  1. I'll be that person who complains about the Life is Strange spoilers. I skipped ahead a couple of times and thought I'd gotten past the Life is Strange discussion, but heard a minor spoiler, and decided to just shut off the episode. Don't really care about the spoiler I heard, I'm more bummed I didn't get to hear the rest of the cast. Oh well, such is life. I'm super happy to hear more Nick on the cast and am really looking forward to whatever disaster happens next week.
  2. Idle Food - Cooking!

I grew up with a father who had high blood pressure, so salt was used fairly sparingly. These days I do use it, but usually not that much simply because everything tastes way too salty to me in general. I throw a bit more on steak than I do most things, but still a lot less than my other cooking friend did. Edit: That reminds me, I was thinking of getting a salt plate for finishing off Sous Vide steak. My aforementioned friend had one and I really enjoyed using it. Anyone have any opinions?
  3. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

Hmm. Homeworld and Wreckfest are tempting.
  4. Elite: Dangerous (Kickstarter)

No, ranking up with super powers doesn't get you significantly different missions. Not only that, but with the new donation missions out there, it's stupid easy. I went from Master to Baron with the empire (Master -> Squire -> Knight -> Lord -> Baron) in about 4 hours trying to get my Achenar permit.
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I don't think that "homespun, unreliable" comment was throwing anyone under the bus. Any external solution is going to be unreliable, because Twitter could patch it out any day. Unfortunately, this is still a pretty poor solution. Crowdsourcing moderation is dumb.
  6. Life

    So should I
  7. Life

You should watch the 1973 Wicker Man movie.
  8. General Video Game Deals Thread

I'm way behind my quota on games purchased versus games beaten, so I doubt I'll participate much this year. Maybe some DLCs go on sale.
  9. Well, as none of my local friends who I've traditionally played Halo with have an Xbox One, this seals the deal on me being done with the new games in the series. I was hoping that the completely botched story line of Halo 4 was just a freak accident.
  10. Elite: Dangerous (Kickstarter)

Let me say to start out with that I agree that Elite is lacking in a lot of content. I didn't play it for a long chunk of time because of boredom and have only just gotten back in due to a new joystick. But, your last post didn't ask for quest lines, Elite already has what you asked for in that particular two line post. Quests do have ramifications on system politics, you can change the faction in command, push stations to other factions, and eventually flip the whole system. More options do open up for you, your standing with a faction increases which gives you access to more missions, and if the faction holding the station changes there will be more missions available for that faction. There is (admittedly minor) story building, in that the larger conflicts are documented in the Galnet news posts, and developers occasionally changing the galaxy due to player actions. Now if you want to argue those things aren't very well done, I'd agree, but there is functionality in the game for what you asked for already. Edit: Also, these systems do effect you some, even if you don't directly participate, due to the control bonuses that each power gives you. The can cause things like more/less pirates, decrease in outfitting or commodity costs, legalization or banning of certain contraband, and closure of Black Markets. Mostly minor stuff, but a savy trader could eek out an improved profit margin with 10% less cost for some items.
  11. I got a chance to play about 4 hours of Common Sense by linking up with a friend. The new style of building and improving provinces is cool, but still has the basic conflict of trying to figure out whether spending monarch points on this new stuff is worth delaying tech for. Except it's more obfuscated. I don't think it's a bad change, but I don't feel like it's a good change either. I have a feeling I've already screwed myself doing too much development and not enough other stuff, but I guess we'll see.
  12. Social Justice

I had the same experience going to see Mick Foley of WWE Wrestling fame. He's a great guy that has a lot of interesting stories, but man his two openers were targeted straight at the typical wrestling audience and didn't make me very happy. I'm glad my wife decided not to go that night.
  13. Unity Questions Thread

I have a feeling that I'm breaking this into too many small chunks and that's making it more difficult than necessary. Also, the difference between having a class definition and a class instance. Thank you all for the tips. I think I've figured out a couple of places where my mind is missing a step, which will make it a lot easier to fill those gaps using tutorial videos. The frustrating thing is that they have a video specifically on splitting up classes to make them easier to read, but then all the sample projects use one big class anyway.
  14. Hatred: The Most Despicable Game of All Time?

I would agree with that assessment. While I think there needs to be improvements on the way things are covered before release, he is unnecessarily snarky and unhelpful about it.
  15. Elite: Dangerous (Kickstarter)

No, there was already functionality in the game for that before Powerplay. There are system wars being started all the time that are caused, at least in part, by boosting factions via missions. My original HQ system used to be Empire back near launch, but it's independent now.
  16. I ran into a similar thing and I haven't played HoI3 since. I wish that Paradox didn't rely on these big triggered events. Watching streamers they end up looking in the wiki to find the trigger states for everything and that doesn't sound fun.
  17. Master of Orion Reboot

Talking about MoO just makes me want to buy GalCiv3. Agreed though, I haven't played a space 4X game that's had everything I wanted in a long time.
  18. Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good

By the time I got to the end of the actual game, I didn't feel like playing anymore, so I didn't do the DLC either. Also, the fact that you have companions they want you to care about, but then don't let you take along is kind of a bummer.
  19. Rooster Teeth has been slowly moving away from what I find interesting in internet video. I can only assume that it must be what someone is into. I finally stopped going to Achievement Hunter a couple of months ago, and I have a month's worth of their podcasts sitting on my phone unlistened. That being said, they actually have folks that do real investigative journalism over there, so it's certainly possible it's true.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

The Witcher addresses a lot of heavy social themes, sometimes less successfully than others, and I wonder if having real minorities, as opposed to the fake minorities of the Elves and Dwarves, would cause more difficulties. *shrug* Not saying that as an excuse, but just generally wondering about how that would be perceived by the general populace. It's easy to make Ashley space-racist in Mass Effect, but I don't think it would have flown well were she actually racist, even if it was handled with some modicum of respect (which Bioware isn't so hot at either.)
  21. DOTA 2

I played my first game in quite a while tonight. It was a train wreck, but we managed to stay close until one of their players dropped out and that ended up handing us the win. i am very rusty, and really didn't have a good idea where I should be most of the game. Other players on my team wandering a lot didn't help either. We didn't really have a laning phase. As a plus, I did get to hit my Zeus ult with Ag's and Refresher toward the end of the game and score a double kill.
  22. Elite: Dangerous (Kickstarter)

Well different figures have different bonuses they convey on systems, and systems in conflict have more enemies flying around pulling people out of travel speeds, so it does has some effect, but I get what you're saying. It still requires a group of players together putting in some pretty concentrated effort, which is something I'm not likely to see. It feels a bit like playing EVE Online really.
  23. Unity Questions Thread

OK, I feel like an idiot for asking this, but I'm actually dipping my toes back into programming again and I'm stumbling in the exact same place that I always do. I am missing a basic understanding of classes since the majority of my programming experience was from way back before Object Oriented Programming was really a thing. I am making a ship combat/trading/equipment module right now. I have one class attached to the player object that has the total size of the ship and what equipment is on it. I have another class that has the ship's cargo stored in it. The available cargo bay size is equal to total size of the ship minus the space the equipment takes up. I have created a function on the equipment class that calculates this and outputs it. I'd like to be able to call this function from the cargo class. How do I make the two classes in completely different script files talk to each other? Edit: C# by the way.
  24. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

    Also, way too difficult.
  25. Hatred: The Most Despicable Game of All Time?

Maybe it's an age thing. By the time I really got into music, Green Day had already been considered punk and then sold out and a lot of my friends were going to punk concerts only to hate the same band a year later when they got successful. Also, it could be a Seattle thing since Grunge pretty much annihilated other music for several years around here.
