  1. AM2R - Samus roids again

My nerdy metroid lovin' pal messaged me yesterday - for the first time in about a year - to let me know that this massive project has finally been completed. AM2R is a remake of Metroid 2, years in the making, and mixes a bunch of new assets with some stuff cribbed from Zero Mission, and the result is very polished and fun. I have never played the original M2 so have no basis for comparison, but my friend relates that this version is more enjoyable to play than that venerable classic due to a smattering of new bosses, and hidden items being tucked away in clever new places, so I'm sure it'd be worth a play even for those who've done M2 to death at this point. Don't forget to use your xbox pad! Anyway, grab it here: http://metroid2remake.blogspot.co.uk/
  2. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I thoroughly enjoyed that Shadow Warrior game, except for the boss battles, which I thoroughly hated
  3. Dead Cells

That was actually a pretty charmed run. I made it through the graveyard and fought the watcher. Whittled it down to about a 3rd of its life but the tentacles got me in the end. What's the maximum number of flasks you can carry? I've only got 2 at the moment, (the next upgrade is still over a hundred souls off) which might have been enough if I weren't so panicked!
  4. Dead Cells

I'm loathe to unlock any shields because I just can't see myself using them, and it would reduce the likelihood of an item I do want being generated... Okay, so I think I'm stuck right at the end of the Fog Fjord. I've gone as far right as I can and there's a timed door, now sealed. No way to go over the door (perhaps if I had triple jump, but I haven't got that). The map is completely explored and devoid of enemies and I've got 42 souls, the most I've ever had. Am I stuck? Did the level generation go a bit wonky? Edit: It's okay, I found the exit inside a building halfway through the map. On that note, the map really needs to indicate which doors you've been in and which you haven't
  5. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I only used one mod when I played, which was a mod which improved the accuracy and damage of all guns for both the player and the enemies. After that first section where you infiltrate the ramshackle compound, I felt like I really needed it to enjoy the game. I found that it wasn't any fun to me to take aim for a long time on a stationary target, then break my cover by firing only for my shots to miss, or if they hit, to barely do any damage. I get that the first pistol is weedy, but c'mon. Obviously, that's just me. I loved the game after I made that tweak. Sadly, I don't recall the name of the mod, but there are probably loads like it.
  6. Dead Cells

Just had a lovely, very tense run where I went into the Toxic Sewers for the first time, picked up a bunch of skill upgrades, then finally grabbed the teleportation rune in the Old Sewers! I had learned from my last encounter with the elite enemy that holds it to keep away and pick my moments to strike, and the fight went off without a hitch (tho I did "panic roll" a couple of times) Picked up the impaler from the Black Bridge as well, and I'm really looking forward to trying that out. The game has been doling out upgrades at a good rate, enough to keep me satisfied but not so many that I feel overwhelmed or don't get time to play with them a bit
  7. Movie/TV recommendations

Me and my partner finished the latest series of Silicon Valley last night, and it's still completely hilarious, addictive telly. The acting is astounding, at times, which I don't usually expect from a sitcom
  8. Recently completed video games

Who here can claim to finish as many games as Tanukitsune, the Backlog Battler? Not me, not with my attention span and Netflix subscription. BUT I did finish Castle Crashers! Okay, I already finished it about 5 times many years ago, but it's good! I mean, it's okay, the cracks are definitely starting to show. There are too many bosses who become invulnerable or duck out of combat, especially when they're down to their last few hit points (I'm looking at you, Ice king!)...and that's on top of having HUGE HP pools to start with. Ugh.
  9. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I finish very few games but I did finish Prey way back when. I did really enjoy the start of the game and seeing the cool/bizarre enemies and weapons. I remember a couple of bosses being easy bullet sponges, which gave me bad Turok vibes, but in the main it's solid. It's tricky to remember now, but I think I got fatigued with the final part of the game which drags on a bit. What do people think about the easy revival minigame? I didn't mind it, personally, although it made me play quite sloppily at some points. I figure people are gonna abuse quicksaving anyway, if they encounter a tricky patch, and this simply saves us a loading screen.
  10. Dead Cells

Aye, I just had a pretty good run and found maybe six wall runes? I put that money to good use in the shops, which always seemed to have level up bonuses for sale. The fire grenade is amazing, huh? I found two in my last run and was kicking ass in the Innsmouth place, the first time I'd been there. I'd scamper up a ladder or drop down a ledge, chuck both grenades, and then get out of dodge. I think it was a bomb bat thingy which did for me in the end, which makes sense because I didn't have anything good for targeting them and I was mainly looking out for large groups of enemies to bomb. It was a fun run, but I didn't like the boss on the black bridge very much. Too much health and not enough different attacks.
  11. Dead Cells

How many of those wall runes would you normally find in an area? I'm lucky if I find two, which makes me think I'm not paying close enough attention. Anyway, having played for about 2 hours, I can definitely say I like this game but I don't love it yet. I just got killed in the Old Sewers and lost almost 30 cells (a lot for me, probably a pittance for you veterans) and a rare blueprint. My fault that I died as I was being really overconfident, but it's a little disheartening that those items are gone with no chance of retrieval. I'd like a Bloodborne style system where I can challenge the enemy that killed me in hopes of winning that back. Ah well, once more unto the breach.
  12. Secret World Legends (remake of The Secret World)

