  1. General Video Game Deals Thread

I've probably spent more money on GOG sales than I have on Steam sales at this point. it's worth mentioning now that every day throughout the sale you can claim a special deal from 1 of 3 boxes, one being a classic, another being a new game and the final being random. i don't know if it's the same for everyone, but the classic for me today was Sim City 2000 for $1.79. unfortunately i already owned it edit: picked up Crusader: No Remorse, Septerra Core, Shadow Man and MDK all for $11.36. all for my mac, too. the mac support is really great, god knows how much i'd spend if i had a pc
  2. yeah I've heard from every fan that at this point it'd be futile to start reading now. a sad couple of years ago i accompanied the first 200 pages with a bottle of wine and i still couldn't get into it. you'd be better off spending that time on catching up with Cucumber Quest by Gigi D.G. who's drawing for this game, something i did recently and that is very doable
  3. Wild Speculation - Fullbright's next game is...

i was hoping steve gaynor's tumblr would be indicative of influences for his next game, but i guess not this time?? unless you play as resurrected country music singers who are now cyborgs and must eliminate/hack mecha taylor swift and her cyber-corporate army. a boy can dream
  4. wow that's a real shame. i hadn't checked recently, i just remember when the first one was announced.
  5. Starbound

despite never playing terraria or liking minecraft i picked this up today and played for about 4 hours. had a decent time, the game hasn't opened up for me yet though i had fun digging out my own cave system and making it look all nice. terraria never really interested me at all but the idea of space exploration is cool to me any chance of idle thumbs server? none of my friends really play video games so i figure it'd be a good way to explore multiplayer
  6. some really cool artists are working on this but it sucks that hussie put a homestuck character in there. it just seems really selfish
  7. GOTY.cx 2013

i'll just list my favourites and say a few words about ones that I haven't seen many talk about yet Gone Home Animal Crossing: New Leaf - played 150 hours and still going strong! Spelunky - i still play this game every day LoZ: Link Between Worlds Injustice: Gods Among Us - i'm a big fan of Mortal Kombat 9, and Injustice felt like that but with a ton of stuff thrown in. I don't really care about the DC universe but I thought the roster and movesets were pretty cool, especially the supers. and the way combos work in netherrealm games is really satisfying. good fighting game Skulls of the Shogun - i wish this caught on better because i found all the mechanics really fun. simple strategy with not too much missing, definitely plenty of nuance and room for their to be somewhat of a high skill roof, though the enjoyment definitely came from the accessibility and just being able to jump into a skirmish without worrying about it being too much of a timesink Saints Row IV - where GTA games have lost almost all of their character since the PS2 era i feel like saints row games have been gaining more and more, and IV was just a ton of fun, probably my favourite open world game to date bar Sleeping Dogs Super Mario 3D World Fire Emblem: Awakening Device 6 Hexcells - i love a good puzzle game Starseed Pilgrim - most of the enjoyment comes from the first 2 or 3 hours of coming to terms with how the game works, after that the difficulty comes from actual gameplay rather than trying to figure out the systems. still pretty memorable for that though I haven't played much of Ni No Kuni yet but I'm really enjoying it so far. Also wish I could buy Assassin's Creed 4, looks like something I could really get into. I want Luigi's Mansion 2 and Etrian Odyssey IV too, and if I didn't just have a Mac I would've played Gunpoint, Brothers and The Swapper by now
  8. Recently completed video games

i picked up Hexcells this morning and just had to play every puzzle. just as good as sudoku or picross with a few more systems that it rolls out pretty slowly over not that many levels, but probably just the right amount for the price ($3). yeah my only complaint is that only the last section is much of a challenge and it just made me want like 50 more puzzles of those. the first 4 sections especially are just teaching you how to play. buy it though, maybe he'll make more levels if he makes more money
  9. Essential 360 exclusives

I'm sorry but I really like Halo 4 and Gears of War 2. I don't really play or like shooters anymore but I had a really fun time with both of those last year when I got myself a 360. I didn't really like Gears 1 or 3 though. I played all 3 on one lonely weekend and Gears 2 happened to be the one I accompanied with a bottle of rum so maybe that was it. basically get Gears 2 and a bottle of rum and play it all in one go. as for Halo 4 i played that game probably more than I played anything else last year, bizarrely. there's a wealth of content and Halo online is still the best online FPS experience on consoles
  10. Recently completed video games

finished device 6 after not enjoying the first bit at all a month or so ago. I still stand by the first chapter being kind of lame and the story stuff is kind of boring until you discover the implications later on, since I just thought it was gibberish. the rest of the puzzles are great though, really satisfying stuff that I wish they put into other games. think I might reinstall FEZ and finish that so I can get to the crazy puzzle stuff people were talking about before. also finished the 8th world in SM3DW
  11. Super Mario 3D World

