Offworld, an economic RTS from Soren Johnson
clyde replied to tberton's topic in Strategy Game Discussion
I was mostly playing skirmishes in early access, but right now I'm just playing the single-player campaign. The title-screen music is stuck in my head this morning. -

For the record, I skipped the last two practice games. -

I'm really enjoying the campaign-mode. At first it seemed weird to be buying shares of the neutral colony, but now that I understand how it provides capital for later rounds it's kinda thrilling. I ran through the campaign as Maisie Song on Apprentice (at first as an expansionist and then as a scavenger) with no trouble at all; I didn't appreciate the wins. Now I'm playing on Employee as Reni-6 (robotic) and eking out a loss in the first round where we are nearly equal in shares at the end is really satisfying. I was frustrated that I didn't have diverse capabilities for manufactured goods, but that makes the win in the second round feel like a major buff for the rest of the game. I enjoy having to craft a long-term investment strategy based on hiring opportunities and available capital between rounds. -
Episode 354: Offworld Trading Company
clyde replied to Rob Zacny's topic in Three Moves Ahead Episodes
@Adam Beckett I haven't listened to this episode yet, but reading your post I see how much we have in common. I'm horrible at strategy games, but I enjoy them. I've played a couple of games of Command&Conquer against a human player over a decade ago, but single-player is what I buy strategy games for. I've only put in a few hours to Offworld Trading Company's final release, but I've played about 20 hours of the early-access. I haven't played a multiplayer match yet. The single-player campaign feels more similar to Invisible Inc. than it does to Civilization 5. It feels like a mix between both of them though since you are playing against bots who have the same toolset as yourself. I don't know that this is a game that your backlog needs added to it, but I'm not disappointed in the single-player portion of this game at all and wanted to mention that. -

The frame-rate of the opening sequence is noticeably low. I'm guessing 15-20fps. I have a i5-760 and a GTX970 and 8gb of RAM. It doesn't really bother me, but I figured I'd say something since you asked. The actual game runs fine. Also I did not follow the above instructions. I'm assuming that I'm playing the final release at the moment. The soundtrack is great by the way. -
I'm looking for someone who wants to try and make music with a upbeat, Celtic flavor. I'm fine with you not being Celtic. I'm also fine with you not being a musician. I don't have anything else in mind. I just kinda want to make a game with Celtic-like music. I do want to music to be made specifically for this game and I want it to be made during the jam.

Thanks for sharing. I've got an Oculus order in for the beginning of August. I'm paying attention to news about things like Project Tango, Samsung's dedicated device, and details about the Touch controllers in the meantime. If any dramatically benificial alternatives arrive before my creditcard gets charged, I'll jump ship. Either way, I hope the platform-companies prioritize cross-platform support between the devices because I'd love to see what hanging out with Thumbs in VR would be like.

I'm listening to the Gamers With Jobs podcast right now. I'm looking forward to playing the final release. Congratulations! -
@logorrhea You aren't late, we are just super early. I'm just trying to get familiar with this game-making toolset before the actual jam. ------------ Btw: the Phaser page has a bunch of examples where it runs in the browser and the code is directly beneath it, Super useful. http://phaser.io/examples I like the api page, but it doesn't include examples there like it does in the Unity documentation (which I've always relied on heavily). I was going to do the Asteroids tutorial this morning, but I got side-tracked trying to understand why I these scripts don't have to declare variables with their type. This 'var' thing feels strange.

This seems to eat up data much too quickly for my plan. I tried. I liked making a picture of my oatmeal. -

Can you record audio? It asked for permission to access my mic, but I can't figure out how to add audio to my picture. Edit: nevermind I see that it record videos -

I'll give it a try. -
Making progress. ('Space' to flap) For reference I used the second Flappy Bird tutorial and skipped the death animation because I was anxious to play with sound.

Man alive. I just spent 3 hours getting the Phaser terms to autocomplete in Brackets. It was a nightmare because I went into the Brackets folder in Programsx86 instead of in some User folder. If anyone needs help doing that, you better ask for it quickly, because I will soon forget all the steps I eventually had to do. Maybe tomorrow I can get back to that Flappy Bird tutorial. I just needed to complain for a moment. I'm ok now.
-
This may be an oddly specific question, but is there a way to make it so that MonoDevelop autocompletes and suggests parameters and such from the Phaser.js framework? If not, is there an inexpensive script editor that would do that?
-
I'm a complete javascript noob. I'll look over what you've posted in the next couple of days.

