The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Dewar replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Wandering around after reading another article led me to this gem: "I'm sorry." The first H1Z1 cheaters apologise on YouTube John Smedley has gone crazy fierce after separating out from Sony. I wonder if this side of Smedley has always been there trapped by the cruel corporate yoke of Sony. -
Recently, it seems like bread is molding so fast. I'm not sure if it's the relative humidity at our new place, the bread I'm buying, or time speeding up.

The internal monologue is the best though.

At least you ate it cooked. I would eat roughly a one pound package of raw spaghetti a week when I was younger. That and Cheerios, no milk.

Well, if you're not too concerned about shape, I was able to just pour out the appropriate amount of batter onto a hot (400f) grill, pick up the grill and slowly swirl it to get the batter as spread out as possible, then flip it when the top wasn't wet anymore. We have one of these: http://www.fjorn.com/32305.html

Browsing around that budget food site that was linked the other day, I came across a crepe recipe. My wife has a lefsa grill that's been sitting unused for the last couple of years, so I decided to get it out. Crepes are great, and I got some sugar-free pudding mix and made mini chocolate cream pies. Now, I'm looking into modifying the recipe a little and making gyros tonight. Yum! Mad Max 2 would have probably been more appropriate. In other news, Jeff Gerstmann, fresh from E3 judges week, reports a pretty solid "meh" on this week's Bombcast. While some of the things he's talking about do concern me (Assasin's Creed tower climbing to reveal the map for instance) I'm still willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Jeff is "meh" about most everything.

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
Dewar replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
It certainly had the most engrossing story of a JRPG-ish game I've played in a long time. Also, the fights in-between bosses were actually hard. I think I actually stopped after getting killed by non-boss monsters mere steps away from the end of a level. -
Finally got new agent missions on a new play last night, two in a row actually, and ended up screwing the second one up and losing. Oh well, I didn't have enough equipment for 3 agents, let alone 4.

Hmm, might finally be time to give up the mining lasers and upgrade from my Cobra to a Diamondback. Edit: Might also be time to just have a stable of ships to select from. Edit2: Man, that courier looks nice though, even if it's somewhat impractical.

That reminds me, I never did get back to Lost Odyssey. -
Wake Me Up Before You IndieGoGo: A Crowdfunding Thread
Dewar replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
Weird, canceled 4 days in. Not exactly clear why either. The final update on Kickstarter was flowery but didn't contain much of any substance. -
Weird, maybe it's a difficulty thing. I've still only played two days on experienced (played one day, died, and now am a day into my next try.)

I was worried when I heard 9 episodes that there wouldn't be room for the quirky bits that I really enjoyed, but weren't exactly plot relevant. Now at 18 I'm a little worried that there will be too many weird quirky bits that take away from the tone of the rest of the show. *shrug* I guess I'm just hard to please. On another note, I just watched Dune all the way through for the first time since high school. What a weird movie, but it was awesome to see McLachlan in a different sort of role.

I wrote a big response but now I'm re-reading what you said and I'm not 100% sure of the situation. I'll just say that even if you were still under contract, most employers will waive those contracts for you to move over to a full time position with the company you're temping with. It fosters good will all around to allow those sorts of moves to happen and, depending on the contract terms, your temp agency may even get some sort of finders fee like a recruiting agency would. If they're asking you to remain a temp, but want to pay you directly, it gets a little more shady. That's fairly common around the Microsoft campus, where a particularly good temp will basically get told to setup their own "company" with just them in it, and then they get paid directly rather than the temp agency taking a chunk of change. Unlike getting hired on full-time, you're effectively setting up a competitive temping company and many temp agencies will take a dim view of that. Whether or not they can actually stop you is dependent on legal paperwork of course. Edit: Besides all that, it sounds like she wants you bad enough to have gone through some wrangling to get a position made for you, so I'd definitely go for it.

Yeah, I guess i agree about the problems with popular vote in that way, but that isn't necessarily mutually exclusive with pursuing the issue in the courts either. Sometimes you just want to fight every way you can and hope that someone sees reason. I think at this point I wouldn't count on the US government to legalize water. On another (somewhat funnier, but also sadder) note, I've seen a few articles about the Catholic church kicking around about "how their message just isn't getting through" and such, rather than "maybe our message is wrong." The church that I occasionally attend belongs to the ELCA, whom recently appointed their first gay bishop, so it's both sad and silly that the Catholics are still stuck so far behind. Frankly, it feels like the ELCA is a bit behind as well, but at least they're doing something.

My understanding (strictly from listening to Danny O'Dwyer talking about it) is that it had to be a referendum since it would require a change to the constitution, which always requires a public vote in Ireland. Also, that article fails to mention that the government is owned and operated by crusty old guys, and leaving it to them to finally say it's OK could take even longer.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan

While I agree with some of the naming stuff out there in these new wave of time-wasters, I was mysteriously glued to the screen throughout the segment. As soon as they switched to God Hand I wandered off.- 1367 replies

I have not seen one of those yet either. Is it necessary to do the missions that give you lists of more missions to find them? I typically avoid doing those as the options for new missions have been pretty poor.
-
Talying a list of games I've bought versus games I've beaten each year has been a great midpoint for me, as I'm not stressed out having to complete a bunch of games, I mainly ended up just not buying as many.
-
I still haven't ever seen an extra agent on a mission. The closest I ever got was having a courier that I was supposed to escort out of the building, which I screwed up, and didn't know how to reset the mission as opposed to resetting the entire day.

I imagine why a lot of rpg-lite products have these sorts of minigames is so that they can then provide skills that make those games easier, and it's a meaningful choice versus doing more damage. i guess, by the same token. even in regular FPS's it's trying to provide a risk/reward mechanic of do I want to spend my time fiddling with this thing to make the next fight easier, or do I just want to go in guns blazing? The problem is that few people see "just don't bother" to be a valid choice.
-
Have they added quite a few minable resources in the past? I see a lot more minerals and metals on the list the last couple of star ports I've visited, and I'm not sure if it's because I'm in a different area, or if it's new.

Once I realized that rewinds could be chained, I agree it ended up being overpowered. Up until then I was assuming you could only do one at a time, which isn't necessarily very helpful depending on how long it takes you to realize you're screwed. I just beat this the first time through on Beginner. I had a really hard time at first, because I assumed that if a guard ever wakes up, that the counter would go wild or something. The moment I had to stun one guard, I had an agent pinning him down for the rest of the level and tried to make do with just one available. Then came the inevitable time when i had three guys down and was running around playing wack-a-mole. Once I figured out it isn't the biggest panic if they do wake up, the rest of the game was much easier. I made it through the 2nd and 3rd day without having to restart a mission a single time. I'm looking forward to boosting it up to experienced.

The more I play games the more I wish I could be that sort of gamer. Even games I love I tend to get bored with so quickly. What really surprises me is that Elite is the "low impact" option for you. I'm always worried I'm going to crash my ship doing something stupid in that game and be out a huge chunk of progress.
