  1. WIZARD JAM 5 // Welcome Thread

I wanted to add here, the team building threads only work if you, and anyone else wanting to join a team, is willing to reach out and ask the others to be on a team. As organizers, and as a community, in the past we have tried to figure out if jammers would want the organizers to be "hands-on" with team building. We never really got the impression that a hands on method would be the correct approach to take, so for now it's hands off. We usually have some after jam threads to discuss changes to this approach, always looking to improve! Thanks for setting up the threads Dino!
  2. Max Ides

I think I had a forty of Max ides once.
  3. That's a great illustration.
  4. Ranking the Films of the Coen Bros.

I've only seen about 1/3 of their body of work, and pretty well thoroughly enjoyed everyone I've seen. Can I ask though, what makes a Coen Bros. film a Coen Bros. film?
  5. Hey, if you are a regular around here there's a chance you played my Winter Wizard Jam entry Shtone Hemge. [Webpage | Itchio | Wiz Jam Thread] Shtone Hemge is a comedy physics game where you help a group of druids construct a monument. Project Stonehenge will encompass taking the ideas of the the Shtone Hemge prototype and expanding them to full game, chocked full of content, and sold on Steam. The druids and Stonehenge will still be there, but there are so many more monuments to construct! Help Egyptians build a pyramid. Help Romans build the Colosseum. Help ____ build _____. You get it? Why Project Stonehenge? Shtone Hemge got some good feedback. Members of the community here seemed to enjoy what the prototype contained. It was blogged by FreeIndieGa.me. At Christmas, my girlfriend's father played through it about ten times before figuring out he couldn't get his score much better. I know that's a fairly small body of feedback, and maybe it's tough to be convinced that it constitutes enough of a foundation to base a commercial project off of. But, in my head, Shtone Hemge was meant to be so much more. When I was conceptualizing the prototype I had lofty ideas of multiplayer features, I really wanted to make a game you and a friend could play together, and laugh together while playing. This means split screen. This means pass-the-controller hot seat. This could even mean co-op or head to head modes. I wanted a game that had a tight scoring system, that would convince you to show off your score and mastery. I wanted a game full of surprises you couldn't help but tell your friend to check out. I have experience making comedy physics games. I have a lot of experience playing the couch friendly multiplayer games. Games like Starwhal, Mount Your Friends, and Gangbeasts. I can definitely take a stab at making something that captures the comedic value of game physics. What are the Next Steps? Greenlight is the first major hurdle. I figure to do this, I want to polish up the content found in the prototype build, to have a demo that can help convince people to vote. This means a new UI (see the gif below) and a split screen mode. What Happens Beyond That? There's a lot I want to do with respect to how the game is displayed. Pull the stone arches in to a circle. Have the camera circle and give you a final look at your amazing monument. As a goal, I'd like ten scenarios to be in the game at launch, 10 different monuments in other words. I want to make the scoring system work a bit different, or at least a bit more transparently. I think having a three star system for each scenario would make the game much more engaging as a single player game. Also, infer from that, the scenarios will probably be unlocked in some sequence, again, to engage a solo player. Further down the road, more monuments, more modes, mutators to diversify the fun, it's open ended. Can You Help Me Out? There are 2 problems I'm struggling with. First, if you played Shtone Hemge, you will remember you are judged by a pantheon of gods, including Sanic Hegehog, John Cena, and forum members Dibs and Lu. Fun times for the jam, starts to make less sense if you see that on Steam (sorry Dibs, sorry Lu). What do I replace it with? Real gods? If Apollo and Hercules are judging you build the Parthenon, is that cool? What about some Dank memes, Business Cat and Rage Face judge your constructions? A mix of the two, a Rage Faced Apollo? I'm leaning on the 1st option, but I'd be happy to hear thoughts. Second. Game name. You're building monuments, and frequently failing to do so. The name I've been kicking in my head is Monumental Failure. Punny and old memes. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. Thoughts? I'm really excited to give a go at making my own commercial project. You'll be hearing more about Project Stonehenge soon.
  6. [DevLog] Monumental Failure

I wrote about how a world comes together, it's about as good as my other posts except it has the dankest gif:
  7. Painting tabletop miniatures

    These are looking great Twig.
  8. Plug your shit

Hey thanks. I think you'll find it makes for a great warm up game.
  9. [DevLog] Monumental Failure

Hey, I wrote another 2 dev logs. Last week's is about some tools I used to make the game. This week, I collected my thoughts on implementing a low poly aesthetic.
  10. I haven't played it, but some devs in this city made a game that uses Jake's 3D glasses idea: https://xmgstudio.itch.io/madness-at-monster-manor-2d
  11. [DevLog] Gravity Wolf / Dino's Side Project Circus

Good stuff. For your teleporter arc, if you're thinking of using a mesh, there are like half a dozen spline based mesh deformers in the asset store. I was curious about it the other day and had looked it up.
  12. Counter point: Giant Bomb's E3 podcasts are great. I especially enjoyed the ones that featured creators of games like Firewatch and Gone Home.
  13. Given that I documented the creation of Modern Idiot, just about every step except the upload I did the next morning, well, it would be really impressive if I could sneak a secret game in there.
  14. GDC 2017 Meetup (Update: 2018 info within!!)

If you're doing the conference and the parties, well, typically the parties happen near the conference so if you can be within walking distance that's ideal. Expect spikes in typical hotel rates!
  15. [DevLog] Monumental Failure

Oh hey I actually wrote a dev log for once. If you purchased Monumental Failure, could you do me a favour and leave a review on Steam. Thanks to everyone who has already
  16. [DevLog] Monumental Failure

Thanks for posting Henke. I plugged my shit elsewhere but I guess I should have done it here too, haha.
  17. Plug your shit

My game Monumental Failure launched today on steam. Here's the trailer: The game has single player mode, 2-4 player split screen versus, and 2-4 player local co-op. I think co-op mode is where the game really comes alive. Monumental Failure started it's life as my entry for Winter Wizard Jam (Wizard Jam 2), so its roots are in this community. Thanks to everyone who has been encouraging me along the way.
  18. GET IT! Might do an update later this weekend, but if not, here's a release! I'm making a game with some punch boys. Just wrapped up the basic behaviors for the punch boys. The grey guy is an AI enemy punch boy and the black guy is the player's punch boy.
  19. [Release] Punch Wizard

This was a real pleasant surprise! In case you wanted to know what the Waypoint bump looks like:

  21. GDC Meetup

There are usually a few people there each year. 2 of the last 3 years had meet-ups. I would suggest making a thread in Idle Banter as a lot of people don't see the game dev forum.
  22. Twitchy, Tasty: Twitch Team

Thanks for letting me know, I will at the very least get the auto hosting set up.
  23. Twitchy, Tasty: Twitch Team

Is there information on how to set up the auto hosting? A list of who is involved?
