  1. Not-Game Doodles

A friend pitched an idea for a kids math game based around making ice cream sundaes so I started noodling around over the weekend http://www.maximum-extreme.com/we-all-scream Buttons: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 This is definitely still doodle-status, there's not really much to it yet; just me having fun on Saturday morning. I think the idea will be that you'll get a couple instructions and a price point, and get a score based on how close to that you get.
  2. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Oh huh, didn't realized there was a new Sleep album coming! I looked into it and there's a single here http://www.adultswim.com/music/singles-2014/ along with a Mastodon song I haven't heard anywhere. I think Sleep actually played The Clarity when I saw them a couple weeks ago; if you get the chance to catch them on this tour, I highly recommend it. Al Cisneros and Matt Pike both have very...fitting stage presence. By which I mean Cisneros makes for a convincing stoned druid and I'm fairly certain that Pike is some kind of demon.
  3. Plain Sight is really neat, I'll be at work when this starts but hopefully I'll be able to get on towards the end!
  4. Game Jams

The name Shrimp Slam really tickles me, and I think this is a fun little game that fits the theme of the jam really well. My main criticism is that you need to find some better fonts.
  5. Destiny (MP)

I joined the group, playing on PSN as Dinosnorez. If you see me online feel free to hop in
  6. Unity Questions Thread

This is also how Win8/phone is done, you export a .sln from Unity, open it in Visual Studio, and compile it on a Windows 8 PC. I haven't actually submitted a game so I don't know how it goes from there but that part was...mostly straight forward.
  7. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

This isn't really a music recommendation, but it's a music related thing I recommend? http://everynoise.com/engenremap.html Kinda similar to Ishkurs Guide to Electronic Music or Map of Metal but not genre specific. A MASSIVE graph of music genres, mostly computer generated, though I do see the developer tweet about adding genres so I'm not sure. If you click into a genre, you'll see another graph showing artists in that genre, and you can play some selected tunes. Poking around weird music genres is a fun way to lose a bunch of time, check it out!
  8. Amateur Game Making Night

Allright, here's my Ludum Dare game: http://dinosaursssssss.itch.io/anti-matter edit: heres a version that im updating and bug fixing : http://maximum-extreme.com/antimatter/ It's a...I donno, tower defense tug-of-war I guess. I wanted the player to lose most of their planets, and have to win them all back. I'm mostly happy with how it came out, though it definitely needs some rebalancing. I had a good time making the music, even though it isn't that great I don't think...Bosca Ceoil is a really nifty little tool. I got the hang of using it, but I still don't really know how to make a fun tune. It also felt good to make my own models rather than mashing together primitives in unity or getting stuff off the asset store; my needs for this weren't that crazy, but I feel like I scoped well and I'm happy with the results. This is something I'd like to keep poking at, so if anyone has feedback I'd love to hear it. And heres a picture! edit: I made some gifs (including a sorta-timelapse of development) and included more screenshots in this imgur gallery. http://imgur.com/a/vtyi0#0
  9. Game Music!

I finally messed around with this for a little while last night and I think it will be an invaluable tool for me in the future. It is almost exactly what I've been looking for, and I found it to be very intuitive. I think the song I made is probably awful, but it was easy to make and it feels like the tool is flexible enough for me to learn and make good stuff down the road. If I have time for music during ludum dare this weekend, this is for sure what I'll be using to make it. Thanks!
  10. Game Jams

Ludum Dare 30 is this weekend, from Friday to Sunday. I haven't done an LD before, but I've been meaning to join and I've been slacking on making some games recently so I'm gonna do this one! I'll probably be working in Unity, and maybe now that I have a basic understanding of modelling I'll make something in 3d this time? My guess is that if I go down that road I'll spend all 48 hours making some abysmal models but we'll see how inspiration strikes when the theme is finalized. http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/
  11. Amateur Game Making Night

This is looking really nice, now I feel kinda bad for having suggested such a hacky solution when you were talking about this in IRC.
  12. If anyone wasn't familiar with 'greebling', a friend of mine recently did a short interview on NPR about it and 'grok' as part of series they've been doing on industry-specific lingo. http://www.npr.org/2014/07/08/329884096/grokking-and-greebling-in-the-strange-land-of-gamer-lingo
  13. Amateur Game Making Night

Neat! I like what you have so far, animations and camera effects are really effective. If you're looking for more inspiration and haven't seen it, check out . I believe the demo project he builds is also gamemaker, though I don't know if he posted the source anywhere
  14. Not-Game Doodles

Neat! Are the white waves just moving from back to front when the volumes hits a threshold, or is there something more complicated going on there? Just curious 'cause this is really cool.

