  1. Recently completed video games

Really excited to play this. I picked it up based solely on the art style and I've only heard good things. I feel like it's a game I need to sit down, plug in my headphones and play with 100% of my attention on it. I just don't have the time to do that right now.
  2. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

What I love is that those items that are "bad" often have fantastic combinations with other items. Even if you don't get them, I still enjoy the challenge of being hamstrung and doing the best I can. I learn other things in the process. Interestingly, none of the item combinations make anything impossible. If you're good enough, you can succeed with any item combination, you just have to git gud. I also don't understand the problem with being teleported to another room. There's a map, and is usually a good thing.
  3. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Yup, and you feel like a god when you do it. It goes from this game that's impenetrable, to something that feels possible. That's what hooked me. I think my problem with Spelunky, is that until you get that amazing run, it also feels impenetrable. Unfortunately, getting that amazing run takes a lot longer than for BoI (and still hasn't happened to me).
  4. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

You put it better than I could Bjorn. To me what makes BoI good, and those bad items not a punishment, is that when I play, I'm in it for the long game. Each individual run doesn't matter, each individual run is a learning experience that lasts 20 or so minutes. It's the combination of those runs that makes me love the game. Each time I get better at dodging, shooting and I learn which items are good, which items I should trade a heart for and which items are worth the risk to get a powerful synergy. It's weird, I love it for the same reasons people love Spelunky, but I don't love Spelunky...
  5. Cartoons!

As of this morning, I've watched every episode of The Regular Show that's available on Netflix 4 times.
  6. The Great Debate: Legalization

Pretty much this. Generally they're boring people, just like those who think it's fun to "get wasted" all the time. Maybe it's because those people aren't particularly interested in reality, but rather escaping it in the least intellectual way possible.
  7. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

I'm listening to The Giant Bomb GOTY discussions about The Binding of Isaac. UGH! They're so wrong! One member is saying that "you need a FAQ open to play" because nothing is explained... That's the point. Bleh, I don't normally give a shit what people think of a game I like, but I normally like these guy's opinions and they're just so wrong.
  8. Is It Wrong To Eat Meat?

    Brb. I have an idea.
  9. Is It Wrong To Eat Meat?

Didn't know that! I've never had hemp seeds, they're not readily available in supermarkets here. And yeah, mixing different veg is a pretty easy way to do it. Apparently broccoli has a decent level/profile too. In agreement with dibs, if I make curry, it's vegetarian every time. I usually eat 3/7 days a week without meat. I also forgot to mention the economic argument. In the UK at least, eating vegetarian is significantly cheaper. I saw a sketch on the Mitchell and Webb Look, where a meat eater was irritated that a vegetarian household didn't make a meat dish for him, despite him making a vegetarian dish for them at a previous dinner party. Kind of interesting way to look at it. That vegetarians are unlikely to cook for a meat eaters preference, but expect to be catered for individually. The restaurant my father works at has no vegetarian dish on the menu, and so any vegetarians get their food special ordered (I always order veg food there because I know it'll all be fresh). Edit: Not trying to make a point with this, I just find it interesting. I understand what it's like for people to be angry that you don't eat meat, which doesn't make any sense whatsoever. The number of times people told me I was wrong for being vegetarian was innumerable and that was only for a short amount of time. The "eating meat is natural" argument was the most common, and by far the most irritating.
  10. Job Hunting

The weird thing about HR, is that they're meant to know what people are needed for a job, without ever having done that job. In highly technical areas, they will likely know less about They're also meant to be the intermediaries between management and general staff...but are still below the management, and have their salaries paid by them. HR departments are basically a boondoggle in my opinion.
  11. The Great Debate: Legalization

He could, that's why I made sure to bold smoking, and to be fair, smoking is probably the most used way to consume cannabis.
  12. General Video Game Deals Thread

If you have PS+, it's £10.99. I had to get 1 at that price, what is it? 70% sale?
  13. Where in the World - Idle Thumbs Map

I know there are at least a couple more Manchesterthumbs that haven't given away their hideout yet.
  14. The Great Debate: Legalization

Damnit, I'm pro-legalisation but cannabis smoking is far more likely to cause cancer than help in any quantifiable way. Cannabinoids also have some short term usage side effects, which while aren't life threatening, aren't particularly pleasant. I'm sure there are long term, but I don't know of any major studies looking at them. A lot of the research on cannabinoids and cancer therapy is pretty poor and rather biased in my opinion. I'm mainly pro-legalisation because I don't care what people do in their own time and own space. Like cigarettes, I think it should be banned from all public spaces, but let anyone do it in their home. I kinda feel the same way about cocaine, performance enhancing drugs (colloquially steroids although that term is inaccurate) and ecstasy too, they're moderately safe drugs, and cost the UK far less in medical bills than alcohol, high fat diets and smoking. They also cost the UK far more in police enforcement and keeping offenders in prison that is necessary for something so relatively safe.
  15. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I wonder how many of the high profile gators are in it for a potential pay off? It would be pretty easy to get a following in that community, generate youtube money, write a book, release a gamergate game. I wish I had the time to be a fakegate and make money of these idiots.
  16. Job Hunting

