  1. The Great Co-op Thread

I liked what I played of Warframe, but they use so many strange in-universe terms to describe currency or modding weapons and stuff that I got a bit bamboozled and just gave up. The moment to moment gameplay seemed really good fun though, although I repeatedly felt that I was being outclassed by anyone who was using a mouse and keyboard (I was using an X1 pad)
  2. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Do I have to have that game installed to watch the stream? I'm in the same boat as everyone else, it seems, in that I've tried to play CK2 but not really understood what I'm supposed to be doing. Seems such a fascinating game but not terribly user friendly
  3. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Mario World had Y as run, B as jump and A as spin jump. I think there was another button you could hold to run but I can't remember what it was.
  4. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I think that B button being used as cancel is counter-intuitive, in terms of its positioning on the GC pad. For me, cancel was always the button on the right hand side (B on XBOX, A on SNES pad etc.) I believe in Japan that the button on the bottom is usually cancel, and the button on the right is accept? However it does make sense that it's cancel in the context of that controller because it's both the "opposite" colour to the big green A, and so much smaller. Green is usually a positive colour, let's do it, whereas red means stop, go back. You can see this also in the colouring on the xbox buttons. The playstation pad mixes things up a little, but still keeps the red button as the one to go back. Edit: God of War had quite clever QTEs. IIRC, they had the on-screen prompts correspond to the positions of the buttons on the pad, and the PCs actions would correspond to what those inputs did during normal gameplay. Eurgh, does any of that make any sense? I'm quite hungover.

It's handy in a QTE where the position of the onscreen prompt corresponds with the position of that button on the controller
  6. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

That's curious, because on the 360 pad, X is on the left, and A is at the bottom?
  7. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Has anybody got a Steam controller? I'm curious about it, but also have some serious reservations about my ability to adapt to one.
  8. Video Game Recommendations

Over the last few months I've really enjoyed: Grow Home - short, sweet and something you could enjoy with eg. A younger sibling Machinarium - charming, not too hard, great ost Witcher 3 - lots of tits in it, and also genuinely hugely impressive in lots of ways Crypt of the Necrodancer - v.original, not reliant on random chance to succeed, awesome tunes
  9. The Witcher 3: What Geralt Wants

I like how in this game, if you arse about for long enough, you can fail a quest. Don't know how common this is but in the first area I assured a herbalist that I would heal her friend, and then IMMEDIATELY didn't give a shit about any of that. Went off for like 20 hours and that person died. Went back to the herbalist and Gerald just sort of shrugged and said "it probably wouldn't have done any good anyway"
  10. Catching up with you "retro wishlist".

I've still not played Suikoden 2. Everyone and their dog tells me that it is one of the very best JRPGs ever, but something always seems to distract me. I've had a decent amount of success emulating PS1 games, but no matter how good (see: authentic) I can get a game to look, something indefinable always niggles at me. I'm just mental I guess
  11. The Witcher 3: What Geralt Wants

I got it, playing it on my cruddy PC. It runs at 30fps with most things turned down, at 1600x900 resolution, and by heavens it still looks damned good. GF is moody with me now because I've been playing it just now for five straight hours. Only coming off it because I fear she may leave me and shack up with someone less hopelessly addicted
  12. Let's discuss what a video game is

If I were Emperor of the cosmos, I'd force everyone to play Gone Home. At gun point.
  13. Movie/TV recommendations

I haven't seen any of series 2! *sticks fingers in ears/eyes/nose*
  14. Movie/TV recommendations

That's what I got from Twin Peaks as well, that it was deliberately melodramatic in order to mimic a shitty day-time soap opera. Not a UK soap opera, mind you. In those, the acting is usually fairly competent and the storylines usually hew more closely to reality. Somebody is being blackmailed because they cheated on their spouse? Check. Somebody is pregnant, and they're not sure if they should keep it? Check. A fire burns down the local pub, and nobody is quite sure how it began? Check. A train is derailed and kills several characters whose actors have recently expressed a desire to move away from TV and work in theatre? Check. In isolation, some of these things might be halfway believable, but when mad shit is happening EVERY SINGLE DAY, everybody would flee the town in terror, sure that it and themselves were under a curse. (Sorry, I don't much care for soap opera) Anyway, I've been watching Peaky Blinders and it's (largely) amazing. The depiction is Birmingham in 1919 seems to be very authentic, although I'm no historian/time-traveller, the casting is spot on and the acting is almost entirely wonderful. The actress who plays Grace does an okay job, but she's definitenly the weakest link in the chain. In addition, I'm not sure how Has anybody else seen it? Edit: and the soundtrack is great
  15. Recently completed video games

I remember trying to get into Jack's pants, trying to wheedle my way in by saying just the right things, the things I thought she wanted to hear. Completely reprehensible behaviour really, considering she has trust issues and was finally starting to see me as someone she could trust. Anyway, she saw completely through my act and rebuffed me totally, and it was *awesome*. So often with dialogue choices in Mass Effect (and in ME2, just not that convo) I knew exactly what to say to achieve the outcome I wanted - gaming the system, basically - but with this one the excellent writing was geared to counter that kind of behaviour, without feeling at all fake or out of character. Just top-notch characterisation in that game, not with everyone, but with a fair few
  16. SOMA

Thanks for that, I've been wondering if SOMA is the game for me, as a fan of Amnesia who generally didn't enjoy getting killed by monsters. Horror games are at their best for me when they're building, and then sustaining, tension. Amnesia did this very well, but it would be undone when I'd get killed by a monster: all that tension instantly dissolved. Now, I know it was possible to run and hide and that too was a very tense experience, but I wasn't good at that and would frequently get killed. If you're killed, all that happens is you're set back a very short ways, the beastie(s) are shuffled around (or removed entirely sometimes, I think) and you try that section again, this time feeling a little less tense and a little more irritated. I suppose what it meant for me was being reminder that, yeah, this is a game, and just getting yanked out of the experience. Probably have more to say on this but my brain isn't working right now
  17. Guild Wars 2

If I've got time, I'll probably come on this tonight and have a poke about at the new features. My "tonight" is about 9pm GMT; don't know if that works at all for anyone else??
  18. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

It should be illegal how much fun TS2 is! Played it for dozens of hours solo and more than that with my mates and we all agree that it's defo one of the best FPS games ever.
  19. Rocksmith

I am going to buy a bass for £20 from a troll that lives under a bin, which is under an even bigger bin (my best mate Jon)
  20. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Why didn't I think of this. Bethesda, nobody wants to engage with your boring, static economy
  21. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

God only knows. If any resource is in such plentiful supply that you never run out, why make it finite? Games are dumb Edit: "it wouldn't be realistic if you had an infinite amont, in this game about shooting dinosaurs in space in a parallel universe"
  22. GTA V

My gf shared this with me and I was just pissing myself. Maybe piss will also happen for you (if you believe)? https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=176&v=--MeKE_OUNU
  23. Rocksmith

Thanks Miffy, I'm an absolute beginner so a bit of simplicity doesn't sound like such a bad thing.
  24. Rocksmith

Is anybody playing with a bass guitar? My mate has offered me his old one for a very good price, and this seems a good way to learn (possibly?)
