  5. My first experience with modding -- actually, maybe my only experience with modding, since that's never really been a scene I got into -- was with the original Diablo. I used a trainer program solely to back up my characters in case I got my corpse stuck in too nasty a situation to retrieve my items, and eventually started poking around in the character save files it generated to see what I could do. I figured out what each of the byte values represented, and started loading my character out with items that used graphics that were cut from the game but left in the files. I played around with creating new weapons this way, such as a two-handed shield that did bonus damage, but unfortunately the stats of unique items were baked into the game code so I couldn't generate new uniques without them reverting to the originals when the character was next loaded. I tried to edit the game files themselves to create one of my custom uniques, but couldn't get it to work. It was a pretty fun and interesting experiment while it lasted though, and looking back on it now I think I learned a lot about what goes into making a game from playing with those files.
  6. Hyper Light Drifter

Oh wow I forgot they changed that too (haven't played since release). Yeah not sure if I'm on board with that change either, but hey it's not my game.
  7. Hyper Light Drifter

Yeah, it was a big adjustment for me first playing that the dash let you go through enemies but didn't give you any invulnerability -- they ended up changing one of those, and not the one I personally would have chosen, but probably better than the way it was on release overall. I definitely consider that criticism of DS2 pretty bs, at least when framed that way; 'artificial' difficulty in that case being defined merely as 'difficulty that I don't like'. Learning how to deal with more than one opponent is a vital part of the challenge of those games, and is a big part of DS1 even as early as Undead Burg. But, yeah, to keep from talking too much about Souls in the thread for a different game, the combat is definitely a lot more reactive rather than strategic in HLD, pushing you to position yourself optimally on the fly rather than try to frame each encounter so you can handle it optimally from the get-go.
  8. Hyper Light Drifter

A mass of enemies is pretty possible to deal with in Souls as long as you don't get blocked into a corner. If you have an escape route, it's usually possibly to back up and funnel them through an entrance. The only real way they're different in how situations like that play out is that it is possible to get body blocked in Souls, which is a rough situation to deal with -- you learn to be very conscientious about not letting those situations happen. The closest equivalent in HLD would I think be getting stunlocked, which is rarer but also more difficult to avoid.
  9. Hyper Light Drifter

I think North is best, the west boss is pretty nasty and the standard east enemies likewise
  10. The Next President

If, in your best judgment, casting a vote for a third party is the best way to affect long-term change, then that is 100% fine (imo). I just want to see people actually considering the pragmatic results of their efforts rather than just voting to spite a candidate who is otherwise their best bet in an extremely worrying election.
  11. The Next President

I just wanted to frame it that way since it conveys the idea of a two-point swing more effectively. Put whichever candidate you prefer on either side of that.
  12. The Next President

Out of curiousity, is there any actual dispute here that either Trump or Hillary is going to win the presidential election? Assuming not, isn't each vote effectively +1, -1, or 0? I mean I get that there's a bit more significance to a vote as sending a signal, but, like... pragmatically, aren't these the actual realistic potential outcomes of the election? So... what? Why is this an infuriating stance? No one needs to support her beyond this one thing, but if this is effectively a two person race, I at least feel pretty confident about which president I would rather have. Your vote is, as always, yours to spend, but it's a vote not a wish.
  13. The Next President

Regardless of whose fault it is, the world ends up paying the price
  14. Idle Thumbs Streams

Just caught the VoD of the Hitman stream. Good disabusing, Chris.
  15. Idle Thumbs Streams

He didn't want to send anyone outside to get the supplies to build more heaters because he was worried they'd freeze
  16. Making Music. Tunes by Idle Thumbsters

I did a new music. They Only Remember Silhouettes
  17. The Next President

Honestly I think his campaign has backslid massively from the primaries and really don't see it happening now, but it is a super disturbing thought and I'm not going to relax until this whole thing is over.
  18. I like to call the thing people are talking about, where the most successful strategy is the least fun one, 'tyranny of optimal play'. I wrote about it a while back.
  19. SGDQ 2016

Yeah that was what I meant with my post. In fact, I don't even remember using a no-clip cheat, I'd just fudge my way through the geometry by climbing on an object and pushing through the ceiling, and just stand on top and look down on the tangle of checkerboard beige spaghetti. PC gaming was very different back then.
  20. SGDQ 2016

I tuned in near the end of the Daggerfall run, saw someone floating out of bounds above a dungeon, and was like "yeah that seems about right"
  21. Yeah, but I guess I find a narrative about the corrupting influence of power a bit less impactful than one about the inevitable demise of all things. It is, as I said, a much more human principle; it is only human to be corrupted by power, but all things, human or not, will eventually come to an end.
  22. Beat the game a few weeks ago, spent some words pondering how it felt different to me than the previous games in the series
  23. Idle Streaming Community: Twitchy, Tasty

Well, streaming every day was too stressful, so I figured three days a week was good to aim for. I've generally noticed more people randomly dropping in for nighttime streams, though it's hard to draw any broad conclusions since it's mostly just one or two people at a time, and I generally find it easier to do things late in the day so I have plenty of time to wake up and get other things done beforehand. Mostly it's just one I think I'll be able to maintain for a while -- schedules are hard to maintain for me, but I can usually manage to pull my shit together by 9pm
  24. Idle Streaming Community: Twitchy, Tasty

So I'm starting to develop a schedule I can actually kinda stick to for a while hopefully: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, 9-11pm PST. Currently doing a Soul Level 1 run of Dark Souls, may continue that into SL1 runs of DS2 and DS3 or do something else afterwards, haven't decided. Also open to suggestions if anyone has anything they'd like to see.