Haha! I remember being told I wasn't qualified for a job by a company's HR department and that I wouldn't get an interview. I called the interviewer directly and she told me to come in anyway, which led to me getting the job. HR knows nothing, and are generally hated by the actual staff in every company/university I've worked in. The Meyers-Briggs thing pisses me off. Why would a company need that information? Wouldn't it be discrimination to not choose someone based on that test? Not to mention that those tests have been proven to be pseudoscientific bullshit multiple times. I have no idea why they're so popular - they're all over the internet, and clearly in large companies too.
  17. Is It Wrong To Eat Meat?

Just to clarify this point that Zeus makes. You absolutely can get all the essential amino acids from a vegan diet, it's also very easy on a vegetarian diet thanks to eggs, cheese and milk. The reason many people don't is that if you don't eat a wide variety of the high protein vegan foods, you will not get all those essential amino acids as no vegan food has every single essential aa, unlike meat and dairy. The problem comes when vegans or vegetarians are fussy or lazy eaters. They don't eat the full compliment of high protein foods and miss out on those essential aas leading to health problems. So basically the people who come off a vegan diet for health reasons are doing it wrong. This debate is weird for me. In the way SBM puts it, ethically, I think eating meat is bad. For health reasons (especially for people who do a lot of resistance training or intense sports like me) I think eating meat is important. Environmental? Yeah meat is wrong, there's no argument there. I was vegetarian for 4 years, but I stopped because I like the taste and the feel of meat. I was dreaming about meat for the final 3 years of my 4 year vegetarianism to the point where my subconscious made me give up and eat it again. I found I ate a lot more healthily when I included meat in my diet, I lost a lot of weight too. I also work on animals, so while mice are never used for meat, I think it's an important for me to consider and rationalise separately. In the end, I rationalise eating meat to myself because I would not have a problem killing an animal to eat it. Animals have zero responsibility to anything other than their progeny, which makes me think that they are less important than humans. While some people also have a similar level of responsibility to animals, we all have the potential for more, which absolutely separates us. We also have a much higher ability to suffer, whether a person is mentally impaired or not, compared to many animals. I guess you have to draw a line. I think eating primates is wrong. I think testing on primates is wrong. A cow and a chicken are not anywhere near the intelligence level/ability to suffer as a primate. Pigs...they come close but frankly I like their taste too much to care. I find this hard because I'm well versed in many of the vegan/veg arguments, and I agree with most of them. I just choose to be selfish.
  18. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

You've just gotten to the best past of 3DW. I'm not great at platformers, so I really enjoyed the early levels too, but the rush I got from beating those later levels was akin to killing a boss in Dark Souls. I hope you beat it solo, it'll give me hope to try again. Oh OK, that's cool. I'm definitely going to get 1/2. I'm kinda irritated they released 2 on WiiU first, I don't want to play them out of order. Or is 1 OK to go back to after 2?
  19. Nintendo 3DS

I'm tempted to make the pre-order just to sell again on eBay. I'm a terrible person, but the money to be made is hard to resist.
  20. Job Hunting

I think localising would be difficult considering he's not a native English speaker. I've helped him with translations before by basically doing the localisation with him. I'll mention it though, the only real reason I helped out was because I was there.
  21. Idle Digging - Shovel Knight

Me! I have to give a week or so between each level because I can't play in one long sitting. If the check points mid-level saved when you exited the game, I think my experience with it would be completely different.
  22. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

I think it is literally just collecting those star bits. Which is a pretty lame use for motion controls. Kaputt, did you beat champions road? I'm convinced it's impossible in single player. Unless you have the reactions of a god. It's been a while since I all but completed SM3DW, so I'm pretty excited to play another Mario game, although I'm probably going to be in a little shock since Galaxy is meant to be very different from 3DW. eBay seems to have a bunch of people selling official stuff for relatively cheap, much cheaper than brand new at least.
  23. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I started Persona 4 Golden again, on easy, after giving up on my hard playthrough. I quit around the 50 hour mark because that game is not designed for grinding, and the dungeons were frustratingly boring. The music feels like coming home. Such a great soundtrack, and I'd really like to actually beat it one day.
  24. Life

Ok, sorry I brought it up. Sounds serious! Hope it isn't anything serious though.
  25. Job Hunting

He speaks a central European language, and done some translating before, so this could be an option, but I already mentioned it and he absolutely hates translating. So I don't think it would be for him (it doesn't help with his hunt that he's incredibly picky). He doesn't want to teach. I know it's a viable option, but I understand why he wouldn't want to, certainly not a job for everyone. Yeah I've advised him against a PhD already. He knows a few people who are going on to do them, but I agree with you, it makes you look over qualified for most jobs, you get no translational skills like you do in STEM, and as you said, the academic job market is basically non-existent.
