  1. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Android is offered totally free without any official association with google through the "open handset alliance" as AOSP (Android open source project). You can easily pull an amazon and basically fork the entire thing into your own ecosystem without any google involvement. The only "google" bits of android are the play store and play services. I have always figured that if Nintendo did base their next console on android it would be some "nintendroid" version of the OS and not something we would easily recognize as android.
  2. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

If they're really unifying all hardware function around this device I think it's time they pull the trigger and just call this thing the "Nintendo Entertainment System"! I believe most of the "super hardware" speculation is centered around the fact that the consoles speculative release window aligns closely with the release date of Nvidias "Pascal" hardware architecture (http://www.anandtech.com/show/7900/nvidia-updates-gpu-roadmap-unveils-pascal-architecture-for-2016) which is rumored to be a monster jump in rendering performance. If they plan on building the system based on android (which IMO makes all the sense in the world) going with tegra seems like a no brainier. Mobile hardware tech has already solved the encode and stream problem better then the WiiU. It would be technically intelligent of them to lean on that already superior implementation to kind of just take their current vision to the next level. I just don't really know what that would look like... I guess what I am imagining is a TV box running some kind of x86/Nvidia Maxwell/Kepler hardware to play "console games". And then the controller some kind of 5-7 inch device with some physical inputs powered by some manner of tegra that can remote play from the "console" on local networks and then play some other tier of game when you're away from home (like normal android games or bespoke DX handheld games). I don't imagine there will be a scenario where you'll be able to run "the same" games on both the handheld component and the TV powered component. Unless the hardware in the handset is the "baseline" and the box under your TV is simply a stream point. However that seems generally less exciting to me. Then there's the question of how you price and package something like that? Is it one thing (a controller and a console)? If there's any kind of significant compute power that's going to be real expensive. Is it 2 things that are part of the same "system" (the console with big rendering power and the handheld as it's controller/companion). That allows stuff to be priced more reasonably but also kind of breaks the idea of the 2 pieces creating some whole experience.
  3. Winter Wizard Jolly Jam interest thread

I figured we would make a thread and a public slack room for the game in general and then teams could move into private rooms should they desire. That way there's both a 'sign post' type area to look for teams and a chat room type place where people could look for partners. If someone wants to make a spreadsheet or something that would be amazing but someone would have to actually want to manage that.
  4. Winter Wizard Jolly Jam interest thread

I'd be more then happy to put up a series of videos where I take a look at all of the games that come out of the jam too. I think that if we put a thread up 2-3 weeks before the jam that should give people enough time to form teams naturally? I wasn't around for the first jam so I'm not really sure what kind of issues forming teams presented? I installed the hangouts plugin in slack and it has the ability to make private channels and etc. Hopefully that can help fellow jammers organize.
  5. Idle Thumbs Readers Slack & Discord

I believe slack came first. A lot of their popularity at the moment is derived from the fact that most offices are switching their office messaging to slack and away from stuff like hip chat and jabber. Makes it convenient to just "add another channel" for any number of things. That's actually why I ended up starting this. I end up just having slack open all the time anyways.
  6. So the creator of The Stanley Parable has a new game out

I don't think this would draw positive opinions from many critics that are outside the game space. I feel there's a certain amount of pre-information required to get the most out of this. IMO The more "into video games" you are the more primed you are to immediately access "the good stuff" in this game. I don't find the story it wears on it's sleeve to be particularly interesting and that's the thing most people are going to readily engage with.
  7. So the creator of The Stanley Parable has a new game out

Probably pretty disrespectful stuff. He pretty famously thought video games could never be art. Not only that but I think this game plays almost totally disproportionately to "game dev type people". I generally loved it, I also make games for a living. My writer friend totally hated it. I would imagine Ebert would share most of the same criticisms he had about The Beginners guide. I myself have to admit that the emotional and inter personal relationship angle of the game was a complete miss for me. I didn't personally feel or relate to any emotional connection between characters in the game itself. I was actually nonplussed by the games ultimate path of resolution but still look back on the entire experience positively primarily for the form it's using to deliver it's narrative.
  8. So the creator of The Stanley Parable has a new game out

So I played it last night and after waking up this morning I had this thought?
  9. I'm here to request a link to a video of this robot that consumes trees.
  10. Idle Thumbs Readers Slack & Discord

So turns out there's a little nodejs app that will automate the process for us. You can go ahead and sign up yourself with the link in the first post if I haven't invited you already!
  11. Idle Thumbs Readers Slack & Discord

How do I go about doing that? Just wildcard (*) in the "allow signups from domain" option in the management panel. I dug through the settings last night and couldn't seem to find an option for "open enrollment". I sent out more invites. I'll update the initial post once I figure out how to properly open this up.
  12. Idle Thumbs Readers Slack & Discord

First round of invites are sent!
  13. Idle Thumbs Readers Slack & Discord

Well i'm about to head off to bed but if people want to start PMing me email addresses I'll go ahead and send out invites.
  14. DOTA 2

People are still talking about this? There should be a map condition preset for the gg. So if everyone on a team GGs (or clicks the surrender button) and the map condition is set (for an extreme example lets say your ancient is exposed or maybe you've lost all your barracks or something. At that point the ancient should explode. I've played games that are clearly won in under 25-30 mins where the other team would just fountain farm basically forever. Most of the times we have ended games like that by organizing a group quit. I think it's probably good to give players the option to call a match a wash. They do it in competition I just think they would need to conditionalize it heavily if they wanted to introduce it into the mainline game.
  15. I've actually had that particular issue a few times now. In an era of subscription services I bet that's a really common issue for "custom soundtrack games". I know spotify offers and API and I believe that rdio does as well. I wonder why we haven't seen a smaller music game (not playign directly with labels) try and go that route. There where poeple at indiecade this year playing it on dance pads at night games. That was pretty awesome!
  16. JazzPunk - A Retro Spyberpunk Comedy Adventure

I don't remember the middle of that game at all. I played it in one sitting with a friend of mine pretty soon after it came out. Like most people I think the humor was kind of hit or miss. The entire world feels like an episode of Tom Goes to the Mayor or something. It's entertaining but after about 10 minutes the ad hoc nonsense going on doesn't seem quite so ludic and just generally loses a lot of it's effect.
  17. Torchlight II

Are there actually people playing this now? I would be rather interested in getting back to it. This game came out pretty close on the heels of Diablo 3 (which I played quite a bit of) and I never got to into it. When are people generally playing / do we need to be friendson some kind of ruinic service or etc?
  18. Unity: Questions

Gravity does not apply to axis. The joy axis will recenter when the stick recenters. I believe sensitivity only works on buttons and mouse inputs. You're best to just grab the joy axis and then programatically scale it.
  19. Unity Tutorials

What issues do you guys have with video tutorials. I sometimes prefer text as it's easier to follow at your own speed but with the way the editor is I find watching the videos very helpful even if they tend to move a little quicker then I would generally like them to.
  20. Game Jams

I feel like work was the obvious choice!
  21. Loadout: Am I the only one seeing this? [NSFW]

I don't think I'm trying to blanket label anything. I'm merely saying that in my estimation accusations of racism indicate an accusation of hate deep in someones heart, in this case the artist in question. For people kicking around on the internet I see that accusation thrown around a lot. I'll just shut up now I guess.
  22. Loadout: Am I the only one seeing this? [NSFW]

Stop being so eloquent with my point. It's my point!!!! I plan to spend at least another 2000 words trying to nonsensically defend it.
