  1. Pokemon GO

I don't have a phone plan atm + lazy so I haven't played it yet but my friends are. I hear a good tip is to download your area's google map to save on data. Also the poke lures are kinda creepy. Some friends were placing them around and random people were coming up to them while they were still wandering around. Something like that is probably going to be used to lure people away to mug them at some point.
  2. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

Guess I'm talking at cross purposes now. It might still be because I'm tired but that's not coming through to me, but I think I do get the spirit of what you're talking about. The kind of Raymond Carver vibe; people trapped in their own conventions, masculinity, etc. Edit: What I mean is that I saw the outlines but for me the text didn't fill it in too well for me but that might be for the delivery that I've come to expect/assume from those kinds of stories. It's a flavour issue I mean.
  3. In a rush for hard drive space I think I'm finally putting down The Witcher 3. Like DA:I before it I've found a tonne of fun in it but despite the rather splendid stories general combat just starts to really drag after a while. Goodnight, Sweet Prince.
  4. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

I don't feel like he has much of a voice right now. His PoV comes across as quite clean & organised for (my assumption) bloke who goes off to the men's club/pub on the same days of every week. I was going to suggest more contractions and colloquialisms even in his inner voice. The other thing I'm struggling to phrase is that his inner voice rattles off a lot of detail about friends, places, things; but maybe not the right details? I'm not sure if it's just a personal flavour thing though. I guess an example could be here "Now, I’ve never met her, but when we first started drinking together Trevor talked about her a lot, what they did, where they went, but things had changed as of recent and he talked about her less." and instead there could be something like "Back in the day you could hardly shut up Trev over the stories he told of what him and his wife would get up to. I never met his lady but she seemed like a remarkable woman. Lately though I've been wondering if they're having a bit of trouble. The tight look on Trev's face (as I ask) doesn't look to be proving my suspicions wrong." Anyway just my thoughts. Oh one more thing. Did you intentionally choose a passive voice? I assumed it was a style thing you were going for but as you're also talking about trying to movie into a first person pov and that you're pretty ingrained in 3rd person writing; you might not be deliberately muting the action by using passive voice? Sorry if that doesn't come out right it's been a long day.
  5. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

Thank you that's really sweet. I haven't seriously written, or felt sure in my writing for years. Currently I'm tied between a song, a type of user manual, a children's book, or something of all three. Whatever this ends up as it needs to be warm.
  6. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

Hey I'be been really enjoying these! I actually really enjoyed yours twmac it felt really touching and reminded me a little of my own experiences travelling and growing up. It was neat seeing how yours grew SBM. I had a lot more sense of place in the final work which ended up supporting the tone more. Wooden's thing was a nice perspective flip and it did feel like a properly Sci Fi short story. Stapler was certainly the most fun for me out of all of ours. I was thinking that Todd was the secret boss for a short while but then you went into deals with eldritch space powers territory which was nice. Actually your story and Wooben's are kinda similar. Not in a bad way. Just in a way that my head canon has the new guy from Stapler crossing dimensions into one of Wooben's salt monsters.

I've put mine up now. I know there were some changes to be made but I've been too busy not having exams any more to go back and do 'em. Space Boss, Ze Lord of Space
  8. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

Well that tone in my piece came because I wanted to try and write this story in a non-scifi way. My first actual idea would have been a video game-ass video game company going "What do we call our game?" "Space Boss the Lord of Space FUCK YEAH!" and then just kinda going on from there. Instead what I actually did was find the quiet part of a boozey night and sat down to write something melancholic. Which is what my stream of consciousness inner voice absolutely used to be when I wrote a lot more things like this about 5+ years ago only while depressed and detached, but I didn't do that this time because I left that headspace behind about 3 years ago. I just started with the tone and a mental image of where I was writing and how it'd feel to be there. I also forced myself to describe my surroundings because I often fall into the trap of making qualitative statements in these pieces without connecting them to a place which makes them even more floaty than they are already. For the surroundings I just wrote what I knew; between a boarding school, philosophy weekends, and a university hall I'm just really familiar with kinda institutionalised, very samey cookie cutter bunk rooms. Usually in some maintained but run down place that used to be run by nuns, or priests at some point. They were all last refurbished in 1994 at a time when fit-for-purpose institutional, interior decorating in NZ reflected the 1970's anywhere else. Anyway looking back on the writing I'm actually still doing sci-fi; It's just more Children of Men than Culture. For my next things I've actually given myself a few challenges. One: to make something that's actually bright and bubbly. Two: to turn something that doesn't sound like sci-fi into sci-fi. Three: to be done with sci-fi for a little while. I also need more practice at writing two distinct characters that talk with each other since overwhelmingly I write first person stream of consciousness that mostly just refers to events and other people in the past tense. : P

