power of fame.
  2. I had a random thought about movies

Personally, I refuse to participate in spending my money in a way that supports men (it's almost always men) who are monsters. I refuse to see Polanski's or Woody Allen's movies, I refuse to listen to R. Kelly's music. I refuse to see movies based off of Orson Scott Card's books knowing that he's a bigot who uses his money to fund anti-LGBT campaigns. This line has to be drawn differently for everyone. For example once a person is dead, consuming the art they make no longer contributes to their wealth and ability to abuse more people. I'm much more likely to consume the art of someone problematic if they're no longer alive, but I can't in good conscious go see a Woody Allen movie knowing that it's going to make him more money and get him more movie deals so that he can continue to be rich and famous and do things like prey upon his adoptive children. My only request to people who continue to consume the art of monsters ask themselves the question of 'is my enjoyment of this thing worth the potential ramifications of this person's continued success to me?' and the answer of that question may very well be 'yes' but I just want people to at least ask the question to themselves. There's so much art in the world that we can never hope to get to all of it, so I think why not allow a creator's real world actions impact my decision making? They are just helping me narrow down my options to things I don't feel guilty about liking.
  3. [Dev Log] SHADOW of SOMETHING

The pinnacle of critique from 'Red Pill Addict'
  4. Movie/TV recommendations

I watched I, Tonya on Saturday. What a well acted, gripping movie about cycles of abuse, classism, the 90's and delusions of grandeur. I highly recommend it, and I highly recommend the 30 for 30 doc about the same topic The Price of Gold. I also saw Paddington 2 on Sunday. It was an extremely warm, heartfelt, well constructed movie. Its message of "being kind and polite is powerful, and will be rewarded in ways you can never anticipate" is clearly communicated and never comes off as 'and you should be nice because then people owe you' kind of way. It's a joy to look at, Hugh Grant as the washed up actor villain is extremely good, and I particularly enjoyed the Charlie Chaplin gag.
  5. The Asian Film Thread

You should watch Dabangg which is the only Bollywood movie I've ever seen, and is also one of the greatest movies I've ever seen
  6. The Asian Film Thread

Studio Ghibli, and Miyazaki in particular have some true bangers. I would recommend Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro as 3 great and pretty varied of his films. I know virtually nothing about Thai cinema, but I do know that Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior is one of the most fun movies I've ever watched.
  7. Designer Notes 35: Manveer Heir

it might be because he's always calling out to his wife Debra. I can see the comparison.
  8. ugh so embarrassing, git gud (this is true for me as well, and is probably only snoopy tennis & pokemon red for the game boy) edit: (oh god, i just remembered that I had a complete paper prima guide for pokemon red that i used. strike pokemon red and replace it with pokemon the trading card game the video game for game boy)
  9. Favorite/Best Game Trailers

i really love this song and i really love dropsy the clown and i really love that trailer says a lot thematically about what the game is about! there is no words, written or spoken in the entire game, and this gives you an amazing primer on what to expect
  10. there were lots of cheat codes for console games. there just weren't very many games on the PC that interested me as a kid and were too hard. Maybe like SimCity 3000.

  12. I have not played Getting Over It, deliberately so. I couldn't really articulate a specific reason why either, but I think @aoanla is hitting on something very true for me as someone who is also bad at most games. It doesn't feel novel to watch progress slip away in a game. I think there's a fetishization of this feeling by people who are good at games (highly acclaimed examples include: the Dark Souls souls disappearing if you die before completing your corpse run, this game, cuphead, and an overall love of 'hard games.') I experience this in virtually every game that doesn't have an easy mode though, and like aoanla basically never finished a game as a child because they were too hard. I basically didn't finish a game until I was in high school and kingdom hearts 2 had an easy mode where the first one didn't and I got stuck and never finished. Here's a list of some games that were too hard for me to ever finish: spyro for PS1 legend of zelda: link's awakening for the game boy legend of zelda for the NES Kingdom Hearts Final Fantasy IX Rugrats: Search for Reptar for PS1 Persona Q These are all games that I wanted to continue playing but were simply too difficult for me to ever finish. I think the spelunky point is particularly interesting and apt though, because despite never getting past the ice caves in that game, it was always fun and exciting to see new things & new interactions, even if I wasn't good at executing what the game wanted me to do. thanks for posting here aoanla, because this helped give me some insight into why I was pretty actively uninterested in this game as an exercise in frustration and futility. It can't give me anything that other games don't already. I appreciate that it works for lots of people, but I don't think it will succeed at its goal with me as a player.
  13. Star Wars Episode 8

