  1. I think it's just 2015 for now.
  2. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

It was either some reference to ecrasez l'infame or les enfants terrible. I might just be getting confused because of course MGS would quote Voltaire. I'm at work, so I can't give it a listen again.
  3. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

As long as Cloud rides a dolphin while wearing cool guy sunglasses in crisp HD, it'll be everything I ever wanted it to be. I just hope they don't clean up the mess of a script too much.
  4. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Look, they referred to her using a French phrase. That's how you KNOW everything about her is smart and considered and high art.

That's not a good argument. Black Musician A didn't invent rock music. It's convenient to point to Chuck Berry and say rock music started with him, but the innovation even he's credited was anticipated by musicians like Joe Hill Lewis. Rock and roll comes from a significantly black phenomenon -- during the Great Migration, black populations brought blues and jazz and folk and gospel and country up north. They were in such close proximity to white forms of culture that they'd previously been excluded from -- both physically and because of radio -- now that they'd gone from the rural south to more urban northern settings that they were exposed to more white styles of playing and incorporated some of that into their music. That's just the prevailing theory since there's some argument over how rock and roll came about, but pretty much everyone agrees that you can't point to someone and say, "That's the one who did it. They did the rock and roll." The phrase rock and roll was even present in rhythm and blues music before anything we'd recognize as rock and roll came about, which complicates things a bit. Because there's no one person who made that innovation, you can't use that kind of IP argument. It's just intellectually dishonest. It was a cultural movement that was a direct consequence of the Great Migration, and all early white rock and roll musicians I can think of cribbed directly from black musicians without the black musicians getting recognition. Even when white musicians would cover black musicians' songs, they'd often have to wait decades for royalties and writer credit. There was direct harm done to black individuals by the appropriation of rock and roll music by white musicians, and the overall harm of the devaluation of black people and ideas. The overall harm is more what's talked about when you talk about appropriation. It's not that wearing a bindi is like punching an Indian woman in the face, it's the reduction of a culturally significant idea or object to an aesthetic renders their contribution invisible.
  6. True Detective Weekly - Welcome!

I never watched season 1, but was always kind of interested in it. Would watching the first season before the second be a good idea? I've been thinking about it anyway, but this might give me that push to actually catch up!
  7. Game of Thrones (TV show)

  8. E3 2015

I saw nothing but hype for it on Twitter last night!
  9. E3 2015

I think it's funny that dog is something to be ultra jazzed about when it's Fallout, but hilarious and dumb when it's Call of Duty. Did I miss something in the reveal that would make it so much better? I wasn't really paying close attention.

  12. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

If gross things have to lead to okay things, I guess that works! Because Lost Girls was gross as hell.
  13. Job Hunting

The place I was talking about has me officially starting as a temporary employee Monday -- and they asked me today to apply to a permanent position there. It includes accounting responsibilities, which I have zero experience with. I sent an email to my immediate boss saying that I wasn't sure that I could take on those responsibilities immediately but a gradual 3-6 month learning period would be great. The pay band they're offering for it is uh... okay, not a shitload of money, but I claimed less than 10k last year, so that 50k a year would be legitimately life-changing. I'm excited, pending a conversation about that email???
  14. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

    Lost Girls grossed me out!
  15. Idle Food - Cooking!

If you augment a standard chai recipe, you'll end up with a very cinnamony tea. You could also try boiling cinnamon and ginger for an hour or two or more (maybe a slow cooker?) and then adding more brown sugar than you think is appropriate. I had a Korean friend make a warm tea-like drink like that once. It had done additional stuff in it that I can't remember... I can ask about it.
  16. Feminism

EDC is one of those terms that's pretty common in a certain crowd. The CoD playing, MMA loving suburban white guy who was maybe in scouts for a while but never really got anywhere and talks about how cool all this military stuff is but would never actually enlist, and somehow always gets clip and magazine confused when talking about how much they know about guns. They have their dozen matches in a waterproof container that has a strikeable surface and a compass on top, a pocket knife that they never use, maybe an old wick and flint lighter. They carry these things "just in case" but have never had a reason to use them.tl;dr i was an eagle scout, ask me about the insufferable people i put up with
  17. Idle Food - Cooking!

I never use salt as a main seasoning! I use pepper and olive oil and garlic, usually. If I ever use salt in a dish, it's generally sparing use just to get other herbs and spices to effervesce and come out a bit more.
  18. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

Big fan of Lost Girls, his sex fairy tale book? Alan Moore's work has gotten a lot more spotty as his career has gone on. He's got some really phenomenal work under his belt, but I stopped keeping up with anything new or newish after a while. So much of it was just bad that the good bits didn't seem worth it.
  19. Ouran Boast Club - Planning an Anime Podcast

I'm on the side of only knows some anime and mostly talks about the stuff in the context of movies and books, so maybe I'll pop in anyway! But I have no idea what my weekend looks like next week, so I'll get on that poll Monday or so.

  21. Ouran Boast Club - Planning an Anime Podcast

I was going to try and join in, but I can't seem to put what I think about Time of Eve into words good, even after rewatching it. Have fun, y'all!
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

My mother gets a bad ant infestation every summer, and every summer she calls her industrial strength, licensed professional only ant poison dealer, picks up some black market goods, and watches the ones that don't die on the way carry a poison gel back to their queen. She just sets up a chair in the kitchen and spends however long it takes watching ants die, cleaning up their corpses, and catching up with friends on the phone. My mom is hardcore about her ant genocides. It's a little fucked up.
  23. Idle Thumbs 214: Ship It, Droopy

Oh my god. Oh my god. This is the best. "If you don't want to read my book, you are literally the devil." This is exactly the entertainment I needed today.
  24. E3 2015

I only ever see internet of things pop up in tech security stuff, usually just to point out that if someone wants to take over your fridge you are fucked