Oh man I totally forgot about that song. It's so much fun.
  10. DOOM

I've been having fun with the game but it crashes for me a lot. I'm up to the latest Nvidia driver which fixed the issue where the Bethesda loading screen used 100% of my cpu but I still have loads of moments when a door opens and I crash or I reload and the game drops to 2 frames a second or some other weird thing happens and the only fix is to restart the program and hope it doesn't happen again within the next 15 minutes which it does. A lot.

I've had this song stuck in my head lately but I haven't really heard it since I was 8.
  12. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

Thanks I'll look into it when I next have the energy W/r/t Butt's it seems like I've flipped in my head where sentence points that have 'But' should be killed and started with the new sentence. I think I still have a hangover from when my writing was more influenced by Raymond Carver so I tend to still write in short, simple sentences at times. I also just like the flow in my head when I start the new lines with that conjunction. Re-reading it after you pointed that out, I think I've overused it so when I do another pass i'll be sure to alter some of them. I'm not sure if I'll use 'however'. I'll probably just rework them. I've had a pretty rough working relationship with grammar. I grew up learning english in an environment where people were rather fussy about grammar, but after years of forums, William S. Burroughs, Raymond Carver, and a few others I'm just riffing off my own in-house style at this point. Originally the character never went back to the note after the first in quotes line. I could see why and where he could go back to reading it and it might make for a better story and use of the letter.
  13. Pathfinder: The Low Moon Guild

Well hey it's been fun. Certainly added fun to my week.
  14. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

How are the stories going peeps? Think I have another one to play with.
  15. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Found this while looking around articles for Kamasi. It feels so nice. Kind of like Battles, kind of like Tame Impala. The new album by The Kills has been fun too. Has a little bit of an XX vibe running through it too.
  16. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

Here's my first draft http://pastebin.com/XdNzwYaV It's been a while since I wrote anything. But this is kinda close to a style I used to write in so it's nice that I can still do it.It could probably use a bit of work tense, grammar, and placement wise. But I tend to play around with that. I could have done something lighter but I aimed away from sci fi and decided to write drunk at night. Which is the breeding ground for this kind of tone from me. Anyway critique and enjoy, or not
  17. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I'm still really picky about what jazz I like but I thought I'd finally give Kamasi Washington a try and holy fuck I can't get this album out of my head. It's been ages since I've had one of those so it's a great feeling.
  18. I guess since I wasn't around for the glory days of multiplayer for Quek so all I really have to go off is the play styles I learn from the few people who still play Quake Live or Reflex that I meet these days. Also I never played Prey but it still sort of feels like a modern take on what Quake did (at least what Quake 4 was doing) and space traversal was a big part of that. So some kind of densely layered shooter that allows for non-standard movement could be really welcome.
  19. A Song Of Ice And Fire

They feel like two alternative universes at this point. The show has tried to write their own endings for some fan theories but by doing so they'll probably end up subverted in the books.
  20. When did a 20" tv become too small?
  21. Movie/TV recommendations

I finally saw Tangerine. That is just the best movie I've seen in forever. We saw Starship Troopers 2 in the same night and while not as well produced as the Paul Verhoven movie I think it was almost every dumb thing it needed to be. Although some of the stock characters could have been sketched in a little stronger.
  22. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

In a town I've never been to Is a place you'd never swim I hear they once had quite the plan Now they just throw it in! Poop Water! New Mexico! They burned the dump They blew the pump and it just goes on in Poop Water! New Mexico! When the council ran they'd quite the plan! But now they have to swim
  23. I'd settle for them adding cooldown timers to ability descriptions. Praise the Diggle Gods!
  24. wow 70 euro? shit ummm maybe that's the price of the collector's edition? I know that they put that face first on all the blizzard store fronts at least.
  25. I think I know about 30 of my steam friend who have it now even if I don't have their b.net id's. I guess there's about 10 thumbs who talk about it in slack and probably have it now on top of that.
