Sands of Time does share a lot of similarities to Ico in terms of setting and style of environmental puzzles, but is completely different in terms of controls and tone.

Ooooh, that sounds awesome. I'm excited.

According to their website, "Since finishing Journey, the team has been hard at work to make an emotionally engaging experience centered around human connections for players of all ages and backgrounds." No idea what that means, but I'm excited for whatever they do. Also, they're contract with Sony is now up, so hopefully their next project sees wider release. That's one studio that I think creates really important stuff and I hate that it's on such a limited platform.

Yeah, Journey's the only game I've played that feels in the same way at all to those. It's much smoother than either though.

Good to know you liked it. I think that will be my next show.

I don't think you need to 100% to consider it great. Depression Quest is one of my favourite games ever, but I doubt I'll ever play it again. I've played Journey twice, but I don't think I'll go for a White Robe. I've unlocked nearly everything in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but there are definitely still some trophies and challenges I never beat. It wasn't until a few weeks ago that I finally unlocked the last couple Warioware microgames I had left and I almost certainly will never ace every one of them. Really, the only games on my top 6 favourites that I've "100%"ed are Pikmin and Portal and both have fairly low-bar. Each of those games is still brilliant and I could easily articulate what makes them great and why I love them.

I wish I lived somewhere I could see that. Fun Home is the book that really made me appreciate comics.

Shadow of the Colossus is a game I want to love. It does so much cool, interesting stuff. But so many of the bosses have weaknesses or patterns that are really difficult to parse or solve. And then there's one that stun-locks you. Stun-lock is the worst. I quit the game there. Ico is perfect though.

I like Terminator 2, but it definitely rates below The Terminator and Aliens in terms of James Cameron action movies.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan

I don't think that's true about Brood War, but it may be of Starcraft 2. What difference does the free-to-play aspect make, though? Does paying for the original content make it okay to pay for more content, while not paying for the original content means no more content should ever be paid for? That seems kind of odd to me.- 1367 replies

Just to be clear, what about something like Starcraft: Brood War? Do you have a similar problem there?- 1367 replies

Austin Walker wrote up a few thoughts on race in The Witcher. Not a full piece, but interesting nonetheless.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan

Sorry, not sure if that was addressed to me or not, but in case I was unclear, I absolutely agree with that. I was responding to Twig saying that cosmetic changes should be the only ones you can pay for in Hearthstone.- 1367 replies

That wasn't the impression I got from what he was saying at all. All of Alex's comments in that discussion were coming from his own personal feelings - he didn't want to pay $10 for a simple cosmetic change. He never said "nobody should pay for this" - just that he didn't want to. As for the gameplay versus cosmetic discussion, they did bring that up, but I think it's a bit different in something like Hearthstone than, say, DOTA. There is a long tradition of expandable card games that add new abilities and mechanics to the game - Magic, Netrunner, Legend of the Three Kingdoms. Hearthstone is modelled after those games, so it's not unreasonable to expect those types of additions. Adding new abilities to the game, if done well, is not so much a "pay to win" button as it is an expansion.- 1367 replies

Considering that the premise for this game seems to be "all those XCOM campaigns you lost are canon," I really hope there's a mission where you have to raid the now-ruined former XCOM base for supplies.

Janet Mock and Laverne Cox both have really good takes on this.

The Big Book of Absolutely, Completely Nothing is a great name for a children's book.

For what it's worth, "go fuck your selfie" definitely sounds like something from Mean Girls.

The Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its report yesterday on the Aborignal residential school system. Here's a summary of its recommendations and conclusions - I highly recommend that any Canadians roud these parts check it out, as this is an extremely important political issue in our country.

Oh, I wasn't making a point about Splatoon, just addressing the generality of Twig's comment.

I haven't been playing Splatoon, but I have to take issue with this comment. There are definitely game that don't necessarily completely disallow talking to your teammates, but do limit communication strictly. Tabletop games are what I'm think of mostly here - stuff like Hanabi and The Resistance. EDIT: And I just saw that this was addressed with the Bridge comment. Ignore me, then.

They'll probably do console versions eventually. My guess is they just wanted to focus on the PC version as the lead.

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

The funny thing is, I think I did approach the game from your point of view more. FTL, for most of the time I've been obsessed with it (remember, this is a game I've put 200 hours into), has been about ship combat to me. But the more I've played, the more I've recognized that there's other stuff there that the Flagship runs counter to. For instance, there's a huge benefit to upgrading your Medbay, Oxygen, Doors, Piloting and Sensors for the normal game, because a lot of blue options for events require that. But upgrading those systems for the Flagship is much less useful, except to soak up damage. The more I think about it though, the more I think the problems with the Flagship are intertwined with the rest of the game. Maybe I'll make a "how I would redesign FTL" post later.
