Idle Thumbs 176: The Classic Alien Form
Dewar replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I was a mathematician in college, so I think in the form of equations. For the purposes of these comparisons: Violence (an action) /= sexism (an attitude) Violent attitudes = sexism (also an attitude) Violence (an action) = sexist actions (such as rape, spousal abuse, and tons of other nasty things.) Just because violence (the action) in video games /= violence in real life does not imply that violence in games /= violent attitudes in real life. Just because spousal abuse in video games /= spousal abuse in real life does not imply that spousal abuse /= sexist attitudes in real life. Similarly, violent attitudes in games (rare, since these attitudes are usually followed up with video game violence) may cause violent attitudes in real life (just listen to CoD voice chat some time.) and, sexist attitudes in games may cause sexist attitudes in real life. -
Hmm, I had heard differently, but I don't have any hard info so I'll bow to the experts.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

*shrug* I donated and was happy with what I got. Edit: Nevermind, I guess I put in money to the Podcast kickstarter that came by later. Edit2: Really, only the first two tiers were "silly" and chasing a duck is about equal to the usual $1 pledges (thank you on a webpage or "our eternal gratitude") https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pennyarcade/penny-arcade-sells-out -
They've also made a commitment to keeping people employed, rather than growing and then laying off when a project shifts, as well as providing actual benefits which many game companies do not.

Healthcare alone often runs up around 20k a person, plus 401(k) and other benefits beyond that. Edit: Upon reading Tim's post, it seems like hope got in the way of pragmatism. They kept on hoping that each update would bring in more folks, but I didn't see much marketing going on. They hoped right until the end, when they maybe could have communicated where things were sitting a little better and at least attempted to get the word out they were in trouble and see if the community could have brought more people in, or pledged more. To be fair, either of those attempts could have backfired and made things worse. I guess I'm spoiled by the documentary showing the trials that Broken Age has gone through. Edit2: That Zomboid post is poor. "I was miserable so they should have to be too" is not a good argument, as much as I'd like it to be when I complain about walking ten miles uphill both ways to school.

I generally play support, but I did enjoy having the compendium goal of a win with a certain hero because it pulled me out of my element a bit. I even jungled a couple of times! Seriously, they should have that daily quest thing just in the game, because once it went away I've played a lot less games.

I want an Oculus, and I want this, and I want to use them together.

Here I thought A.I. was just being obtuse in order to be frustrating. I know that after the first page I was ready to break.

Idle Thumbs 176: The Classic Alien Form

Saying the current Nerf line is Codbopsy (I love that word) and that makes it not appeal to girls is an interesting thought. I wonder how much of that war game appeal (and lack of appeal) is actually based on biology and how much is just part of society much the same way as pink versus blue. I guess where I'm at is if I'm a person who is already interested in shooting someone with a Nerf gun, I can't imagine caring if it's pink or yellow. As an aside, I really want one of those bows. That's cool that they actually thought of that. That sort of integrity thing what specifically interests me in Captain America. Maybe Superman isn't quite as boring as I thought. Edit: Interesting fact, if you go to the Nerf webpage, look at their catalog, and select All Nerf Products, it shows you everything except the Rebelle line. You have to specifically click on that header to see any of the bows. Edit 2: Now I'm just looking at real bows on Amazon. -
That's the reason that I quit Hearts of Iron 3. I would rather they leave it ahistoric rather than build a bunch of custom events that make it break in a certain way.

My expeirence living near Seattle and then eating other places on trips has shown me that there is a significant diference in the taste of seafood depending on where you live. Even flash-frozen, the quality degrades fairly quickly.

It blows my mind that we need to have a range of Nerf guns for girls. Isn't the standard Nerf color scheme broadly appealing? If not, can't we just have a bunch of different color schemes without comment? Also, what baby wears eye protection to play with Nerf guns? I wonder how many people he killed that were just sitting at work in their office building. If you're into X-Files sci-fi in the present day type stuff, you might look into Charles Stross's books. Why they aren't completely innocent of these trends, they also play with the convention in some interesting ways. To say more would be a spoiler. I guess I'm just a completionist, but I can't imagine working my way through a skip list. For me it would ruin the whole point of watching a series. I just recently (2 years ago or so) watched every single episode Farscape for the first time and loved it, so I guess maybe I'm just more tolerant of "lousy" TV. -
When it's a game I've really been looking forward to I often get stuck in this hole where I want to make sure I'll have plenty of time to savor it, which leads me to never actually starting it because I never feel like I have the time. That being said, last weekend we had a big multiplayer bash where I got to buy like 6 party games and play them with a full compliment of people. It flipped some sort of switch inside me because I'm actually looking forward to playing games again, instead of just kinda doing it because I have such a backlog and I should really play some of those games I paid for. To that end, I finished up King's Bounty and XCOM: Enemy Within, and now have started Shadowrun:Dragonfall - Director's Cut the first day it was available on Steam.

Nice, reminds me of when I wanted to remake my college dorm in CS. (Of course, that would have probably gotten me arrested.)

I'm curious, did you end up getting your credit?

I just saw the picture and assumed, I didn't even check out the byline. I just got lucky

It's wierd to read the last couple of posts in the thread from Febuary and see the exact same things mentioned there that have bothered me recently when trying to play it. It's nice to know I'm not completely crazy. That's an interesting article Bjorn, though I wish it had been a bit longer and more detailed. I was starting to feel where he was coming from and then it just ended *shrug*

True, but that's a little harder to accept when the company in question is large enough to have several irons in the fire and they have explicitly decided the one that you're interested in isn't their priority.

I plan on playing the Crossworlds version of Armored Princess (I got the platinum pack on Steam that came with both) at some point, but I'm not quite ready to jump in and blow that much time again.

I mean at least they didn't "silently" pull the plug. If it's doomed* at least they told us. *I haven't even played it in months, so I don't know if it's doomed or not.

Still none of the promised Sunless Sea talk It's OK, I'll just keep mentioning it every week. It was cool to hear Anita on the cast. I'm happy that everything started to flow a little better after the break because I also noticed some of the akwardness in the first half. The reason that it stood out to me is that she sounded specifically frustrated about being unable to get her opinion out there, where others (such as Danielle) seemed a little more carefree about the interruptions during the initial Thumbs adjustment period. I'm also on the do-not-edit side of the racist WB cartoon debate. In general I value seeing the original versions of things, regardless of the reasons for the edit, and I find it somewhat dishonest to try and cover those sorts of blemishes. -
A long ways back, but more just an interest in international politics that aren't solved with tanks.

Bloomberg just stated that first preliminary results will start coming out around 9pm Eastern (6.5 hours from now.) I'll be watching attentively while you sleep

Hmm, so is there anywhere I can watch live election results from Scotland? When do the polls close?
