I think a critical look at the mechanics and game design of Zeno Clash would end in a "don't play it" result. It's definitely an imperfect game, but what I value in Zeno Clash is its "outsiderness", it's a weird imperfect piece of art. Have you played any other ACE Team games? They kind of always have this problem, and this being their first I would imagine is the most egregious example.

I like to point out that it was released years before the real news of the PM and the piggy, which makes people have an "Oh shii....." moment. The subject matter and the realness make it one of the toughest episodes, which is probably what makes it harder to enjoy. It's not just grim, it's also gross!

Important If True 29: Untethered From Reality
Spenny replied to Jake's topic in Important If True Episodes
I hope whoever is doing all the fancy audio editing is having fun doing it, because I have a lot of fun listening to it! -
They posted the first episode of Monster Factory: Just Like Art on youtube and its rapid editing has absolutely ruined the goofs for me.

Idle Thumbs BONUS: Ruination Online August 2017
Spenny replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
The talk of the Whizzies is real surreal to me right now. The place I'm currently working has a annual awards ceremony called the Whizzy Awards. The premise is that everyone gets a Whizzy, but for work they didn't do. I, a programmer, will get an award for best designer, the designer gets an award for achievements in marketing, etc. It's fun! Anyways, sounds like I'm the first Wizard Jam participant to have won a Whizzy. -
It's certainly ending as a much different show than what it started as. At least they have seemed to abandon all the rapey stuff.

Oh snap, good luck with the KickStarter!!! -
When me and my partner did a 70+ hour roadtrip we munched through the back catalogues of mbmbam, Judge John Hodgman, and Sawbones. Something you both enjoy and easy to interrupt.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
Spenny replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
I think SAM has pretty perfectly summed up how I'm feeling. I totally respect the feelings of people who see problematic behaviours as swinging their opinion of the man to negative too. I feel that you can talk about how media might be problematic, even agree that it is, and continue to enjoy that media. It seems pretty rude to attempt to dismantle the explanations for why someone feels something is problematic. If you're not starting your statement with "I respect that you feel that way", what are you achieving?- 1367 replies

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
Spenny replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
So, like, yeah, a hundo percent, the question I'm asking after reading this thread, is does Dan, intentionally or not, use his platform to promote dangerous ideas. I can pretty much rule out intentionality, but, I'm not convinced that excuses it Yeah, I'm not going to get a cut and dry answer, but, this is going to be on my mind for a while.- 1367 replies

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
Spenny replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
Despite the encircling dumpster fires, the last bit of conversation in this thread has definitely given me a lot to think about. The good discussion here won't be undermined by unthoughtful ad hominem attacks.- 1367 replies

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan

I am now deciding that my opinion is that any medical advice that isn't "see a professional" is bad medical advice. Call me ignorant for that one.- 1367 replies

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
Spenny replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
You really don't need to be a doctor to call out bad medical advice. For example, it's pretty obvious homeopathy is hokum, but that doesn't stop people from recommending it and claiming "it works for me!"- 1367 replies

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan

When he's confronted on things I'm sure he means to say "This is right for me and works for me" but he actually says gets cut off at "This is right".- 1367 replies

My partner listens to this one, and from what she has told me, it sounds like what started as a "casual" true crime podcast gradually turned into a comedy platform for the hosts. Which, well, sounds a bit jarring with subject matter versus content.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
Spenny replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
Wether I agree or disagree with Dan's overall opinions, he has no articulation beyond "good" or "bad" and any opinion he expresses is so dull to listen to.- 1367 replies

Hey, so our team kept quiet through the jam, but we were working hard away at an I'll Kill The Last Alien. You can grab it here: https://scary-wizard.itch.io/ill-kill-the-last-alien Our team consisted of myself, my partner Jess, artist @stesug, and @Problem Machine making some catchy catchy tunes. I'll Kill The Last Alien transports the player into the role of The Berserker, a raging warrior who is flung out of a portal and into a fantasy alien world. The game uses bullet hell conventions to make meaningful fighting between The Berserker and the near endless waves of aliens. I'll be pushing a few little polish touches before the weekend, but if you want to check it out sooner, go ahead!
-
Me and my partner Jessica have been spending the weekend playing through several of the games. We're leaving comments on the jam pages as it's easiest for us from the couch.

I uploaded some fresh builds to itchio last night. The boss has a health bar now! There's a bunch of little changes all over. I also put some screenshots on the page. You can see what the game looks like! It looks like this: Yeah, I totally hear people saying that the game is tough, it sure is! I'm very glad to hear people are getting through it though. Playing some Wiz Jam games in the past, I feel that some of the better ones are a the tough ones. It's really rewarding to master something, and a jam game has the potential to deliver that in a short amount of time. I'm glad you picked up on the duality of the mechanics. @stesug is to thank for coming up with the way getting hit builds up your characters magical rage. It's a great idea that both made the core game more dynamic and interesting, and really paid off with the boss fight.
-
Yeah that's correct. Well, I'm glad you liked what you were able to get through. Thanks for the kind words. Level length was definitely tough to design for, and hey, I made the level before the boss pretty antagonistic, no doubt. Hopefully it didn't get boring. Thanks again for playing.

I don't have an in game tutorial for it, but were you using the time magic you unlocked?
-
Oh man, can't believe you're doing a networked game, good luck! Great art!

This wizard is top notch.
