When Jake started talking about the kids going by the toilet with the memorial on it, I heard "by" as "buy" and my brain immediately started imagining that Jurassic World would have a ton of super tacky tributes to Jurassic Park. Like there's a gift shop where you can buy a little figurine of the lawyer on the toilet, or there's a thing where you can have your photo taken with an animatronic version of Samuel L Jackson's severed arm. There have been a lot of fanmade Pokémon games, and they're all pretty over-ambitious and kind of crummy, in my opinion. I'm not familiar with those ones in particular, but they usually sacrifice some of the deeper mechanics and a lot of the games' charm in favour of just making the map bigger and adding more Pokémon. The last games to use sprites were the fifth gen games (Black/White and their sequels), incidentally. Maybe try those?

Reflecting on this, the hybrid dino means that, presumably, the Jurassic World staff felt that tourists were somehow not impressed enough by their theme park full of real fucking dinosaurs.

One thing I will give Jurassic World is that it seems like they got the sound spot-on. The ridiculous hoops that the sound engineers jumped through to produce the distinct, recognizable noises that the original JP dinosaurs had is exactly the kind of thing that fascinates me.

I'm honestly just disappointed that there are precocious little kids at all. The kids in the Jurassic Park movies are pretty much always terrible (you got cut from the team?). The fakiest part, for me, is the use of those big glowing blue holographic displays that every movie seems fond of using now. I feel like there was a memo about how people know what computers look like that went around Hollywood fifteen years ago and nobody read.

Oh, also, the only confirmed returning character is this guy: That seems like a situation where literally every single other actor turned them down.

Lost World has extremely high highs and low lows. 3 has a couple of okay bits that got cut from the first movie's script, but also has this: Jurassic World looks really dumb but I'm also kind of excited for it? Chris Pratt's lines are terrible and the idea of making a hybrid dinosaur for no reason is incredibly stupid, but they nailed a lot of the tone.

So there's a sort of short film festival thing going on in Japan right now called the Japan Anima(tor)’s Exhibition, and it's featured three shorts so far: Hill Climb Girl, about a girl who loves to race bicycles against a boy, featuring heavy use of CG. The Dragon Dentist, a sort of fantasy war short about a girl trying to become a "dragon dentist." ME!ME!ME!, a surreal, super-NSFW, nightmarish looping music video that serves as both a tribute to GAINAX and as a portrait of otaku culture's simultaneous obsession with and fear of sex. Make sure to set the site to English so you can turn on the subtitles. The short intro sequences are all fanmade.

This is why I have a PSP Go instead. People said I was crazy for preferring the all-digital platform. How times have changed.
