Leaving aside the issue that I take with holding up a site that emboldened a borderline hate movement as ethical (obviously GGers wouldn't see that one the same way I do), I've also heard rumors that Escapist is pretty bad about actually paying contributors a lot of the time. I suppose GG wouldn't see anything wrong with that either, though, since they don't seem to think writing is a job people should get paid for. I know that you weren't saying this was a view you personally hold, but I thought that was a point worth addressing.

Yeah, and some of those have pretty distinctive styles... Homer as Zoro doesn't even have the chest scar, and the others don't seem very on-model either. It's not very good pandering, is it?

I'm not familiar with hate speech, but my understanding was that incitement was the relevant difference. You can say "I hate ethnicities" all you want, though people will think you're a shitbag: But the second you say "let's go beat up some ethnicities" you're inciting and breaking the law. However, the basis for this understanding is basically just "vague comprehension", so I may be way off base. -
I was more addressing that to Twig. The self is generally an illusion IMO. The entire idea is just a side effect of how our brains work.

I'm super uncomfortable with the idea of classifying any kind of speech that isn't a direct threat to safety and well-being as 'the bad kind of free speech' and banning it. We've seen how easily white supremacists can twist the rhetoric of progressive language into "maybe you're the real racist" sophistry: The last thing we need is to give them a chance to legally suppress equal rights movements on the basis of 'hate speech'. Free speech isn't easy or harmless, it's just more important than it is difficult and harmful. I wholly repudiate the idea that we should consider restricting it the moment it might do harm. -

Basically it's a reactionary movement about keeping progressive thought out of games writing and by extension out of games -- this has been the only consistent theme behind GG rhetoric and activism as far as I have seen. Ethical conflict is used as a smokescreen to justify that, but it's an extremely flimsy pretext when examined closely. Zoe was the catalyst because she's a woman who makes socially-conscious art games.

I wish they'd just suck up the hero fantasy and actually make a game about playing Watson. Why not? Watson's cool! Make a game where there's too much shit for Sherlock to handle, so he asks you to go collect evidence for him. This is something that actually happened several times in the books. Bah. No one gives Watson enough credit.