Cleaning out folders and I found this old TF2 screen. I'm the soldier on the left and died shortly after.
  16. Actual reading about games thread

This hasn't been posted in for a while but the op seems like a good resource so I'm gonna sorta-necro (4 months isn't THAT old, right) this thread to give props to two pieces I like a lot. Embed With...Brendon Chung - Cara Ellison Between the Embed With series and the S.EXE columns she wrote for RPS Cara is pretty rapidly becoming one of my favorite games writers. I particularly love this piece because rather than focusing very directly on what Brendon is working on, she talks a lot about Glitch City (the indie dev collective where Brendon works) and the people that work there. It feels very personal, and gives some insight into his process that you don't get from most interviews. Obviously Cara also talks a bit about Quadrilateral Cowboy as well, but it feels secondary to situating the reader in his work space and its tone. This piece made me desperately want to go spend some time working at Glitch City LA. Dear Space Marine - JP Grant Aurelius Ventro This column isn't directly about video games, but I'm also gonna use it to say that if you like Idle Thumbs you would probably really enjoy the Unwinnable Weekly. I think the Thumbs suggested backing the kickstarter on one of the casts but might be wrong. If you enjoy the sort of critical analysis that you hear on Idle Thumbs, you will probably enjoy Unwinnable. A favorite of mine (that's only available if you pay for the issue or subscribe) was written by Jill Scharr and made a strong argument that there is in fact a ghost in Gone Home. Anyway, Dear Space Marine is an advice column written by a Warhammer 40k Space Marine, a concept that is absolutely delightful to me. This piece is written in-character, has some great tonally appropriate jokes, and (I think) is still accessible to a non-fan. You can also directly ask Aurelius for advice on twitter here https://twitter.com/DearSpaceMarine
  17. The Gamasutra industry salary survey results are now out : http://www.gamasutra.com/salarysurvey2014.pdf The results are sort of interesting (I didn't realize audio work paid so well!) but they also only had a total sample size of ~2000 ("The total sample reflected in the data presented for U.S. is 1,246; for canada 292; and for Europe 573.") so I would suggest taking all these numbers with a large grain of salt. That said, I donno where you'd get better data. A few tidbits I found interesting: "The most popular ways to find a job in 2013 were via referral (28 percent), job postings (18 percent), being recruited directly by the company (12 percent), and sending in a resume (12 percent)." The highest average salary for programmers by education level was those who listed 'Some College.' The average for those with a doctorate with 102k, 'Some College' was 103. Average salary for men was higher than women in every department except QA, where women earned an average of $0.04 more. "Solo indie developers earned an average income of $11,812 in 2013, down 49 percent from 2012’s $23,130 average [...] Fifty-seven percent of indie game developers (including both solo indies and members of indie teams) made under $500 in game sales."

Here's an old Saints Row 4 gif I made, and an accidentally crazy spinning rocket from Kerbal Space Program.
  19. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

It's been a while since I listened to the first one, but Mouth Silence strikes me as kinda bizarre in comparison. There's a lot of fun dance-y referential stuff there too, it, but I thought the Loveshack mixes and a few other spots were sorta unsettling. I don't think it's bad, just a different vibe. All that said, Mouth Silence is still great, and in particular I love Crocodile Chop (which ).
  20. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I only discovered this yesterday, so I apologize if it's actually widely known... Here is a 15 minute funk/disco medley of tunes from Star Wars. Highlights for me are Princess Leia's theme played on what sounds like a theremin, and an extended xylophone solo in the Cantina Band song.
  21. Unity Questions Thread

I actually didn't know what that was called until I looked it up today. The title of that article is hilarious though, "Anti Ghosting Explained" sounds like the subtitle of Ghostbusting for Dummies.
  22. Unity Questions Thread

I don't know if this is your problem, but I've had some keyboard hardware issues with this in the past. Some keyboards are designed to handle a maximum number of keypresses at once, and some I think can only handle a certain number of keypresses from specific regions of the keyboard? No idea if Unity has any limitations that might also be causing issues, but I know it can be a physical keyboard construction problem too. This post kinda explains some of it: http://www.microsoft.com/appliedsciences/antighostingexplained.mspx
  23. Amateur Game Making Night

    hahahahaha
  24. Unity Questions Thread

That actually is very helpful, thanks! Also just good to know that I'm not alone in finding this bizarrely difficult. It felt like I was missing some really obvious source of documentation, but nope, it just doesn't exist.
  25. Amateur Game Making Night

Not quite sure where this is going. It's kinda neat though. I think the performance will be pretty bad with more text, currently every text mesh in the scene gets split into an individual mesh for every letter at start, and all of them are checking their distance from the player every update. I probably need to dynamically switch the individual letter and full sentence meshes out or something.
