  1. Idle Thumbs 134: Sports

My single favourite Iwata moment is during the Wii U unboxing when he couldn't figure out how the gamepad stand worked five minutes into this video.
  2. Super Mario 3D World

By the way, this game has the best Boo House theme of any Mario.
  3. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

So has anyone else heard about Penny Arcade's latest entry in their continued efforts to swallow their own collective foot? They placed a job posting on LinkedIn with some choice quotes like and and and OuO
  4. anime

I just rewatched Nausicaä for the first time in ages. I forgot how beautiful it is and how much it makes me cry my eyes out every damn time.
  5. Movie/TV recommendations

You are not, because it is excellent. It's from the creators of Clone High, after all.
  6. Ace Attorney is one of my favourite series ever, because it does so many wonderful things that video games almost never do. Games this past generation, I feel more than any previous generation, really started to explore the idea of social commentary and satire -which is a great thing- but also seemed to be limiting themselves to criticism or analysis of the medium of video games. Spec Ops, Braid, and Bioshock all come to mind. Ace Attorney predates all of those, and yet it has something frankly way more important to talk about (the Japanese legal system be fucked, yo) and does the lion's share of it expression through pure gameplay. I also feel like Ace Attorney teaching me how to manipulate conversations, remember small details, and find inconsistencies really helped me out more than a few times when I was working at an insurance company with a high amount of fraudulent claims coming in. I know it seems like a bit of a stretch in this case, but I love it when games teach actual practical skills or knowledge. ...but with that being said, the first three games were all originally made for the GBA and are more than a decade old, so I'm not sure if I think it's fair to consider them last-gen.
  7. Video game music renditions

    Marimbaaaaa!
  8. I Had A Random Thought...

Last night I realized that the Lego "Arctic" line is clearly based on The Thing, being about a bunch of be-parka'd arctic explorers finding alien life inside of frozen meteorites.
  9. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

Hey guys, remember that talent search that DC did? The one where their attempt at finding new and undiscovered artists backfired and ended up causing a huge scandal when they asked for submissions to include Harley Quinn naked and committing suicide? Well, the results are in, and they hired someone who had already worked for them! The whole thing was completely pointless! Yaaaaaaay!
  10. Is Posting Threads Busted?

It's already been firmly established that Nick Breckon is the white Eddie Murphy.
  11. Also, it's not like Persona 4 didn't have an amazing soundtrack that would be perfect for a rhythm game.
  12. I need a little help regarding my buttocks

Speaking from experience, an expensive chair is usually worth it, since they last forever and the inexpensive ones last maybe two years. (I'm sitting in a cheap chair that's probably gonna' fall apart sooner rather than later)
  13. Super Mario 3D World

Mario's F.L.U.D.D. move is conspicuously back in the new Super Smash Bros. after being absent in Brawl, so I've been kind of thinking that either Super Mario Sunshine is getting a 2014 remake like Wind Waker or, less likely, that Nintendo wants to revisit the F.L.U.D.D. concept at some point in the near future. EDIT: wait I guess it was in Brawl and I'm just an idiot. NEVER MIND.
  14. anime

English versions of anime that keep a perfectly translatable Japanese name are my most hated of all things.
  15. Lego is Still Cool

ROBOOOOT ROBOOOOOT ROBOOOOOOOOOT The last shot should give you some idea of how the elbow works. It's super sturdy since it's using four ball joints with restricted mobility (two to swivel the bicep area and two to hinge at the elbow) to support relatively little weight. It hinges really far, too. It has almost as much freedom as a real arm.If I can solve the shoulder weight problem it should be all good. the new hand doesn't have quite as much freedom as te onld one (partisularly the thumb, which is now a series of hinges instead of a ball joint), but it's significantly more compact now and I like how it tuned out.
  16. I Had A Random Thought...

three thumbs up (for Killzone 2)
  17. Is Posting Threads Busted?

You know, I didn't really want to say anything, but isn't Porpentine trans? Saying "she looks like a dude," even phrased as "she looks like this specific dude," is the sort of dark grey area that I usually make a point of deliberately avoiding.
  18. Non-video games

Did you find the video where he's pitching it to some kind of Dragon's Den type show? It's the saddest, most cringe-inducing thing.
  19. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

The 3DS is just about the best console you can get at the moment. I can't recommend it enough. Even if you're only interested in three games right now, I guarantee that number's just going to multiply. Also, a little bit sad that I went with Mario rather than Zelda seeing all the fun you guys are having. I shall endure.
  20. Super Mario 3D World

So I guess everyone else picked up Zelda on Friday, huh? For what it's worth, this might be my favourite Mario game now. It keeps throwing crazy curveballs at me. I just did a stage where I got to explore an open area until I found five token thingies that would lead me to the second half, which the game previously hadn't done yet. While I was there I got to try out the boomerang suit for what I think was the first time, I found a Goomba disguise for the first time, spent a loooot of time climbing inside of Koopa Shells and throwing myself around the stage (best) and then capping it all off with a ride on a dinosaur set to the Mario 64 slide music. Such an incredible, crazy game. I'm taking the time to 100% each stage before moving on, too, which isn't really something I'd normally do. Although the game's not a walk in the park, the only really frustrating stage so far was one that made me use cherry clones in tricky platforming, with the idea being that you can't get some goodies without a requisite number of clones surviving, which is a bit of a cheap trick. Also, I found the golden train from that trailer, accidentally threw myself under it and died, and then it just disappeared. Is it gone forever or what?
  21. Lego is Still Cool

So the robot's coming along nicely (I'll take pictures in the morning when I have better light), but I'm becoming concerned about the weight. I'm thinking of adding a simple pneumatic piston setup to the shoulders so that the entire weight load's not resting on a single high-friction ball and socket joint, plus I feel that I ought to get a whole buttload of high-friction socket extenders for the ankles and hips. Worried that might add too much bulk tothe hips, but it's better than having the whole thing collapse under its own weight. I did revamp and shrink down the hand, though, and completed the skeleton and some dummy plating for the forearm. Right now I'm at the upper limits of what I can do without putting in a Bricklink order, but I guess I can still do the head/cockpit. Wheeee.
  22. Essential PS3 exclusives

...Persona 5. To second a few recommendations, Wipeout HD + Fury might have been my most-played console game of the past gen, even just for Eliminator Mode, and Journey might have been my most beloved game of the generation.
