  1. Welcome to Wizard Jam 4!

I put a call out for a 2D artist in the team building thread! Check it out and let me know if you're interested or want to talk about it more. I'm sure others need 2D art too if you don't like my project.
  2. DISHONORED 2: MISS HONORED

Well, I got it on PS4, and it does work just fine so far, but I did have to download an update for 90+ minutes.... So, it isn't perfect either.
  3. DISHONORED 2: MISS HONORED

I barely remembered to pre-order in time to get the free definitive edition. My physical copy arrives today! Psyched!!
  4. WJ4 Team Builder

Hello all! I think I have my game concept as solid as it can be without starting. I am looking for a few people to help out! I wrote a lengthy thing at the link below, so read on if you're interested. I know some people don't want to know game details ahead of time, so I am keeping it somewhat hidden. Here are the basics: Cool Blob Future Arcade game where you try to get a high score Needs: 2D artist, 2 tracks of music, Cool emotes, Sounds If you are OK with arcade-style games and want to help out with one of the above, read my blathering description here! Also, if you want to help and have good ideas to make this better, let me know! EDIT: @BadMisty is on board for SFX! @badatstuff is on board for music! (your username doesn't have to have "bad" in it to be involved!)

I am no artist, but I keep needing to make game assets for my little projects, and I always fall back on pixel art. I decided to start actually trying to get better at doing this as I go. The best way to get better is to practice, so join me as I try to do (the occasional ?) Pixel Dailies topic as sent by the @Pixel_Dailies twitter account. I want to post what I create in this thread so that I can get some constructive criticism. Maybe you will post yours just to show off! Doesn't matter to me! Post your own, criticize mine, whatever! I am going to keep practicing and posting the not-too-embarrassing items.
  6. Pixel Daily with Me

Yeah, I can see that. I tried that for a while, but it kept looking banded. I will try some more...
  7. Chillsim VR

I like this idea a lot! I also like the environment you've got going so far... although "hand drawn" as you say, it is definitely very evocative and inviting.
  8. Pixel Daily with Me

I have been making a lot of sprites and tiles for a revision to the GBJAM game I worked on, so I haven't had the gumption to do a lot of this. I started this one on Saturday and poked around on it a little more today. Had a lot of fabric futzing, but I think the shading turned out alright, especially at a small resolution. I realize that Owl Boy is a specific character, but I made up my own boy who is an owl... 11/5/2016 #OwlBoy

I do really appreciate the feedback. I will try to focus on emphasizing depth more in my next ones. I really struggled with that wolf way more than it would appear, probably. First of all, making it look like a wolf and not a cat was harder than anticipated! Also, adding shading without making it look like it was smiling was extremely challenging. I agree, it still looks flat, though. Thanks again! I will take any and all input. Want to make things that look at least good enough to be workable.

    Loosely following today's prompt. 11/3/2016 #playing_card
  11. [DevLog] EverEnding

Everything is looking really nice! I like the character design and the way she moves. It all looks very graceful.
  12. Pixel Daily with Me

Haven't been too inspired to do something off the wall lately with these. Still using the topic to practice different aspects of shading and highlighting while trying to avoid things that are no-nos, apparently. On this one, I realize the floor board and toy chest are probably too close in color, but I wanted to be picky with the shadows and see if it still worked. It works for me right now, but when I look at it again in a couple of days I might feel differently. 11/2/2016 #plush_bear
  13. Pixel Daily with Me

I tried to keep today's simple and fast(ish) again. I focused on the lighting and the colors of this somewhat tricky geometry. I think it turned out alright. I clearly just threw the background together so it wasn't just in the middle of nowhwere, although what's there isn't much better. 11/1/2016 #hoverbike
  14. Pixel Daily with Me

I am definitely not thrilled with this one, but I'm just posting to show that I am struggling with some "simple" things too. This should have been easy, but it wasn't. I learned a lot in the process of getting it to this point. I don't know if this could be much less exciting to me, but here we are, a symmetrical wolf head... 10/31/2016 #wolf I figured out a lot with shading and fur this time around. Also that the way we picture wolves in logos and things don't really look like a real wolf. Does mine look like a real or fake wolf? I am not so sure any more.
  15. Pixel Daily with Me

Thanks for all the opinions and support. I really am taking it all to heart. I skipped yesterday's challenge and just now started working on today's (wolf), which I am trying to keep simple. I will probably post it tomorrow, but we shall see! Again, thanks guys!
  16. Pixel Daily with Me

I agree! Think I was in over my head, but all of this probably is. Even if I don't get this guy quite right, it is a good learning experience. Thanks so much for the input! I might try tweaking it some more...
  17. Pixel Daily with Me

Yeah, I am kind of torn on this situation. I like how some parts pop a bit more, but I kind of liked keeping it all super drab too. When you popped the colors, I like parts of it, but some of it is now too contrasting... Probably a good middle ground in there... (at least to my tastes). Understood... did the change I made help any? I am pretty unsure about it all now...

My original idea was that he would have a flat face... because that was creepy to me, but that amongst many other angular, highlighting, and shading issues make me happy to trash that idea to make it look less jarring, as you say. I took a stab at some facial shading. Think this helps?
  21. Whatever z_bill's working on [Devlog]

Glad to see you're still working on this! It is looking really good still!
  22. Pixel Daily with Me

Time to just post today's and move on. I worked on this way too long and there are parts that still drive me nuts. I am just sticking it here to see if anyone can point out what is really wrong with it (and help me figure out why...) 10/29/2016 #bug

I agree on the color restraints. I've been trying to not just use whatever and keep it limited anyway. I've been doing some reading up on color theory and pixel art and I'm going to try to incorporate some of that into whatever I do next. I agree the symmetry is a bit bleh, but I was thinking if this is NES, this guy could be made from four 16x16 tiles (ignoring any tiles per row/column limitation or whatever). I decided to put just a slight light source above him since I was so limited on shades. Thanks for the input!
  24. Pixel Daily with Me

Well, today's topic wasn't particularly inspiring to me. I should have just skipped, but I am kind of hooked on this for now. Since the topic is "owl" and I didn't have any interesting ideas, I figured I'd just make an owl, but limit myself. I again squeezed it into 32x32, but I limited myself to the NES palette. This became quite the challenge. There is only one true brown-brown in the thing, and no good dark tans that aren't all yellowy. Anyway, this forced me to imply shading with accentuating a few other things. I think it worked out OK. Also, the lack of grays is also a challenge. Finding a nighttime background wasn't easy. I went with a roof due to the colors available, basically. I also played with dithering on the clouds in the background but it just looked funky. I think that might work with practice, though. I posted at 3x and 4x. Maybe I should post at 2x too so it really blurs out... maybe just squint? Thanks again for the input! 10/28/2016 #Owl
