Think I got a good idea for this. Let's jam!

congrats on getting through cert, I know what a pain that can be. Looking forward to playing the official release.

Makes sense Miffy, I can't imagine the perfect candidate is the one who gives the "perfect" answer every time.

That does look real cool. Much faster character movements than I had imagined in my head.

I definitely get an idea of what you're talking about Lork. I'm going to break it down a first, then punch it up. This is not the most interesting thing about the game, you've pretty much just described the camera. You're not the first game to do this, and it sounds a bit self congratulatory to say definitively that it achieves this. This is the most interesting part! But how does it focus on those things? How does the player avoid? Sorry if that's all a bit mean. What I take away from everything you have said is that this game fundamentally challenges the player to make weighty decisions within a 3rd person context of melee, shooting and dodging. I think that's interesting. Maybe start with something like "The game forces the player to make split second choices, be that shooting an ogre from a distance, punching a demon in the face, or rolling under the unicorn's laser horn, the consequences of which would be dire". I don't know, that isn't my best work, but I think instead of explaining the conventions that inform the design (third person, shooting, etc.) it's more interesting to give me a taste of what I'm going to be doing, what I might be seeing, or which character I'm going to embody. As a secondary point, I think the meets-meets-meets description shouldn't be used, and if that is the best way to describe the game, instead say "it was inspired by mechanic X from game Y". Hope that's not all too catty, and maybe helps some.

All great thoughts, but this especially seems like an immediate solution. I had thoughts of using a dungeon master type role, and this will do that! Well you've had 3 different people explain this rule to you now, but I wanted to chime in and say I played Twilight Struggle yesterday as well. The first couple games, us palyers screwed up at least 1 rule, and still had a great time. I'd encourage you to play again, it keeps getting better! Last night I actually lost by going into defcon 1, I played Missile Envy, my opponent gave me Duck and Cover in return, ending the game instantly! It's weird how many of these very specific insta-loss conditions the game has.

I'm curious if any of you folks have played the Battlestar Galactica game, because, it's one of BGG's top rated games (#29 last I looked), it's wonderfully thematic, but in the half dozen games I've played I am seeing a major flaw in the game. Specifically, the way that the game progresses via the Crisis Deck, is just too random, or put another way, too predetermined based on the shuffle. Given that the Crisis Deck is the sole factor to deploy Cylons and advance your jump track, the randomness in the order and amount of either of those two events occurring has made my plays of this game feel preordained, almost deterministic. If anyone else has played it, I wonder if you had the same impression.

Is it cool that I just keep posting little design things I find? I do find them very inspirational and kind of want a place to go to to find them again. Nuclear test participation certificates: https://www.flickr.com/photos/rocbolt/sets/72157636022681643/ (Thanks to KNappi for this one).

I definitely have a problem with people who try to level a conversation down to their absolute view, or a populist view, instead of elaborating their point or at least feigning intrigue into the other side. Alex and gaming mice, Dan and Taco Bell are examples of this behaviour. Totally frustrating.- 1367 replies

Thanks for the kind words. Part of the reasoning behind taking her home was not just to save money, but also if things did go further south, our regular neighbourhood vet would be opening at 8am. Then we would could get her treatment at a place that we're familiar with and is walking distance from our apartment, and probably cheaper than the emergency clinic. Dog pro tip, if your dog is hesitant to drink, put a little chicken broth in with its water. This is keeping our little lady hydrated today.

Moving sucks, start packing early, throw a bunch of shit out, and it might be a little easier. if you want to ball hard get some movers. Having your own place is awesome, and definitely worth the transition. ...and in my life... My dog is sick, very sick. I'll spare the details. Girlfriend and I were up till 4 last night taking her in to a veterinary emergency clinic. At the end of the visit, we had to make a choice about what kind of care we wanted to give her. 2000 bucks for the deluxe hospitalization, 1000 for the basic hospitalization, or 300 for home care. That's not an easy choice to make at 4am. We took her home with a bunch of medicine. I took the day off to watch over her, she's not displaying the symptoms she was last night, but she is still super lethargic. I hope it all passes, that it's a sickness and not an internal problem. It's all quite upsetting.

Hey you folks remember how excited we all are for that new Pixels movie with Adam Sandler and The Dinkles? Well we can make the wait a little easier with the official movie song. I really like that, if not counting Flocka's shouts, "This is not a game" is the first lyric. Quality.

Ancient Egypt? I think i know the perfect font... Also, congrats!

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

GPUs are one of the easiest swapped parts in my experience. The connection PCIe x16 3.0 or whatever it is, hasn't changed in years and isn't supposed to anytime soon. Just make sure your PSU has adequate wattage for the new card. -
Mostly fun, with a little bit of satisfying anticipatory fear. I have an iron gut, so the general sensation of my body being thrown around in extreme ways is always a unique interesting sensation. Also, yeah rip cord is awesome, especially you get a brief moment of free fall at the start.

It looks like 5 small red eye cycloptic robots are using their tiny robot arms to peddle forward the severed bottom half of their victims. -

I'm putting together a new build that has an i7 and a 970. Doing my research, the general consensus was that a current generation i5 is more than enough for most people, and definitely absolutely enough for current gen gaming. The skylake stuff isn't coming out for at least another 6 months iirc, so I figured I would prefer to not wait and just get a super beefy current gen CPU. I'm also hesitant to get the first generation of anything, so skylake wasn't worth the wait. -
Basically you just have a set of rules, that execute in the same order every time, these rules make use of the Random class, calling it to get random values. If you pass a seed in to the Random class before your rules start executing, the same seed will cause the rules to produce the same result. It can get a little weird with Unity because Unity reimplements C#'s Random class, but basically the idea is that you pass in a seed to Random.Seed and every call to Random.value (or Random.range or whatever other methods Random has) will return a value based off that seed. Also, Perlin Noise, very useful for random stuff.

That was a real great read, really does a good job characterizing all the different players in this weird intersection of the old and new schools of the brewing industry. A friend of mine who works in the industry once told me that a brewery can't be considered large until they're managing a fleet of trucks, which I take to mean that distribution is largest inhibitor to growth. In Canada there are lots of laws that inhibit distributing beer between provinces, never mind international trade. It's very uncommon for me to see beer from other provinces, so, I have to figure that as the small breweries are being bought out, the biggest benefit to them is the distribution, and in the end as the consumer, I'm benefitted by this. I also have trouble accepting the idea that this is AB Inbev trying to kill the craft industry and regain total control, sounds way to much like a conspiracy theory. I feel like every month I see a new Ontario brewery stocked in the liquor store, which makes me think that there is easily enough demand for more beer. I'm certainly in the market for more beers, I have tried about 200 different beers each year for the last 3 years, and that would be considered pretty weak by the Ratebeer elite. Ultimately it would be nice to see an entity who isn't a giant multinational corporation be able to figure this out themselves, and get the distribution figured out for the small guys, like a Devolver Digital for beers. As for myself, I'll try to keep the local small brews as my go to brews, but I'm going to keep trying beers regardless of who makes them. I think those redesigns are all huge improvements, with the exception of the Edmund, which makes an epic painting unepic. One of my favourites breweries, Musoka, is redesigning all their labels, keeping most of the illustrations, but just changing the bottles and label material. I wonder if it's something they view as keeping the product alive, simply redesigning for the sake of redesign. Old: New:

@Canada is run by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada which is pretty inline with Canada's no fun policies.