ah yes, the real victim here
  14. Movie/TV recommendations

i know this isn't what you asked, but as a native english speaker i prefer to watch english language things with english subtitles, except for comedies. comedic timing is ruined by subtitles because you can read ahead to the joke and ruin it for yourself. I watch basically everything else with english subtitles though.
  15. Star Wars Episode 8

i liked it and it made me laugh, and i'll probably never watch it again. the iron visual joke made me laugh really hard.
  16. Idle Cook Club 2 - Neither for here, nor to go

@dibs i highly recommend puppy chow as a gluten free chrimbo treat!
  17. GOTY of the Year

The more of Yakuza 0 I play the more sure I am that this is my #2 for this year. Both of these games are some of my favorite I've ever played period. I am constantly re-charmed by Yakuza. it's so earnestly joyful to play. I think I would go so far as to bump 2 games out of my top 7 fave games of all time to add these two. (that list was, in no particular order, Hatoful Boyfriend, Harvest Moon: FoMT, WoW: WotLK, Dropsy, Tokyo Mirage Sessions: FE, Pokemon Red & The Sims. I would bump the Sims & Pokemon for Collar X Malice & Yakuza 0) I am absolutely head over heels for these two games.
  18. Idle Cook Club 2 - Neither for here, nor to go

I want to make corn dogs for this prompt. I haven't forgotten about it! Also I made puppy chow for christmas time to share with my d&d group and had leftovers that I brought into work, and literally not a single californian knew what puppy chow is. The one guy I know from Illinois knew what it was and was pumped. I did not realize this was a regional food.
  19. Animal Crossing Pocket Camp

Yeah, I haven't spent any money and the game has been extremely generous with tickets. i haven't spent tickets on speeding things up really, which is why i have ~170 tickets right now. I also bought the super cute floral van paint job. I am at level 40 and still jamming on this game pretty hard. I've unlocked all the animals that are currently in the game, but haven't invited ~1/3 - ~1/4 of them to my campsite yet.
  20. Net Neutrality

Yeah, at least one California senator is going to move to get net neutrality in place at a state level too http://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/365058-california-state-senator-to-propose-statewide-net-neutrality-laws Which is why it's a good idea to take a moment to make sure you're registered for your state and local elections. PLEASE REGISTER TO VOTE IF YOU'RE A US CITIZEN PLEASE VOTE IN EVERY ELECTION, FROM SCHOOL BOARD TO PRESIDENT. PLEASE. If you live in california you can vote by mail! It's awesome! I highly recommend it! You can sign up to do it online! (thank you forever to @tabacco for telling me about this) http://registertovote.ca.gov/
  21. Animal Crossing Pocket Camp

I would have assumed that you really like AC given your KK Slider avatar. Lots of people don't like this version of the game. Here's a whole piece about game designers' reactions to it. They're largely pretty negative! https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/311352/What_devs_are_saying_about_the_design_of_Animal_Crossing_Pocket_Camp.php I think what any one person likes about Animal Crossing is deeply personal. Some people like decorating their houses the most. Some people like designing clothes. Some people get super into flower breeding. Some people just really like sending letters to their animal friends in town. My favorite part of the games are the animal friends, so I really love getting to see more animal friends than I ever got to see in the DS or 3DS games.

  23. anime

Your Name in January is the hotly anticipated sequel to Your Lie in April
  24. Recently completed video games

We played 2 more chapters of yakuza 0 this weekend and this game charms me at literally every turn.
  25. I just want to go on record that I think that Tycho belongs in jail for this forum thread name though.
