  1. The Huge Armored Core Playthrough

I know that for me the graphics/look of Dark Souls is what made me sit up and take notice, more than the buzz or the alleged difficulty. In the era of WoW neon colours the understated realistic look was such a relief for me, fantastical elements notwithstanding. Technology finally caught up with their design ideas in other words. Anyway, thanks for the thread, it's a fascinating read.
  2. Dead Cells

I totally agree that the flat damage upgrades in the meta-game are dull as heck. It would be way cooler if they indeed add more affixes like the higher-rank items you find in the wild have. I really like Risk of Rain but Dead Cell's controls and precision and lack of HP sponges make it work way better for me. That said, I'm in a similar boat as SAM (though I've never even seen the Watcher) in that the game is getting harder, and I'm probably going to take a little break. Doesn't help that I hate the new area, time pressure and zippy enemies are not my thing.
  3. Is It Wrong To Eat Meat?

Living in the Netherlands makes it easy to buy cheep and awesome cheese. So that's what I use. There's quite a few soy-based sausage analogues in the stores but I haven't really tried them to be honest.
  4. I haven't watched the film but it sounds like a slightly better version of Ready Player One then.
  5. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I would totally play killing floor with you, it's one of my favourite zombie shooters.
  6. Episode 332: Chaos Reborn

Can't think of a nobler purpose. Steam or GOG?
  7. Episode 332: Chaos Reborn

If anyone wants a copy of the game, I got a spare one for free off backing Phoenix Point; Steam or GOG.
  8. Outside is my favourite Bowie album by quite some distance. I think it's because I became music-aware partially on its strength.
  9. I just shared a 'racing' story in another thread haha, this episode made me regret not saving it.
  10. Plug your shit

It's super cute but also is kind of like a double-ended dong also? The screenshots are reminding me somewhat about that Genital Jousting game.
  11. Dead Cells

I had a trifecta of assassin dagger (with bonus damage to frozen), freeze grenade and phase going, and it just felt unfair. Like chaining 3k crits on a frozen group.
  12. I pulled out of a slip and spin on an unpaved road driving in Canada purely on instinct because I'd been playing so much Colin McRae 2 on my force feedback wheel. Turns out that force feedback was pretty accurate! Only afterwards did I have to immediately pull over once I realised what had almost happened & it hit me. Of course I may have been going a bit faster because of playing racing games so much as well. But it turned out well, luckily.
  13. Julian Barnes

I found Levels of Life to be very good. One of the most accurate accounts of what love and loss feels like, to me.
  14. Dead Cells

The more I play this game, the more I love it. I'm also super happy to switch to a new combo whenever one pops up, I'm more of a variety player than an optimiser I guess. I don't think any game has let me feel flow as well as this one since... probably either a Souls game or maybe my days when I was good at TF2 spy.
  15. Non-video games

Potion Explosion is a gigantic hit in our household. Both my daughters also love it (4 and 6) - the younger at a more physical level, the older also trying to think ahead about chain reactions. The only knock I'd give the game is that it encourages very long turns because there's so many options once you have a few potions done that you want to think everything through. But that's also just the kind of players we are and know so maybe more of an indictment of our playgroup.
  16. Non-video games

Haven't had time to play it yet but it looks great.
  17. Dead Cells

This is exactly me, and I bought and love this game. Good overview vid, looks like you've gotten a bunch further than I did. So far the environments haven't started to bore/grate on me at all, I love the character they added with all the little graphical touches like the fluttering banners on the ramparts/promenade path etc.
  18. A steaming relationship: where you work for free

Oh yeah, I checked release history, auto-updating wasn't in the first release but it got added in fairly soon.
  19. A steaming relationship: where you work for free

How do you mean? As far as I could tell it's been updating my games just fine. But maybe I've been sort of imagining it, I haven't paid close attention.
  20. Life

Congratulations on increasing your engagement level!
  21. Endorsements from Thumbs Readers

I've never made anything dough-related that I wasn't happier kneading by hand, but then I love dough. Those are some doughpe-lookin' pretzels indeed.
  22. Endorsements from Thumbs Readers

I'm going to go ahead and make the prediction it's also quite a lot more nutritious than most store-bought bread so hey, bonus! I'm so happy to hear it's working out for you. Our last batch of starter went bad and started to smell of feet, so it's been a nice opportunity to make some fresh and try different flours. My spelt starter & flour bread especially has come out well. The flour came from a local mill which adds a certain extra something in my mind.
  23. To be honest, I think it's harder to make an interactive system that won't have people generating stories out of it. It's kind of one of the defining characteristics of humans that we impute meaning and narrative to everything we see. Having a complex interactive system that generates the stories that you as a designer wish it to engender in your subjects/consumers, now that's hard indeed.
  24. Depending on your definition of gameplay and story, you could argue that the Game of Life comes pretty close to the theoretical minimum (and I've definitely played and had fun with it) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life e: @Jutranjo's already linked to a more general thing, haha, nvm.
  25. Julian Barnes

Don't forget to listen to the idle book club episode when you're done as well
