Idle Thumbs 208: Buds are Out, Keys are In
tegan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Doug is fascinating as the logical endpoint of the nineties-era Burger King Kids Club approach to diversity in cartoons, where every cast member is distinctly different and their ethnicities are never directly addressed, but the protagonist is still very unambiguously a caucasian male. I think that what I love about this podcast is perfectly encompassed by Danielle talking about shitty police procedurals as a segue and nobody considering that it would be a segue to HOT NEW RELEASE Battlefield Hardline. -
Didn't we try that once? Nobody watched the movie and we had like two pages of Gremlins 2 discussion instead.

Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."
tegan replied to Urthman's topic in Idle Banter
It's not that I have anything against Cortana, it's that I feel an OS should streamline itself to match its user instead of needlessly pestering them about its other features. Just tuck those features away somewhere if they're not being used. What I'm reminded of more than anything is something I remember reading about the development of Windows 8, when they were adding the Ribbon interface to Explorer. They had been taking notes about what features a sample of users were using and how frequently, making more commonly-used actions like Copy, Paste, etc into larger buttons on the UI. But they also said that they found certain functions that 0% of users used, and instead of removing the things that literally nobody used, they decided to just make their buttons smaller. -
Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."

So I'm reading about the new additions to Windows 10 that were unveiled yesterday, and... How about if I obviously don't need a service, you don't try to goad me into using it? Ugh. -
I have to have bloodwork done before an appointment next week, and I didn't notice I was supposed to do it a month beforehand. OnO

Obviously this is hyperbole, but Homestuck feels like the pyramid scheme of webcomics, where all these really talented amateur musicians/artists/programmers/etc. keep getting pulled into contributing to this one guy's master plan that will never ever pay off.
-
Fuck, Tom Siddell knows how to hit where it hurts. I haven't read Homestuck since college, where I finally got tired of Hussie's inability to complete a fucking story. Every single time it hit a cliffhanger that implied impending closure, it would just cut to a different location and introduce a whole new cast of characters. I just glanced at it, and it looks like he's still on Act 6? Something bonkers like Act 7 of Act 6 of Act 6?

Idle Thumbs 207: Buble Bloodborne Bloodbeef

Sadly, a nickname. This was so great until the last few seconds. SURPRISE! It was an ad for the worst music game. -
so I've been Wonder Trading some breeding leftovers these past tow nights and man has WT gotten weird. I got two legit-looking shiny legendaries (Giratina and Darkrai), a couple of people doing Wonderlockes (enjoy your near-perfect IV-bred Pokémon!), and some very obviously hacked Pokémon including a shiny Gogoat whose OT is a bot that does nothing but Wonder Trade.

Vinny and Alex of Giant Bomb did a Quick Look of it a while back if anyone wants a demonstration. It looks neat.

So in other superhero movie news, DC unveiled what Jared Leto will look like as The Joker for Suicide Squad and I guess his origin is that he falls into a vat of Marilyn Manson CDs in this one because jesus christ.

Jurassic Park is weird for me, because I consider it a great film despite knowing how severely flawed it is. There are needless changes from the source material (in the book, Dr. Grant loves kids, because all kids love dinosaurs), characters constantly acting like idiots (Timmy frantically hopping around while Lex is hacking and Dr. Satler, mere feet away from him, is desperately reaching for a gun that he could just hand to her), and tremendous logical inconsistencies (the T.Rex manages to sneak up on everyone in the finale despite being so heavy that its footsteps shake the ground). It's very campy, in a way, but for whatever reason I mentally categorize it as being much more legitimate than other films with similar camp value.

So who else has been playing BOXBOY!? Don't be deceived by its simple appearance: this is quickly becoming one of my favourite puzzle-platformers ever, and it's only five bucks. There's kind of a plot, even. I keep expecting everything to take some weird Fez turn.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

What if that weapon is the Master Sword/a Lightsaber/a Keyblade? Alternatively: what if you could pay $10 for clean women? -
David Mirkin! Yes! That guy does some terrible commentary.

For what it's worth, I intend to never play as anyone but Isabelle ever again. Also, the Animal Crossing track has you picking up bells instead of coins! Eeeeeeeeee!
-
This is live! Isabelle confirmed for best character. Dry Bowser confirmed for worst.

Guitar Hero Live 2 should have you play as Weird Al, since you can just slide Al right into a cover of any given song. -
I can't remember his name right now, but there's one guy on every one of those commentaries who talks like John Lasseter and explains every goddamn joke just in case you didn't get it.

So Giant Bomb did a video thing today where they started talking about the Star Wars Expanded Universe. My experience with the depths of ridiculousness in the SWEU was always stuff like the Hutt jedi. I was not aware of the horse that piloted an X-Wing, or Chewie being crushed to death by a moon, or the time Han Solo fought a giant ferret. I am okay with the new movies abandoning canon.
