I quite like Even the Stars, a relaxing space travel sim that is mainly controlled by typing commands. http://polclarissou.itch.io/even-the-stars

Hatred: The Most Despicable Game of All Time?
bakelite replied to Architecture's topic in Video Gaming
Postal 4? -
Oh, how could I have missed that.
-
Neat. If I fall down a hatch, is there a way to get back up?
-
I noticed the other day, congrats. Any plans on selling your room generator? I'm sure there's a market for it.

Same here. I have a fairly nice GPU(GTX 970), but I was still surprised that it never dipped below 60 fps at max settings in 1440p considering how beautiful the game is.
-
It's a very personal preference. I dabbled in Max and Pure Data(visual languages for making music) long before I got interested in making games, so this feels like coming home. Besides, the only other option for UE4 is C++ which I know next to nothing about.

This gets the job done, why do you ask?

I have basically forgotten how to write regular typed code since I started working in the Unreal Engine. Visual scripting is much faster and the results are the same, but it feels like cheating.
-
The ending was exactly what I expected. Not bad, just predictable. Might do an Oculus replay when they fix the stuttering issue.

I've read it so many times that I've stopped noticing the violence, now it's just a beautiful piece of writing. If you ever feel like revisiting it I can recommend the audio version, excellent narration.

Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."

I was briefly excited about virtual desktops, until I realized that I was excited about a feature I've been using on my Macbook for years. At least they're trying to catch up. -
I just had an amazing scare when I suddenly came face to face with the alien and was sure I was about to have an intimate moment with the mouth-in-mouth, but instead it ignored me and jumped into a vent. I guess the AI had decided on that action a few seconds earlier and the code doesn't allow for it to be interrupted.

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

I got an MSI 970 a few weeks ago. The Zero Frozr™ took a while to get used to, every time the fan noise stops I instinctively assume that it's broken and about to catch fire. -
http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2iirut/help_break_alien_isolation_open_and_enable/ I had to delete the second line and set my rift as the primary display for it to work. It's the most terrifying thing ever, I actually quit the game the first time the alien spotted me cowering under a table and was about to pull me out. Fortunately the nausea-inducing stuttering which doesn't seem to be affected by lowering graphics settings and the camera constantly clipping trough my body gives me a less shameful excuse to go back to 2D. Regarding the lack of official VR support, they'll probably just patch it in once the consumer version of the Rift is out, it doesn't make sense to support a device that almost no one owns yet. And if they had VR as an in-game option on release people would be complaining about the currently less than optimal experience, if it's perceived as a hack people will take what they can get.

I'm about three hours in. My greatest fear is not death itself, it's dying ten minutes after my last save. When you have to do the same sequence over and over the tension disappears and the game becomes a chore. The death of manual saving is one of the most unfortunate trends in modern game design. It's also possibly the prettiest game I've ever played, even better looking than Metro. I'm a bit worried about the length, some review mentioned twenty hours, I don't see how they could possibly keep the xenomorph scary and interesting for that long.

I kind of want to keep a captain alive for as long as possible, just to see how far they let you take it. I imagine a furious dismembered orc showing up in some kind of primitive wheelchair using his teeth as his only remaining weapon.
-
I use a 2560x1440 monitor, this tends to make low-res textures stand out. Agreed on the animations, realistic and fluid, especially combat. This is the only new game that I've played since I upgraded to the GTX 970 last week, maybe I just had unreasonably high expectations given that it's not the top of the line card.
-
That it's not very good looking? Things look impressive at a distance, but once you get up close you'll notice the inconsistent texture quality. Try finding a bush next to a building, the leaves look much nicer than the wall. Or any orc, their faces look great while clothing/armor is all blurry. Not to sound too negative, it's still one of the most fun and interesting games I've played this year.

It's really unfortunate that they decided to do a bunch of Ubisoft-style crap like extremely restrictive "leaving mission area" failures and insta-fail stealth missions. The former just happened to me while I was standing right next to the guy I was supposed to kill, somehow we both ended up outside the zone. Agreed on the system requirements, my brand new GTX 970 can barely deliver 60 fps on max settings. It's not even a particularly good looking game, just seems poorly optimized.
-
They look like the same character in different games from different console generations.
-
Maybe it's just me, but doesn't Talion look exactly like the protagonist from Ride to Hell: Retribution? I'm just waiting for him to engage in poorly timed fully clothed sex with some grateful liberated slave. Excellent game on the whole, but I agree that the named orcs are a little too frequent and easy to kill to feel meaningful.

So I bought this earlier tonight. It's the perfect Oculus game, the holographic UI feels great. And I love how there's an element of skill to tasks that would be automated in most games, finally managing to dock after twenty minutes of failed attempts was incredibly satisfying.

Have you considered making a system for lighting whole rooms and corridors instead of individual sections? That would probably feel better unless you're going for space horror.
