Interactive Fiction/Text Adventures (and their engines)
Dewar replied to Ben X's topic in Video Gaming
Probably worth posting this as well, probably goes over the same games, but in more detail. http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/guest-column-ifcomp-2016-five-authors-and-six-game/1100-5504/- 61 replies

I just finished the campaign and found it very satisfying.

It's been a while since I played Dwarf Fortress, but most games I've played of this style avoid these issues by not having gay characters at all and/or not having a concept of rejection at all. I mean it was only the most recent Sims that allowed gay players right? I think the way I'd try and handle this is have each individual relationship as an entity tracked separately, and the status of each relationship go up and down based on rejections/acceptances. Of course, that's not very extensible. With 5 people, you'd have 10 relationships to track, with 20 people, you'd be up to 190. Having gender and orientation on a sliding scale instead of a binary also a big plus, but also harder to work with *shrug* Hopefully, given some time to think about it, Sylvester can be a bit more reasonable and make some changes to his system.

Vice.com/Gaming Becomes Waypoint, Employs Danielle Riendeau and Rob Zacny
Dewar replied to Dewar's topic in Idle Banter
Austin said a couple of times that they're archiving everything. I get the impression that Vice doesn't currently have a way to host long-form video like that, but I'm sure it'll be up somewhere. -

I wish they would have taken down the stream occasionally so Twitch divided it up into more edible chunks. I caught about a quarter of it live, and another quarter or so on replay, but I'll have to wait until videos get posted to see the rest. Edit: Dungeon World and Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective were both great. -
On her first day at Waypoint, Danielle was on their still-unnamed podcast. http://www.vice.com/read/we-talk-about-our-newest-hire-and-game-writing-challenges-on-waypoints-new-podcast

When I was younger, I put up with that pain for two weeks. When they finally dug in there, my intestine was wrapped around my appendix, which was the only thing that kept it from bursting. Yay! Pointless pieces of anatomy.

*shrug* I find I agree with him and Brad quite a bit, at least when it comes to action and strategy type games. I guess the fun of personality based video games journalism is finding the reviewers out there that like the same games you do.

Listening to Gerstmann talk about it on the Bombcast got me to spend $48 unwise dollars on ordering it from Amazon with the Prime discount. This month I've made a lot of bad purchasing decisions.

I'm really loving the Rockudrama bit. It's silly and stupid and exactly what I want out of a Rock Band game. What I wasn't expecting is how frustrated I'm getting playing the bass all the time. Losing that x6 multiplier is just the worst feeling, and there's my wife over there on expert getting gold stars. It never used to bother me, but it feels like there's more at stake this time? I can't tell if something is different from Rock Band 3 or if this is just another in a long line of needless, self-created frustration with video games.

I ordered a boxed copy from Amazon (which requires steam activation anyway, so it's probably just going to be a code in a box) since I could still get the 20% off deal from Amazon Prime.

*sigh* Health care costs are doubling here at work, siting the affordable care act. That may or may not be true, all I know is that every year I've worked at this job, I've been paid less.

I found the robots to be a refreshing change of pace, and was a little bit disappointed when the organics turn up. It felt more like a Gears 3 copy, which still makes it pretty good and fun, but not revolutionary.

I was just watching the Giant Bomb video for that today. I'm interested.

Box showed up in the mail yesterday, but I haven't opened it yet. Also have a pre-order on the ion drum adapter, I can't wait until that comes.

Just wanted to post another one of these "So Sad Today" columns, as the author seems to be posting exactly what's been going on in my head for the last 5 years. http://www.vice.com/read/i-found-my-inner-child-and-shes-a-disaster

Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)
Dewar replied to dartmonkey's topic in Video Gaming
Not having a touch screen would probably doom any hopes of WiiU backwards compatibility. It's such a big feature to me that none of the console companies seem to give a crap about. -
Sounds like any other case of being light-headed/fainting. I know when it's happened to me in the past I get a definite since that this isn't the real world.

Battery life, standby options, and screen quality are going to make or break this system for me. We'll see I guess. -
Regarding feeling guilt about not playing new games to talk about on the podcast: As someone who is much more interested in shorter experiences and needs some assurances that longer experiences are worth my time, I find the differences (or lack thereof) in your opinions on a game from week to week very valuable. I love hearing about Hitman, Rollercoaster Tycoon, or Deus Ex over multiple weeks. It tells me if a game has staying power. I also started my podcasting habit 10 years back listening to a weekly EVE show, so I'm always up for WoW updates, even if I had the opposite reaction than Spaff to going back to WoW. (I just kept thinking "Why am I not playing Guild Wars 2?")

I think that I (or maybe everyone) is unable to post in the Podcast threads anymore. Otherwise, looks great.

Vice.com/gaming article on that makes it sound very interesting. http://www.vice.com/read/find-greatness-in-garbage-with-diaries-of-a-spaceport-janitor

Have you had any tracking issues? The GB videos are full with instances where the player is standing still, but the controller or view are jumping around.

Sounds like the interface circuitry either on the USB interface or the drive itself could be bad. Most disk checks are still going to pass that, right up until the interface fails. If you can pop it open, you might be able to hook the drive directly to a PC and get stuff off that way.

On the plus side, DS2 has the easiest respecs, so you can feel a bit for free to experiment with your skills and you can always undo if you need to.