well it came out in europe today, so I went and picked it up. now i'm at the last castle of the 8th world, i'm guessing there's more to come after this, though? I've got 149 green stars, just need to get 170 to get inside. it's a good game!! nintendo can still surprise me and put a big grin on my face with some crazy level design ideas i've never seen before. I liked the shadow area, for example. most of the bosses seem unusually easy/unimaginative compared with the rest of the game, i dunno why they keep rolling out the koopa kids my biggest qualm though is probably with the fact they put a timer on every level. the nice thing about 64, galaxy and sunshine was that you could freely explore each level. I know the structure is totally different and most of these levels have a clearly set out crit path but there was a level in world 4 where it drops you in a huge field with the sun setting in the background and some rabbits hopping around - i was cat luigi at the time and i really just wanted to scamper around but i only had about 100 seconds left. maybe getting rid of the timer is an unlock or something, i don't know edit: the music might be my favourite in a mario game yet (except for dire dire docks) and the sand looks pretty great. almost journey-level sand.
  12. hey everyone, I'm terrible at grand strategy but I love this tumblr and thought you'd appreciate it too, if it hasn't already been linked to
  13. I need a little help regarding my buttocks

i hear "sumos" are good, they're essential gigantic beanbags and they look super comfy. or you could play games standing up to improve your posture!!!!!!
  14. Super Mario 3D World

delfino plaza was cool and I am a Sunshine apologist but I preferred the galaxy one for being so abstract and it felt more like a hub. both definitely fit their respective settings really well though. I don't really care for the mario 64 hub too much in comparison edit: how is the tablet used in this game? still haven't really seen a game that uses the tablet as intuitively as i might like except for maybe Funky Barn
  15. Super Mario 3D World

ever since galaxy 1 spoiled me with that fantastic hub seeing the super mario world map like that really irks me. it's one of the reasons i felt kinda detached from SMG2, too. I totally get why it's in SM3DW but it just makes me want another super mario galaxy 1
  16. yeah weirdly the puzzles were my least favourite part of that game. some of them were egregiously unintuitive, and even knowing what to do next in that game could be difficult. I'm still halfway through the EU only sequel and I'm enjoying it, I should jump back in soon
  17. can anyone link to the spelunky racing streams that were mentioned? I listened yesterday but forgot the URLs
  18. Hotel Dusk is really fondly regarded by a select few, and I'm pretty sure everyone else just thought it was alright. probably one of my all-time favourites though, I just loved everything about every artistic detail - it has my favourite soundtrack of any game I've played, not to mention the compelling (if cliched) characters and the cool art. I really need to play 999 at some point I put a whole bunch of hours into the Skate series, especially Skate 3. Skate 3 was a further step in the right direction towards that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater level of craziness and hilarity (still not that close though) but it was EMERGENT hilarity because of all the weird ragdoll stuff. truly the Far Cry 2 of skateboarding games. beyond that it just controlled really well and made pulling off even really simple tricks feel good other games I wish other people appreciated a lot more: Stacking, Super Paper Mario, and to a lesser extent VVVVVV because I'm pretty sure everyone loves that game
  19. Spelunky!

I'll add you, mine is NK3233 I haven't done today's challenge yet, but the first two I did went fucking terribly - day one I landed on spikes in 1-2 and day two I landed on spikes in 2-3. otherwise in my adventures recently I've been getting to the ice caves usually and surprisingly often I can get to the temple now, which I had never done until like 3 weeks ago. since I started watching other people play I haven't really used shortcuts, since I learned accumulating gold is a pretty important aspect of the game. I'll play for about 2-3 hours a day probably, even though I still make stupid mistakes constantly. it's a good game to play while listening to podcasts
  20. Neptune's Bountiful Pride: The Sequel

bump! i just heard about this game and I wanna play it a lot.
  21. totally agree. and i feel like this coming generation will have sony and MS try to curate indie games the way steam has been doing for a long time so it won't necessarily see a huge change as far as that's concerned. and the lines between indie and AAA will continue to blur until once again we just have "Video Games"
  22. Your Favourite Book This Year (2013)

I'm a Murakami fiend, he seems to be all I read. I've been chain reading him for a year now, on and off alongside other books. I just polished off his short story collection "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" and I really enjoyed it. It's a great way to enjoy Murakami, and before a lot of his books you can find his introduction where the first line is "I find writing novels a challenge, writing short stories a joy". some of the stories are either short versions of stories he later went on to write complete novels on, or short stories that have cruxes that you can find in some of his full length novels. stuff he's written like "Dance, Dance, Dance" (favourite Murakami) definitely read as though they're several short stories rolled into one book, too It's usually not the stories that he writes that I love so much as just his writing style and the little philosophical musings he'll slip into dialog or internal monologue. nothing mindblowing, just bizarre little observations or salient remarks that tend to stay with me for some time. he also seems to write so honestly and concisely, I guess like Hemingway where he uses fairly simple language to great effect, and I find it more believable. not sure why, maybe just because I can imagine it being said aloud in earnest. and his protagonists are usually fairly passive, as if he's making it easier for the reader to empathise with the voice he's reading by not really giving a great deal away, and focussing more attention on the fictional world he's built. i'm waffling, but i'm just trying to say I love Murakami. everyone please recommend me authors similar to him