@Vasari I hope you make the prototypes available to play. I'd be interested in trying them out to give context to your Wizard Jam project. @Stack Smashing Does it handle audio well? I guess either way, this seems like a good opportunity to learn an html-exportable framework. I'm interested. I'll download Phaser and watch a few tutorial videos. If you have any particular recommendations to save me time, I'm listening.

Idle Thumbs 259: Breckon's Similar Sausage Face

I love it. I don't know if I can make a Doom connection, but talking about increpare and Dark Souls layouts makes me want to share this. https://ded.increpare.com/~locus/flickgamestructures/ increpare graphed out the paths of a bunch of flickgames. -
Oh man do I need that service. I put a lot of effort into finding discussions about games I'm into. I'm not entirely successful. I couldn't find the small games on that website. Are they public? Full disclosure: I have no ambitions to make a living-wage from games, nor do I have the capability to do so. I just like small games by amateurs.

I still really like the Indoctrination Theory for Mass Effect3 Whether or not it completely checks out is kinda irrelevant to me. I am able to revisit a lot of my experiences in the Mass Effect games with a twisty perspective with this interesting thesis.

This article suggests that there may be significant VR news at the upcoming Google conference. A smart-phone that is built with the capability to capture 3D meshes of spaces would certainly perk my ears up. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/04/the-google-io-2016-schedule-is-packed-with-virtual-reality-talks/ BTW: I just found out that I can make stereoscopic 360 captures of any scene in a Unity project using a free prefab from the asset store. That is awesome. I have only done a few tests, nothing that I'm especially proud of. But it's cool to be able to see 3d, panoramic captures of things I drop into Unity using the GearVR. 4096x4096 seems to be the best resolution for it. I've also been experimenting with using the ios Street View app to make photospheres for use in the GearVR. It's pretty fun.

@onedollarwilliam It's totally doable. Implementation of systems and the overall presentation of the game (especially things like movement) are easier or more difficult depending on the engine you use. Do you have a particular engine you would like to use? If not, give us some idea of what the most basic form of the game would look/sound/control like. I'm not sure if you are describing a visual-novel, a top-down tile-based RPG, or something else. Edit: Sorry that I didn't see you mention Game Maker. I'm pretty sure that you could do what you describe in Game Maker, but I'm not familiar with that engine. Still, implimenting things like character movement, advancement of turns, and audio-visual presentation can consume a significant amount of effort. I recommend working on the most basic functionality and presentation of the game and then implimenting an A.I. system onece you have the base of the game functional.

Idle Thumbs 259: Breckon's Similar Sausage Face

I'd recommend just downloading 5-10 of the games from this website and trying them out when you get an urge to. Most of them take less than 30 minutes to get through. A lot of them are somewhat distressing and a few of them are not safe for work. I don't really have any personal favorites, and I typically don't enjoy the act of playing them, but I gain something by exposing myself to them. I doubt that one game from that website is essential, but the diversity and expressed sensibilities and their being displayed as the work of an author presents a valuable context for computer-games. It's also worth noting that increpare made some very accessible tools for game-development and often provides the website-hosting for the results. -A choose-you-own-adventure making tool, tinychoice -An point&click adventure-game making tool, flickgame (also increpare curates a gallery of flickgames others have made) -A pinball making tool, plingpling -And PuzzleScript. -
Idle Thumbs 259: Breckon's Similar Sausage Face

Here is an article that asks developers in praise of Stephen's Saisage Roll for more in depth reasoning than what's allowed in a tweet. http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/271017/Simple_but_incredibly_filling_Devs_weigh_in_on_Stephens_Sausage_Roll.php I haven't played the game since I can't get past the first level in English Country Tune. It's interesting to see all these mechanically biased indie-folks find the no-nonsense game they've been waiting for; it pushes me more into my own biases toward material, motive, and imperfection. Stephen's Sausage Roll is such an interesting case to compare those sensibilities since here is a case of one of the most prolific, influential, and straight-up helpful developers in free impressionistic hobbyist games coming out with a mechanically refined commercial release that isn't attractive to me at all. It makes me feel like I'm in the place I want to be in.
