  1. E3 2015

A "something for everyone" sort of E3, lots of things I don't care about but a few I'm really looking forward to. Mario Maker, The Last Guardian, Firewatch, Cuphead topping the list for me.
  2. For anyone seeking the drunken, messy GiantBomb at this E3, I think the mix of guests has been really good this time around. You get Lorne Lanning and Robin Hunicke at one end, and drunken Dave Lang and John Vignocchi at the other. Nothing wrong with the press, but more developer guests is great in my view. Normally with developer interviews at E3 its very official and bullet point-ey.
  3. Life is Strange: Tween Peaks

I played the first episode yesterday and this seems to be one of those games that I can point out a hundred different things I don't like about it but still come away having enjoyed it. Rewinding time to undo a story-changing choice is dumb and undermines every decision I make, half of things people say are from the nineties and the other half will be dated within a year, there is far too much talking going on inside the main character's head (the visual cues are well done, the character doesn't need to explain everything I am seeing), every time I make a critical decision the main character comments on it and guilts me into changing my mind, the list just keeps on going... ..But its still kind of compelling, the characters feel like actual human beings despite everything that comes out of their mouths, the off to the sides conversations can be really sweet even if all of the main story is really dumb and because of this I am still keen to hop into the second chapter. Strange...
  4. In video form also. Worth checking out the segment with Robin Hunicke at the end, there was some very interesting VR/AR discussion there.
  5. E3 2015

They had it at the EA press conference at last year's E3, just as "New Mass Effect" with a bunch of in-engine test footage. You could argue it said more about the game than Bioware did this year.
  6. E3 2015

Just an in-engine "visual target" trailer and a blog post with a couple more details. Most notably that the character in the trailer is not who you will play as. Nothing on multiplayer as far as I can see.
  7. E3 2015

I'm sure other outlets will talk about noteworthy news afterwords but I don't think any other big sites will host the stream or do a liveblog. Kind of like that Metal Gear trailer Geoff Keighly had on the YouTube stream yesterday, people covered it after the fact but were pretty respectful in giving them the exclusive they earned, as far as I could see at least. This PC Gaming show just seems kind of weird. It has AMD, Microsoft, Twitch, and even developers as "sponsors" for the event. He who pays the most gets the most airtime? Hopefully not, that would be a really weird bidding war.
  8. E3 2015

Its the PC Gaming Show put on by PC Gamer at 5PM PDT. There hasn't been a lot of coverage from other gaming sites as its technically a "rival" doing their own show, and I'm sure they put in some work to get exclusive announcements and such that other outlets don't want to step on.
  9. E3 2015

Reading between the lines, Reggie basically said at the start of the Nintendo video that their are in a transition period before mobile and NX comes around so all their stuff is pretty safe and samey. They seem to be doubling down on old franchises, doing a lot of Amiibo stuff and there is a lot of similarity in their game design. For example: The clothing system they touted in the new 3DS Zelda? Both Mario Golf World Tour, and Splatoon are built on the same concept of character progress being attached to clothing. If the games are good, no one minds because a good Nintendo game is usually really great, but if the quality of their games isn't great over the next year, I think they will very quickly run from the fire that is Wii U, even faster than they are currently. Which is kind of a shame. Nintendo lagging behind the past couple of years has produced some amazing games by the seat of their pants, but Nintendo with an action plan of where they are going in the future can be overconfident to the point of delusion, just as they were in the awful 2007 to 2011 years.
  10. Interesting post from Jake on the Santo blog about how they put together their stage presentation for the Playstation announcement. Its a shame a lot of this work didn't come across on the stream as they just showed the trailer fullscreen, but I imagine it was pretty cool in the auditorium.
  11. The Last Guardian

I think the (I'm assuming real time, actually working) gameplay looks comparable or better than the pre-rendered in-engine trailer did from '09. So I guess its kind of awesome that the game looks as good as their initial target trailer, which is a win for me! I think it looks gorgeous. Though I still find the lighting to be a little blown out in Team Ico games, Its sometimes soft and dreamlike, but mostly a little too harsh.