I'm looking forward to giving this a try. I did try and play the original but it simply wouldn't launch for me for some dumb reason. Cool story huh
  13. Games giveaway

Would anybody like a code for the Quake Champions closed beta? I'd like to play it, but there's no chance I'll have enough time to really sink my teeth in. DM me plz
  14. Full Throttle Remastered

I have a lot of affection for Full Throttle, and have finished it multiple times (I would never have managed it without following a guide), but Jennegatron is completely bang-on with her criticisms. I like several of the solutions presented at the kickstand (locked door? Just kick it down!), but the solution is probably only intuitive if you're the leader of a biker gang

Ah, the tombs. I did them all, none of them took me longer than about 5 minutes (I know, that's not exactly speedrunning, but I'm not the brightest bulb in the hallway), and the rewards were utterly pointless. I feel differently than you about the sequel. One day, when I've got a beefier computer and it's 75% off, I'll get it and while away a few afternoons shooting thousands of generic bads. From the few reviews I read/watched, it improves on the weakest aspects of TR. I wanted so badly to like Alien: Isolation, but it never clicked for me. I think the one thing which bugged me more than anything was that on an enormous space station with loads of other warm, vulnerable humans present, the lone alien always seemed to be never more than a corridor or two away.

I finally, *finally*, after half a decade(!) finished Tomb Raider. The trick to getting through this game, I discovered, is to ignore the vast majority of collectibles and skip every single story cutscene, because they're all TERRIBLE and it's a shame that Rhianna Pratchett never inherited her father's gift for writing. Oh, and force DX9 mode, 'cos it's a boring looking game anyway and at least you can get it going at 60fps that way. There are I think one or maybe two unskippable cutscenes, which almost had me quitting, but I just looked away with my fingers in my ears and just about got through them. The kindest thing I think I can say about this game is that it's not 100% bad.
  17. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I played the demo of this for absolutely ages, just running around twatting perps around the head and setting hoodlums on fire. I seem to recall that if you shoot a gun from someone's hand, they'll surrender and you can cuff them... Or summarily execute them
  18. Mass Effect Andromeda - Thumb Drive Engaged!

Thanks for that writeup, I'm sure it'll prove really helpful. I've had a good laugh at all of the glitch videos, but realistically my enjoyment of the game is going to hinge on whether I like the characters or not. The combat looks good, but it's not the be-all and end-all in a game like this; there has to be downtime between the carnage, and a reason to want to save the world/galaxy/universe (delete as applicable)
  19. Full Throttle Remastered

Boy oh boy, did they make a pig's ear of that Special Edition. I couldn't play it for more than an hour, I was so aggravated by the control scheme and the art style.
  20. Mass Effect Andromeda - Thumb Drive Engaged!

I didn't know it was even possible to not take Mordin on a mission
  21. Guy called ChipCheezum has done a stream of himself playing this, from about 20 hours in I think. I usually don't at all enjoy watching unedited streaming, but this game is so much fun to watch. I do reckon that always having to ditch your metal gear ™ during a lightning storm would become a drag, but it depends on how frequent those storms are. Either way, game looks totally amazing Edit: if anyone wants to watch it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lwfSMhxrdw
  22. Cage boss is Micolash, I think. It's sorta like fighting the rabbit from Super Mario 64, if the rabbit were a host of nightmares (and who's to say it isn't?) I wanted to do the DLC before finishing up, so I'm on that now. I'm overleveled for it, I think, but it's still bastard hard. I do enjoy fighting hunters though, and there are plenty of those to go around. Edit: I thought you did very well to keep your composure in that clip I would have thrown my toys right the fuck out of my pram
  23. Stardew Valley

I didn't see that anyone shared this lovely piece of writing, but it really is quite something. I haven't played Stardew Valley in ages, but I very much want to return to Pelican Town after reading this. https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/02/13/stardew-valley-marriage-work/
  24. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I've played many a vania game, but usually they'd be set on a large (or very large) map, with all areas interconnected. This Shantae game is broken up into relatively small islands. Yeah, I can't think of a single vania game I've played that didn't have any backtracking, but I struggle to think of many where it's as A) transparent (a consequence of largely linear "zones") and B) prevalent. Hell, if you don't have pirate flares, you can't even get back to the boat without running through the same areas you just went through, except right-to-left this time. If I never have to run across Mud Bog island again, it'll be too soon *shudder* This is my second Shantae game. I thought that Risky's Revenge was a tighter experience, and shorter as well, which helped, although even then I got a bit miffed with backtracking a lot.
  25. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

That's your Shantae and the Pirate's Curse fucked off forever. I wasn't having a great time with it anyway (too much combat, which was v.simplistic, and backtracking) but the final gauntlet is such an enormous jump in difficulty that I literally can't do it. Why do it, devs? The rest of the game has a well pitched challenge which elevates steadily, and your skills grow to meet it. And then BAM, difficulty spike from Hell, "let's see how you handle this" I thought I'd earned the right to see and fight the final boss by playing through the entire rest of the game, but apparently I was mistaken!
