Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
Dewar replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
Size numbers are not particularly easy to understand without external information. A lot of pants don't even have inches labeled on them, so you're left wondering exactly what 38x32 means. It's still silly because you could just do a google search and know in 5 minutes, but it's not necessarily as easy as it might seem.- 1367 replies

Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."
Dewar replied to Urthman's topic in Idle Banter
Old post I know, but does the card have a drive letter assigned in Disk Management? I have run into a few issues where USB sticks just never claimed a drive letter for some reason. -
Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I beat the game and liked it all right, but I didn't love it as a follow-up to Bastion, my favorite game of whatever year it came out. I think the blend of turn based and action you mention similarly didn't hit it off for me. I think I would have liked it better were it to go all turn-based or all action rather than trying to straddle the line. That's really strange as I remember loving Parasite Eve back in the day, and it runs a very similar hybrid system. -
The check is run after all the different languages are already in the product, so I assume only people who have the language set to English would actually see the word execute, and translators would have already handled any dual meaning issues. There are a lot of folks in other countries who run in English for various reasons, so I assume it was being sensitive to them, but who knows what MSLegal/Compliance is thinking.

I know that I used to make fun of the youngin's trend of using "like" all the time in sentences, until I mockingly spoke like that enough to where it started creeping into my regular conversation. Once I saw that happen, I endeavor to not get bothered by speech patterns anymore. It's not worth the time.

I bought it, but I watched the game on GB instead of playing. Also, the GB forums for the game have some weird supplementary videos made by the actors that are worth watching.

Off topic: That's interesting about the college housing difference you're seeing. My old college still has mostly the same housing buildings as when I went, but now they try and cram 3 people into a room that had 2 in it before. On Topic (the Kill All Men topic at least) I think that most people on here are probably aware that the .EXE files on your computer are "EXEcutables." Further, it makes sense that one term for running them is to execute them. A friend of mine that works at Microsoft loves to tell stories about the last stage of code compilation where they run the entire code base through a word filter to check for any bad words across 140 different languages (probably more, I dunno.) There's a lot of hilarity there when variable names end up coming close to some Chinese swear word and the discovery of what exactly that word means. However, it also flags execute as a sensitive word that shouldn't be used. I always thought that was weird, but then I realized that executions in the United States are fairly rare, but Windows ships out to countries where that shit happens, both government sanctioned and "illegally," a lot more than here. If I knew someone who had been executed, I'd probably be a lot less thrilled by being reminded of the event every time I ran a program in Windows.

Idle News Podblast: Her Story Spoilercast
Dewar replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
No, once I got to the point I was satisfied, I just used the random command (which doesn't appear to be actually random) to find the last 15% or so of videos I hadn't seen. -
Idle News Podblast: Her Story Spoilercast
Dewar replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Off topic: My steam games do that too. Nice to know it's not just me. On Topic: When the Thumbs were talking about the little smile the main character makes when she's playing the song about drowning her sister, a few unresolved plot threads came together in my mind. Did the murderous twin try to poison the attic twin with bad mushrooms, but it killed their parents instead? I can't think of any other reason why the death of their parents would be relevant. -
Talk about movie theatre distribution stories made me dream of a cast where they invite Jeff Gerstmann on (get him back for the E3 Firewatch thing maybe) and then proceed to talk exclusively about his stories delivering film reels when he was younger and not even talking about video games for the entire hour.

I was really pulling for MVP Phoenix. I hope they make a return next year.

I guess I had more patience or better luck or something. I made it through after 3 tries at it. It's a pretty crappy mission. I recall throwing a lot of grenades and then hiding in small spaces hoping not to get killed. -
At least when it tries to kill you it will be like that steam roller scene in Austin Powers.

It still opens for everyone at 9:00. It's a pretty big venue, so I expect you'll have a pretty good shot at getting in if you get there 30 minutes early or so.- 1367 replies

SumaiL's bio on the hype videos said United States, so United States it is as far as I'm concerned. There is definite excitement when a non-asian team gets up there in Dota, because of the dominance that they have shown in the sport so far, combined with the fact that their play style is noticeably different. Regardless, I'm still not a fan of the USA chants. The only thing that made it work for me was the equal number of chants for CDEC as well as the comments about the Wall of China from the commentators (which I suppose is nationalist in a different way, but at least positive.)

Hmm, I guess I got the original game for a steal at 20 pounds, so it's probably worth it to throw in another 40. The real question is, am I going to be still playing this in 4 years to make the lifetime expansion pass worth it. Edit: Oh, wait, that's before the 10 pound loyalty discount. OK, 30 pounds is definitely worth it.

You're probably going to be really angry. But if you'd just finished failing, it would give you an option to re-try. This mission and the final mission are repeatable, even on Ironman. -

My experience is that the technical aspects of the job can generally be trained, where a good attitude and good customer service are harder to find.

'The Swindle' from Size Five Games for PC and consoles
Dewar replied to Ben X's topic in Video Gaming
I saw on his twitter that he's given up on the final mission because even if you ghost the whole way to the Basilisk, all the alarms sound when you take it I guess? I don't know, my only experience with this game was the Unprofessional Friday show.- 103 replies

I got Race the Sun for "free" on PS+ and finally decided to try it out while watching Dota2 this weekend. The progression in the first mode is pretty awesome, and also obtainable, two things that often don't intersect for a lot of endless games out there. I capped out my level, but decided I was done and didn't want to do the two harder modes. Still well worth playing.
-
Nice, I'm looking forward to that.

At least the end of TI5 was a lot better than the end of TI4. Watching the stream, I was kinda into Deadmouse (or however you spell it) and it felt like a pretty nifty send-off. Last year they pretty much held up the Aegis cheered, and then said goodbye. I still think they have a lot of work to do though. I'd love something like the super bowl where they have an honest to god presentation ceremony, and then local news comes on for an hour and reviews the whole final or something. Dang it, I missed so much of the Newcomer stream. On the first day, it was advertised on Dota2.com/watch and I watched it, then it disappeared and I couldn't find it anywhere. I found out on Friday that they renamed the twitch channel dota2ti_newcomer instead of noob, but I wouldn't know that because, with all the options, going directly to Twitch is the place I least want to watch the stream. I'm so angry at the way they relegated the newcomer stream after it was such a pleasure last year. Now I've got to decide if I want to go back and watch the Newcomer finals stream, or if I've just had enough of Dota2 for another year.
-
Hmm, 40 pounds eh? I dunno...

No Newcomer's Stream today : ( I'm not exactly a newcomer, but I had a lot of fun listening to them last year. If nothing else, I'd learn about items and abilities I wasn't familiar with. Having only be one stream a day is bad enough, but now they didn't even have it today.