First half hour of Nintendo: Mario Maker. Second half hour: Amiibo.
  13. E3 2015

Playstation at E3 2015: "We may have some games for you to play in 2016...but they look really cool!"
  14. E3 2015

If Firewatch turns up on the Playstation stage we can finally have a console war!
  15. DISHONORED 2: MISS HONORED

Just checked out the sale on Steam. The price of the all the DLC total is close to double that of the Game of the Year edition, which is really dumb since I already own the base game. Steam is weird sometimes.
  16. E3 2015

It was all hololens. You can project it on to a wall through the headset (just emulating a flatscreen TV) or you can view a cross section of your world in 3D on a flat surface (a table). When on a table you seem to act more like a god figure, marking areas for other people (who are playing on xbox, pc, surface) and shooting lightning. To be honest it seemed like a pretty tech demo for now, and a cool way to view creations.
  17. DISHONORED 2: MISS HONORED

What are the general opinions of the first game's DLC? I played the main game, but none of the extras. They are all included in the Steam sale currently and I'm kind of tempted if they pop up on a flash sale. Anything worth playing?
  18. E3 2015

People go crazy for free stuff, regardless of how crap it is! Remember that year when Microsoft gave everyone in the audience a free Xbox 360 slim and all the press tried to play it cool and pretend that it wasn't a big deal and that they were all super professional? That didn't happen, they were super giddy. But in all seriousness, having loads of fans at the Bethesda event was a great choice, they lifted every announcement, and I'm sure it looks good to the money men sitting in the audience.
  19. DISHONORED 2: MISS HONORED

Woo, didn't hear that one, that's seems like a really good fit. Time to go back and read her Embed With with Harvey Smith!
  20. E3 2015

The only game that really interests me from Bethesda is Dishonoured 2, so its a shame that it was shown the least of all. Despite that, they put on a very professional press conference and its good to see Fallout releasing this year, though unlikely I will play it.
  21. E3 2015

Microsoft at the Oculus event: "Hey do you want to play Xbox One games in VR?" "Umm...sure...I guess" "Great! All you need is an Xbox One, a powerful PC with Windows 10, and an Oculus Rift to play them in a crappy looking virtual cinema...but you get a controller for free!"
  22. The Last Guardian

Dedicating yourself to seeing every nook and cranny is great and cool but people can go too far in defense of a game they got into. I find it insufferable when people who are really in to a game criticize those who didn't enjoy it when played at a more surface level because they "just didn't get it" or they "didn't play the 20 hour side-quest that makes everything click into place". I for one adore Shadow of the Colossus, and will happily call it one of my favorite games, but have no desire to play any extra content past the title-to-credit experience.
  23. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Had my best match ever on the new map today, just shy of 1800 points with the win bonus. All the areas are super wide so if you give yourself a good amount of coverage there is ample opportunity for sneaking swim attacks. The grate walkways are death though, I almost never go up there, but I think that's just my style of playing. I always have the left trigger held and regularly dive under for short breaks from shooting. Also, it has taken me way too long to come to this conclusion but whenever I see a friendly player about to spawn on me, I completely stop advancing if I'm in a safe-ish area. Both to support them as they land and because I now know how helpful it is to have a buddy in close proximity for flanking attacks. Two players near each other are deadly.
  24. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Yeah, I have to agree on Port Mackerel. A good charger is still fairly rare but if they are really good playing on that map then its game over. I think the main problem I have with the map is that the flanking lanes from the start area don't extend out of your own third-ish of the map. The only really reason to use them is to mop up at the start, and offer no tactical advantage otherwise. The maps with good external lanes, like Walleye Warehouse, and Blackbelly Skatepark, offer the possibility to flank from different angles, which Port Mackerel doesn't. In other news, apparently I was desperate for a good multiplayer game, as I have managed to blast to max level in 10 days with completely upgraded 3-star gear. Playing a game this much is extremely rare for me, and I can't tell if I'm sick of it or still desperate for more. Kind of tempted to jump on tonight just to see what the new gear is, even if I don't play. Christ Splatoon! What have you done to me? I want a cool new hat.
